Right now, I think any movie staring the rock will make bank. So why not one based on an 80's video game? Will probably make more than pixels. :) |

Sheesh. I love that movie and have never ever made that connection. Good point. --- Quote from: Howard_Casto on June 25, 2015, 12:37:16 pm ---He's also starring in the remake of Big Trouble in Little China, which is essentially the film responsible for Mortal Kombat... so yeah... that's odd. --- End quote --- |

Well it's been confirmed in several interviews with Boon and Tobias. MK1 was a combination of Big Trouble in Little China, Enter the Dragon and those old 70's chop-suey films. They wanted Van Damme to be the main character in the game but it fell through, so they added a Brue Lee clone to the game. This is why Johnny Cage (the Van Damme character) was on the side of the MK1 cab even though Liu Kang is the main hero in the series..... until MKII he wasn't. This is also why Cage has always been portrayed as sort of a ---meecrob--- in his endings.... Van Damme wanted too much money so they poke fun at him. Ironically he later stars in Street Fighter, the movie, the game... which is just awful. Kano's inspiration should be obvious. Sonya was put in at the last minute because the Midway brass said there should be a female character... she's partially inspired by Sharon Stone in Total Recall. But yeah Raiden, Shang Tsung and a few others were straight from BTILC. |

I've seen that movie at least 20 times and MK was my go-to game for a long time. Oops. |

I noticed the resemblances between MK and BTiLC when MK first hit the scene and I saw Raiden for the first time. I just assumed that both games were drawing upon common Chinese mythos. Kind of like how GoW draws upon Greek myths (loosely), or Never Alone which is supposed to be a bit more accurate representation of an Alaskan myth. :dunno Quite honestly, I never really thought about it much beyond noticing the similarities. After all, a whole shitload of folklore and mythology have made their way into video games in one form or another. What's one more addition? ;D |
