Neo Geo Quicky restore Project
« on: April 07, 2016, 02:03:40 pm »
So a couple of weeks ago, I picked up a Two-Slot Neo Geo. This thing is a big heavy beast of a cab! My apologies for not having any up to date pics of it on this PC, but here she is when I picked her up.

Despite the two game flyers in the marquee being King of Fighters and Magical Drop 2, it had just a Bust-A-Move Again cart inside it. So I bought a 161 in 1 cart to put inside it after being sniped on 20 or so eBay auctions.

My plan for this restore is to recap and get a new flyback for the monitor as it needs some adjusting. Then paint the sides and front the proper red, and either stencil the white lettering or get a sticker set for it. Does anyone have any color recommendations for the color of red to use?  I will also being cleaning up the CPO a little bit to see if I can salvage it.

Any recommendations for this project?

I used Gloss Apple Red from Home depot on my neo. I do suggest white tmolding.

Stpcore has the files to cut the lettering out for the sides. Sure you already know this, but that doesnt look like a factory NeoGeo cab, marquee is all wrong.

Awesome! Did you roll or spray it?  And that white T-molding looks pretty sweet!

I will have to check that out.

Yup. It looks like a generic Jamma cabinet. The joker is huge and heavy as all get out! My Simpsons Cabinet was lighter and smaller than this thing! I found the Neo Geo kit paper work inside of it when I finally got the backdoor off of this beast of a cab. However, it is close enough in my opinion to pass, especially once I paint it red.

Totes.

I always roll my paint unless I'm rattle canning a metal CP or coin door.

Opening my cabinet up, I found storage boxes for World Heroes and Fatal Fury 2.  They still have a flyer and some other documents in there. Pretty neat. Sadly, I don't have the games or the Marquee artwork for them.

So, I picked up the paint that I needed at Home depot this Saturday, and good luck for me, as they were running it for $10 off that day! I wanted to get the first coat on it, but I spent all my time this weekend removing the adhesive left behind after I took off the 12"X16" kit stickers. I put on the adhesive remover, but that just loosen it up a little. I had to take a razor to the sides of it and scrap it off. I have on side done, but I still might want to go back over it with some more adhesive remover just to get that last little bit off. I should be able to get that done tonight and get it prepped for painting this week!

Well, I scraped the other side last night, but I am still not happy with the results. I am going to try scraping both sides one more time before painting the cabinet.

Anyone have any suggestions for cleaning up the marquee holders? Can I just rattlecan them or do I need to sand them with something first? If so, what kind of sandpaper?

use a random orbital sander and go over both sides to get them nice and smooth.

For the marquee brackets I sanded them down then sprayed with flat black rattle can that has primer built in.

60 before priming
100 on primer coats
220 on paint

No new pics yet, but I just got the second coat of paint on this cabinet! It is really starting to look like a Neo Geo arcade machine now!

lol. Yeah, I will get some pics tonight! I don't know how many coats I will put on this cabinet. I have an entire gallon, but I have only used about 15% of it with three coats, so I can put on as many as I would like, but when do you stop?

On a side note, I might have this evening without the family and if so, I plan on getting the control panel and marquee off of this machine, and get those cleaned up and polished!

You read the topic title right?

 ;D

Seriously though, I probably should, but so far, it hasn't been an issue. Each coat is lightly applied and it has turned out pretty smooth.

Here is a pic or two from this morning. I haven't done anything to it since I put on the third coat. I am thinking about giving it a light sanding before I put on another coat.

For some reason, it looks more orange here than in person.

Now you know how I felt trying to take a pic of the blue cab I painted.  Did you use the same paint as I did on my cab?

It is the same brand and type, but they didn't have Apple Red. They had something that looked just like it called race stripe red, and according to the paint mixing guy it was the same formula.

Looks great (from photos), but I would probably do like you said and sand the 3rd coat and add another to finish it off.

I finally got back on this project and I opened up my Neo Geo Two Slot and did a lot of cleaning. Wetvacced the cobwebs and loose dirt, found $3.65 in change, took the lock off the coin bucket door, Simple green for the caked-on dirt, and started disassembling the Control Panel to clean the plexi and CPO. Also, I removed the bezel for cleaning and polishing.

I still need to go back and sand and put another coat of red on it, but for now, I am working on getting it cleaned up!

I noticed that the Control panel, power supply, Neo Geo Board are all on a sliding piece of wood that wants to slide out the front. Also, the Control Panel seems to have originally been cut for a two player 6 button setup. Does that help anyone here to identify the cabinet's origin?

So I finally sanded the sides and got some paint on it. It needs a few more coats, but it looks great. I have also cleaned everything and polished all of the plexiglass on this thing. Anyone have any recommendations on where I can get some replacement buttons and some t molding?  I just need the buttons, as the joysticks are fine.

So, I have the sides all painted up and finished. I have the cabinet reassembled and everything looks a ton better now that I have cleaned it all. I will post some pics soon, but first I have a question. I took off the old t-molding, but the new t-molding isn't think enough to stay locked in the groove. Do I need to get special t-molding for this or should I get a lot of glue?

Glue, Silicone Caulk , Fill the gap with bondo and then reroute the Tmolding slot, Ive even heard about cutting strips of sandpaper and folding them in a V over the Tmolding spine.
