Need Help with ATI TV Out, Please
« on: July 04, 2002, 07:20:25 am »
Hey all- My Cab is now 98% Done, but I'm running into a problem with my Radeon 8500 TV out In Windows XP. I'm sending out S-Video andeverything seems fine, Except for certain games. The problem is that the TV is only showing a portion of the image, and pans around as I move the mouse.

For example, Tempest: I Only see a quarter of the screen while actually playing, but as I move my spinner, it pans side to side. Meanwhile I can see the entire screen on my PC monitor.

Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks for reading this,

Okay, so the Raden creates a 'virtual desktop' on the TV when the resolution istoo high for the TV. I tried forcing the resolution using the -resolution switch in both MAME and MAME32. The problem now is that they both start games in a window now : (

THis is gonna be a challenge...

Both.......

I have foud that hitting alt-enter twice jumps it to full screen. Now if I can just get it to do that automagically...

I have a radeon 8500 and have the same problem, but only when I have a monitor attached with at a resolution higher than 1024x768(the highest my tv can go).  if your tv is the only video attached now, then keep the resolution below the max your tv can go, otherwise it will pan around the 'vitual desktop' at the higher res.  You can find out what the max is in the display Settings - Advanced - Displays - click on TV.  make sure the TV is set as the primary display if you are using the extended desktop functions(multiple monitors).  I suspect the vecotr games might be drawing at a much higher res than other games.

I totally dig ATI's multiple display formats, they are quite flexible.  It's a little tricky learning all the ins and outs though initially  :-/

Thanks, but I'm still up a creek. I tried making the TV my primary, locking the maxres for the monitor at 1024x768 (This resulted in a virtual desktop for both the monitor AND TV!), so I'm taking a break from it now...

You are right about it being all the vector games...

Most tv-outs will only go up to 800x600 before they only show part of the screen.  If you are having games that are "too big" have Mame use a smaller resolution.  Have you tried booting with only the tv attached (no pc monitor) to see if your tv will be primary then?

I have a the dual head version of that card... and I also had that problem.  Recently, I went to load open gl drivers into the system.. and it made my card support resolution up to 1024*768 on my TV !!!   ATI may also have new drivers that will do the same.. though I havnt checked.  Unfortunately, Its made the picture too sharp (in my opinion :)  lol.   There are adjustments that may help though..as I havnt really played arround with it much yet.

Only other thing you can do... is to force all vector games to use 800*600 as a defalut.

Oh.. and also,  are you trying to run the tv as a seperate 'window' ?   Mame takes full control anyway... so its better to run fullscreen.  You will get a duplicate screen on both tv and monitor... just turn off the monitor if it distracts you... or... run a tv only cab.. or, make a black sheet or small door to hide the pc monitor.

Hey, I also have a Radeon 7500 w/ TV-Out powering my setup, but I keep windows at 640x480 resolution on the TV.

Anyhow, you should check out the Radeonator software at http://users.skynet.be/bk265512/indexFramed.htm. It's got a bunch of tweaks and may have something that could help with the auto-panning.

Just a suggestion though, good luck.

I tried running the monitors as seperate 'windows' but ran into too many issues. So now the Monitor and TV show the same image - ( I think the TV IS the primary right now, but I need to double check). The max resolution on the TV is 1024 * 768. Unfortunately, the max res on the monitor / vid card is some ungodly number, and I think that is what is causing me problems.

Is there an easy way to lock the resolution for just vector games, or am I going to have to set it manually, each time?

Thanks again!

I run Mame32 or simular,  and all you have to do is go to the 'Advanced' tab and select a resolution.  Im sure that its not all that hard to do it in standard mame, by editing the config file for each game that you desire.

PS: Just tried messing with vector games.  Increase your setting under vector 'Beam' for a better tv picture.

Do this:

-Set the desktop to the highest your tv-out supports, probably 800x600 @ 60Hz.

-Turn on the TV output.

If you are using win32 MAME, then do this for each game that has this problem: (tempest is the example). I assume that you want it to be 800x600 for the tv-out.

- make sure you have a mame.ini. If not, type mame -cc at a command prompt to create it.

- copy mame.ini to tempest.ini (or whatever the game zip name is). Leave it in the root MAME folder with mame.ini.

- edit the resolution entry in tempest.ini to 800x600 instead of auto.

-repeat for each game as needed.

For MAME32, just change the resolution from auto to 800x600 in the settings for "this game".

You might want to try this Omega/Plutonium driver. ;)

http://www.omegacorner.com/ati.htm

I don't have any problems running the TV at 1024x768 with vector games. I hope it works as well for you.;)

Set the TV res to 800x 600 @ 60 Hertz.  I can't imagine that you'd benefit from a higher res unless you have a TV bigger than 31".

Turn off hardware strecth if it is enabled for the vector games.  This should get them all to display properly if you use also specify games' res as 800x600 (or auto-select).

There are very few instances where HW strecth actually helps.  Using it by default for all games will create some issues with Radeon and TV-out that can be manually fixed for each game, as mentioned above.  I find it easier just to disable it by default for all games, and only using it for specific games for which it helps.

I use MAME32, so HW stretch is an option in the "Options" --> Default Options menu.

If you use another GUI front-end, you'll have to consult the documentation for hw-strecth.  If you're using a command line version, gte a front-end :)
