Ok so far so good. I upgraded a pc that basically didn't have much of anything on it. My observations thus far: (compared to win 7)
I'm not sure how long it took to install because I was busy and just let it run, but it's safe to say it took a while.
After it actually installed, the install went smoothly. I didn't have to re-install registered apps and what-not.
Games DO seem to run a bit faster. Don't get your hopes up, it's like 4 or 5 fps on my machine, but if the game is on the cusp of running...
.net apps are MUCH faster. Ati guys, you know where opening the control center takes FOREVER? Yeah it's instant now. I don't know if .net is fully integrated or what but it's a big difference.
Hard drive access is faster. "Huh?" You say? I don't get it either, but on this machine you could load up MK: KE and the progress bar would stall and stutter as things were loaded off the HDD, but not anymore. It's also noticeable in the file explorer, but not as much.
The UI is cleaner and runs smoother. Even if something is chugging along in the background, explorer and the desktop don't stall, which is a first on windows if you ask me.
The new "edge" internet browser is crap. Mind you it's really fast and runs well, but it doesn't support extensions and plugins yet, making it fairly worthless.
Remote Xbox one mode is bad-ass. It works flawlessly and even lets me use my old 360 gamepad. It should prove useful for running those arcade games that don't get ported to the pc on a cab... assuming you use 360 gamepads for your controls of course. I've got a hard line to the xbox, you might get different results via a wireless connection, but for me at least you couldn't tell it was streaming, and there weren't any visual artifacts or lag or anything.
Window's default viewers still suck. I tried to play a video on my hdd... sound only..... codecs weren't working. I tried again on mpc and it played fine. This wasn't some exotic codec either, but rather the default youtube format.
My busted old vs6-created apps still work great, including Outrun FXT and the weird-assed hack I used to add overlays to the game, which was surprising. I want to test my busted old development tools as well. Mamehooker needs to be thoroughly tested, because, well, it does a lot of weird stuff.
Some basic tasks seem to be quicker... for example when I plugged in my 360 gamepad it didn't have to think for a while... it just installed the driver and worked almost immediately.
If somebody wants me to test something let me know.
