Has anyone modified a 4-8 way restrictor plate?

* Has anyone ever used a dremel to round out an old 4-8 way restrictor plate to make a circular plate?
* What is the difference between just removing the plate all together? Will this damage the joystick (something tells me that in the long run it will)?

Valid question indeed. I picked up 4 sanwa joysticks that are 4-8 way and was going to purchase a circular or octagonal base plate but thought that I would ask the question before dropping $50 plus shipping.
