Stargate Restoration-ish
« on: May 21, 2015, 06:06:50 pm »
I got a converted Stargate for cheap and I am bring it back.  The wiring is fine, but I think the PSU is toast.  Bought the marquee, bezel, and now I'm looking at the control panel.  How often do these wooden CPs come up in auction?  I am also looking at converting it into an Anniversary Edition, and the artwork will only cover the top of the CP, the exterior bucket of the CP needs stripping as does the sides of the cab.  I'm having no luck sourcing a CRT so a LCD is going in there temporary.  No boards, so I am not sure if it will be cheaper just to mame it.

Lots to do.

Pictures to follow.  Honest!!

Ok after looking at the wiring harness (and I am glad I did, nearly bought a Jpac off a friend of mine)  it has been really cut up.  The original harness it might be, but unless I get another loom, I will use what I have for the Kades.

I replaced the Marquee light (do these sell on ebay?) with a LED bar that should save on the electricity and the environment as it is good for 12 years.  After trying to clean the paint off the sides of the cab (good job I stopped) the existing paint came up pretty good.  I removed the WWF side art as it was just on by adhesive.

I'm not a fan of the stargate stenciled look so I will just buy some decals for the sides and call it a day.  The T-Molding needs replacing, joys and buttons work but they are a mix of microswitch and Seimitsu, and to be honest even if it is a cramped control panel, I would want leafs in there.  I'm waiting on the artwork to be quoted and finalized, but I have a ton of work before I can apply it.

The Coin Mech lights are not working, so I will have to either install a PC PSU or get another Arcade PSU.  I tested the installed PSU and I cannot get any voltages out of it.  I wonder if there are some fuses inside the unit that can be replaced.  The monitor transformer was going into the trash, but I thought it better to keep it in there for posterity.

It is just filthy in there.  30 years of yuck in there, but it is cleaning up slowly.

Have you thought about picking up the JROK multi Williams PCB?

I would if the harness was all there, but to be honest I am a cheap guy at heart, so I will stick with Mame until I get an arcade monitor.

What does it sound like to you?  How many restorations have you done?

I am not sure what the relevance of how may restorations I have done is here unless it is to prove that I know what "restoring" means, which I believe I do.  But unless I am missing something what you are talking about doing  sounds like you are going to put MAME in this cabinet, which is not restoring it.  I would consider that more of a "conversion". For example I have a Moon Patrol cabinet that was converted to a fighting game when I got it.  I fixed up the cabinet, repainted it, put Multi-Williams control panel, bezel, and artwork on it, and an ArcadeSD JAMMA board in horizontal mode. That is not a restoration (in fact it is not really even a Multi-Williams).  I would consider that project more of a conversion at best.  On the other hand I have an Asteroids Deluxe that was converted to a Trivia cabinet.   I gutted it, repaired it, sourced original parts, and turned it back in to an Asteroids Deluxe with original PCB, power brick, wiring harness, control panel, marquee, bezel, half silvered mirror, 3D back drop, vector monitor, etc.  That was more of a restoration, with a couple of compromises where I used reproduction artwork where original is no longer available.  With those compromises there are purist that wouldn't even call that a restoration.

If I misunderstood your project, I apologize.  But I don't think that I did unless MAME is a placeholder for you while you obtain all of the original parts needed to make the game back into a fully functional Stargate running with the original PCB.

Well these projects do not happen overnight.  I plan to restore this cabinet, with an arcade CRT, Jroks board but it will take time and money.  Nothing wrong with mame for the time being.  Time and cash is of short supply.

Sorry a new job is interfering.  I'll get some pics up this weekend.  I replaced the lighting and got it to play some games.  I don't like the LCD so it will get replaced when I find a decent arcade monitor or a 20" TV.  I have yet to tackle the CP and get some more of the WWF Superstars artwork off.  I'm glad we moved this to projects than restorations as I still don't know if I can restore it back.  The gunk on the sides looks daunting.

And sliced some fingers on the CP latches too.  :lol

good day.

Started work on it again.

I got the TV installed, bought a amp and got the speakers to work, modded a temporary xbox until I get a JROK board.  Ordered new buttons and joys for the multi-Williams.  I have yet to remove the paint from the sides and put in a new CP and artwork.  I finally have some time now to devote to this project.

Well there has been some progress.  I bought a 2 way joystick and a new control panel, but it needs several layers of bondo (more like several buckets of the stuff), where the original control panel has less to cover up.  Secured new buttons and nearly killed myself decasing the TV.  I might go the 20" LED monitor route.  Lots of prep work to do, and remove the paint off the sides.

Pictures to follow
