Exactly. There isn't any wiggle room on what is crap and what isn't if you have experience, that would have been the whole point. For monitors I don't know the exact ratio because I'm bad at "the mathz" in my old age, but the larger the screen, the further back the control panel has to be. So if that's the case then there's no point in having a exceedingly large monitor. There are some situations where it makes sense, like lightgun games and sometimes sim games, but that's because you stand/sit much further back. It's the same thing with tvs btw, which is why it boggles my mind that home theatres have caught on. A large display is for a large room, where the seats are far back and thus you need to make the image look the same as it would in a smaller room with a smaller tv. Unless you are one of those freaks that sits in the front row (seek help), the image your eye sees sitting somewhere in the middle of a movie house is just about the same size as your tv at home. I actually had problems with a modest 27 inch crt in my original mame cab.... it just wore my eyes out looking around. With the new lcd in it's more like 23-24 inches in 4:3, which I feel is about right. |

I find 25" in a standard cab is just a touch too big. Anything more in terms of playable area seems like too much. |

Yeah and I actually talked to my optometrist about this some time ago. (This was pre-lcds.) He said that if the screen is largish, like 25-27 that you really need to be 3 feet or more back because your eyes try to focus on the character which results in a lot of scanning and eye strain. So it's not just opinion. Much like how "blue light" from our modern devices are damaging your eyes, it's been proven. Which reminds me, I want to pick up some blue reading glasses that are all the rage in Japan... I've been told it could help with my headaches some. |

I went to tinted lenses a couple of years ago including a blue pair for reading and it is a wonderful thing. I also have yellow and amber for night driving and glowy screens. Headaches and eye fatigue vastly reduced. Will never go back. |

Well that's the hope. I haven't kept it a secret that I've been having some really bad problems over the past couple of years. I've been stable and in fairly good shape health-wise for the past few months, but I've noticed that as the winter months have kept me inside more, the symptoms are coming back. The headaches I can deal with, but the fact that it's starting to effect my blood pressure, meaning they might have to up the dosage on my beta blocker scares me a little. It's a little frustrating how having one minor thing wrong with you, combined with a few other minor things, can interact and make each other drastically worse. This whole healthy living thing sucks if you ask me, but seeing as how I intend to live forever I better get with the program. ;) |
