DKJR Restoration - yep another one
« on: August 28, 2015, 09:36:34 am »
Continuing the Nintendo restoration trend...

I picked this gem up the other night, I was looking for it, it just fell into my lap and the price was right.

The Good:

Monitor just had a cap kit installed (looks fantastic)
Cabinet in great shape, no chips/gouges in the laminate
Both coin mechs work
Coin box still in it
Marquee, Bezel and CP have excellent artwork
Game works
Has coin door key

The Bad:

No side art
T-molding is dried up and cracked/chipped in multiple spots
Wrong jump button (at least it's a Nintendo button and not hacked)
Instruction card stained and starting to deteriorate
Instruction sticker on front panel is trashed
Panel below bezel is de-laminating
Joystick is crunchy(i doubt it was ever greased)
Marquee light not working
Top of coin door looks like it was kicked at some point.  The top right corner is bent in and it pushed the wood in about an inch

All of the bad should be really easy fixes and I hope to have this cleaned and shiney in a week or two.

Nick pickup! That thing looks so good it hardly qualifies as a restore.  ;)

Of course, you have probably seen my DK restore and I hoping when I'm done with it looks as good as yours is now.

An no "Ugly" items...man you are way ahead of the game.

Yeah, I've been looking at your thread, you have quite a bit more work to do than this one.  I'm concerned about the joystick on mine, it's pretty gritty.  We'll see how it is once I take it apart and clean it.

I can prolly do the art for you.

Nah, The joystick is the least of your concern. Nintendo joysticks are almost completely metal and no nylon to wear out. Usually just need a good cleaning as you said.

Just in case you didn't know, pretty much any replacement Nintendo cab part can be found on MikesArcade.com Including all the little joystick parts.

Your on top of my list.  I'm only 3 days into this so far, I haven't decided on what I'm doing with it just yet.  I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it or flip it.  If I keep it, maybe do a double kong conversion to it?  So for now, the artwork is on the back burner until the joystick/buttons are in good working order and I decide what direction I'm headed.  I did order cp bolts, the correct orange button and new t molding for it though

No, it popped up on my local 4x4 message board in the misc for sale.  Completely random.  It was in the front room of an auto shop collecting dust.

Ha! that certainly is random. I've been keeping an eye on eBay lately. (I know, it's a terrible place to find a cab) But I noticed a couple of DK Jr.s on there and wondered if one had gone your way.

A satisfying feeling to run across a good find in a random way. Always makes you feel like you flew under the radar and silently grabbed it before the die-hards find it.  ;)

I'm just outside Denver. The arcade scene out here is pretty lively. We have 2 arcade bars near Denver that are pretty stocked and we have both BYOC members Wyo and 34K here to. Wyo is a Nintendo cab guy and 34k is an "everything" guy but he specializes in Nintendo Red Tents. I'm sure there are other guys in Denver I havn't met yet.

I'm also told that Denver is a great place for Pinball enthusiast but I have not met any yet. I'd love to get into pinball at some point.

However, even with all that said...I feel like Craigslist in the Denver area is a dried up mess. I've been watching CL for months here and really don't ever see anything that looks good.

I did buy a beat up DK cab on CL here about a month ago and had to pay an arm and a leg for it because people are snatching them up left and right here because you don't see them come up often.

Nice starting point! Replacing the t-molding won't take long at all. Mine was about the same shape as yours and it came out in minutes and he new stuff when's in very quickly and easily. Just make sure to get the flat tmolding.

Took the joystick apart and cleaned it with some solvent, blew it out with air and filled with some white lithium and now it's good as new.  All worried for nothing.

I played (attempted) a few games on it and there's an issue with the jump button being laggy.  So I need to do some reading as to what that could be.  Sometimes you hit the button and it works, others...  not.

+1 on the white lithium grease. That stuff rocks. It doesn't run and doesn't attract dust either. Also doesn't have much odor. All of the above is the opposite for WD40. White lithium grease also works great on garage door springs too.

Received parts from Mike's Arcade and installed the new buttons and instruction card installed in the control panel.  Swapped the microswitches between Player 2 and Jump and the Jump button issue is resolved now.

Need to repair the laminate just above the control panel, any suggestions?

Funny you should mention that! I was over at Exidy's house a couple of months ago for a get together. Walked down into his basement and was like "oh wow, he has 5 arcades and 5 pinballs! Crazy!

...then I  walked out of the hallway in his basement and saw the other 40 arcades in the main area. I quickly put 2 and 2 together.

I need to network with Exidy and 1Up if I'm going to get anywhere.

You guys in Colorado are quite lucky. Trying to network with collectors /enthusiasts here in southern Alberta is a ---smurfing--- nightmare. If you're not a total hermit then you're a massive dickbag. Very very few people in our area are nice, helpful people. And don't get me started on the large local "vendor" SML.

I've noticed most collectors aren't huge fans of MAME, so I don't use that as a calling card. My dedicated cabs get my foot in the door. But honestly, we have a lot of great guys in the Phoenix community.

I'd restore it as close as you can to original condition, with or without the Double Kong art, but then still put the other game in.

Not much of an update, but I've ordered the side art for the cabinet.

It has 3 carriage bolts through the side of the cabinet that aren't holding anything.  I was thinking of removing the bolts and filling the holes, as the side art will cover them.

I'm also in need of the little bolts that hold the coin mechs to the door, Mike's is currently out of them.  Anyone have some spares they'd sell?

Good to see another Denver area DK jr :)

I just finished a restore myself. Used the ArcadeShop sideart, turned out great.

I live about 2 minutes from Exidy, where abouts in the Denver area are you?

If your talking to me, just east of the city, only 1650 miles outside of town.

On another note, I have new side art, hopefully I'll be putting it on this weekend and be able to update the thread with photos

Been longer than expected on this restore, but I do have an update.

Before:

As you can see in the above photo, the laminate below the bezel has 2 pieces broken off.  What is hard to see is that the laminate's glue gave way on a lot of it.  I tried and failed to track down a piece of matte/satin black laminate piece to fit this and I'm not willing to buy a 4x8 sheet for such a small section.  So what I did do is removed the damaged laminate using a heat gun and putty knife, then cleaned the old glue off and sanded the piece smooth.  I then applied a piece of Satin black 3m vinyl along with a new instruction sticker.

After:

Next up is applying the new side art
