cabaret build.
« on: April 25, 2016, 11:04:00 am »
I'm building one of these cabs based off Luis Tully's plans:

and using jaharr01's build thread as a guide.
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,142577.msg1477025.html#msg1477025

i'm thinking of making it it a little bigger to accommodate a 2 player control panel so I can play most of the two player horizontal hack n' slash / run n' gun types like golden axe & metal slug.
I could do a neo geo layout and get a few fighters but then my boys will end up fighting for real if they play those against each other.  ::) so unless someone can point out a great 4 button game i'd miss out on i'll probably just stick with 3.

maybe even go with the golden axe button layout?

I have options for displays i'm trying to figure out also.
20" CRT TV with component in.
17" VGA monitor
17 & 19" LCD monitors.

I've never worked with MDF.
I know it's heavy as hell since I had HD cut a sheet into 2x4 ft pieces and carried them in but I don't know if I can hang a 20" CRT off it at that angle.
Not even sure a CRT at that angle would fit without sticking out the back.

I'd extend the sides to be 24" deep and widen it to 24" to fit a 2 player control panel so it would essentially be a square.
Not sure how that would look.

Any suggestions for a newb?

I'd do a mockup to see if two players on this style cab is feasible. To my knowledge, all caberets are 1 player. The angle and depth of the monitor on that style cab in particular is really meant for one player standing in front of the machine.

IF the CRT does stick out you could always adjust the back panel of the cabaret to accommodate it - ie. like they did in the Pacman cabaret shown in this sketchup model

Another idea - If you have a couple monitors -- and a bit of extra $ for the build why not build 2 normal width and place side by side and connect them for 2 player play or have them work as 2 separate machines if playing single player.

I do have some giant boxes I can do that with.
I also may, based on this consider a narrower vertical schump with the 17" crt monitor and just go with the one player CP.
Which I will probably mock up also since that sounds like a good idea to do.

When I built my first DK Cabaret I was kind of surprised at the lack of monitor space. I ended up going with a (I think) a 17 inch lcd. This is a pretty neat Idea. Can't wait to see what comes of it.

Ordered a slot cutter for t-moulding.
bought a 1/2" shank when the fixed router in my table takes 1/4".

Eh, I wanted plunge router anyway. :)

Nice day out to cut some MDF.
Go find my saw and.....

I have no idea. Maybe the dog? Lol.

Got it cut out & decided to route some slots into the sides for the front & back pieces to make assembly easier.
I'll gets pics once I start fitting it together.

I don't know why people complain about the dust from working with MDF though. :o
I wore the mini respirator I normally use when building something out of wood & still ended up blowing brown out of my nose. :'(

After the kids caught on to what I was doing they bugged me to make it into a Mario Bros. cabinet and I thought it might not look right but i've so far seen a few nintendo themed cabaret's so i may go for it.

i mocked some things up in cardboard & duct-tape and while a 2ft wide cabaret will accomodate two players and I can fit a 17" display i have no idea how it would be to play and if a crt would not stick out the back because you can only do so much with cardboard.

So i'm going to plan 2 players with 4 buttons in a neogeo arch config & attempt to hang a 17" crt on some scrap pieces in it with the front of the case removed and see how that works.

Still concerned about the viewing angle on that style Caberet with two players, but let us know how it goes.

Still concerned about the viewing angle on that style Caberet with two players, but let us know how it goes.

It goes like this?

It's just tacked together because I know I'll be adjusting the width.
But it's 24" deep and 25 1/4 wide on the outside.
Did I err?
That's  19 inch LCD on it.
I think I understand what you mean about viewing angle from an off center position but I believe when it's set flush it will be OK for two people if I go with my 17 CRT.
I can shave a few inches off the width also. I have a two player 4 button control panel (Jojo's venture and that is 22 1/4 wide ) so I can aim for that.

I have some angle brackets and carriage bolts I can mount on the inside sides to support the CRT and then I'll decase mine and mount it to some scrap pine I have and put my control panel on it also then throw something on the screen to see how it actually looks when you are standing off center working the controls.

This is coming along.
I have the proper bit for the button holes.
NOW.

Picking up some Lexan for the control panel so that player one button won't be sloppy anymore. :)

Settled on a standard NEO GEO control panel and overlaying the mario bros. control panel colors and a few characters.
I've cut the 19" LCD into it and fired it up.
I don't see any issues with viewing angle while standing on either side of center as if I was player 1 or 2 in a two player game.
Someone over 6ft maybe because of how far back the monitor is but i'm short and my kids will need step stools to see anyways.

Custom bezel also based off portions of the vector's i got online.
Going to have everything printed up on a laminated poster by officemax for now.
Can get bezel and control panel & marquee all on one sheet.

Have too many other things to pay for this summer.

I am however going to splurge a little on this:
the LED t-molding.

I've order white EL-Wire to put into it.
Along with white LED player 1 & 2 buttons and a white LED start button.
Then i'll pain the sides using the paint code I found for the mario bros orange.

I think it will look either really cool or completly horrid. :)

I am a little curious too. Did you finish this, or is it still a WIP?

Cab project I'm working on now is 5 years old already. Sometimes other priorities come up.
