Is this possible to convert my cab?
« on: May 26, 2015, 10:33:41 pm »
I've been reading alot and seem to keep getting more and more confused. I am wondering if I could convert a dual old grand prix 2 cab (which has crusin USA) in to to have both the original jamma along with a pc that has mame capabilities to run more racing games.. The thing I would like to do is use the pedals, steering wheel, and shifter from the original cabs.

Is this possible to switch between both and keep the same hardware? If so, what would I need to do and get? Also, I have a need for two 25" crt monitors, what are best places to get.

Thanks

It is fairly easy to wire up the original controls if you're willing to give up force feedback.
If you want the force feedback to work, the easiest way is to use an Immersion USB board found in some newer arcade games.
See the "Interfacing Original Arcade Controls" section of the driving cab info thread stickied at the top of this forum.

Can't help with the monitors.

There's a reason a lot of us just end up plunking a PC wheel and TV into our cabs.
I'd bet most of the games that would work with the original connector are playable in MAME or some other emulator.

I'm not familiar with Grand Prix 2, nor could I find it listed on KLOV so pictures would help.

If you're primarily interested in swapping between Cruisn' and a PC then that's not too difficult to accomplish but it will require A LOT of custom wiring and your options are extremely limited when it comes to forcefeedback. as BadMouth mentioned the Imersion USB board is probably the best bet for that as I believe it's compatible with the HAPP FFB motor (which IIRC is what Cruisn' uses, but I could be wrong).

normally when doing a JAMMA/MAME build you use a JPAC as your PC interface board and then get a JAMMA switcher and call it a day, with a setup like this though you're probably looking at buying and using both those thing and then building a completely separate switcher from scratch to switch all of the other wires that aren't part of the JAMMA harness, not to mention building a custom harness to tie it all together.

As for monitors you'll want to use Medium resolution monitors as that's what Cruisn' uses. and most racing cabs are 27" not 25" (you'll want to make sure that's what you cab need before you buy a pair.) For MAME use you might be best trying to source Tri-Sync monitors as that will make hooking them up to your PC as easy as just plugging them in and setting your resolution to 640x480. If you go with Medium resolution monitors you'll need to use CRT_EmuDriver and a Ati HD4xxx model Graphics card in order to get the correct output resolutions for the monitors.
