  • Loving my cabinet, built summer 2015
While I've enjoyed building the cab, I definitely got into in order to play games and reliving that arcade experience.  I would have bought one but I like customization too much.  Anything that costs this much and takes this much time should function like you want it (not wanting to play Ikari Warriors with a proper rotary joystick would have saved me so much $$!).

But there are people who are definitely into the hobby of building and making more so than the actual gaming part of it.

Which are you?

for mame? started out as playing games.

Now I restore actual cabs and its far more cathartic.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

I started with the intent of playing the games.  Mind you, I LOVE the games, but I discovered that I really enjoy the creative process of the build.  I'm gonna try my hand at a restore soon, looking forward to that!

Haven't played an arcade game in a couple months... Play pinball everyday though. Currently building a multi for my nephew.

I'm definitely a tinkerer as of right now. Like Malenko said, I started with MAME, then it snowballed into purchasing cabs and doing an unhealthy amount of researching.

I love to play mame but I find myself spending more time tinkering with setting, trying out front ends, and such.  I recently got a raspberry pi and I been trying to figure that out. I am a Linux rookie but figuring it out is part of the fun.

This is the ultimate hobby.

I mean, what other hobby brings together design, art, electronics, woodworking and any number of others you care to bring to your project and smash all that together to play a video game or two?

Have a welding background? Weld up a cab framework.

Have a CAD/3D design bg?
Mock up your cab digitally first.

Got mad painting skills?
Screw vinyl, paint the side art on by hand!

I think this hobby appeals to us all because we can all make it our own.  We all choose how far down the rabbit hole to go and are still able to find new innovations.

I started the journey to play games... but very much enjoy getting lost along the way.

So yeah... I like the tinkering bit!

Started building up my own cabinet (a youth dream) with MameWah..
Then, being an IT professional, together with a friend, I moved to designing and developing my own FE to have something nearer to our needs.
When I found it mature and (hopefully) consistent, I published it, and started implementing others' needs.
Now I almost only develop: my cab's room has become my little daughter's bedroom (sigh :-) ), and my "beast" is switched on almost only to receive last FEEL updates.. When I can :-)
But even if I play very rarely, I always "need" to have my oldie-goldies with me.. So I have setup emus on almost anything: PC, smartphones, raspi, old consoles.. Anything capable to run them which comes handy.
In these days I'm on holidays, so I am playing around with the oldest PS2 I left years ago in our mountains flat :-)

I definitely enjoy the builds, but for me it is about gaming. Gaming is a big part of my social life. Often times I will have "game nights" where the ladies will be huddled around World Class Bowling or whatever, and the guys will be sitting around drinking waiting for their turn that never comes. Or vice versa with the guys on golden tee or rampage or a beat em up.
