Anyone got a console repair place they trust?
« on: May 15, 2015, 10:17:33 am »
My PS4 is driving me bonkers.  Keeps crashing for 10-15 minutes until it warms up and then it'll play fine for hours.  Out of warranty*.  I figure a reball would get it going again.

If anyone has a console repair service they've used and had good experience with, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

(* don't buy launch hardware)

Walmart.  You just buy another PS4, then swap them, and return the broken one.  Im kidding, I have no idea where to get it fixed, but you hit the nail on the head on why I stopped buying launch hardware.

I managed a Gamestop back in the day, made me feel dirty selling launch hardware.  :(

Yeah, that may end up happening.  Or I just sell the damn thing as-is and disclose the problems with it.  Make me an offer, Malenko.

Nah I think it's like earrings.... only the left ball makes you gay.  Or is that backwards?

Seriously though, I'd be complaining to Sony.... warranty be damned, most reputable companies extend the warranty of a launch console.  I know both M$ and Nintendo did last gen when their launch units were having issues.  If nothing else they typically offer a repair service for a modest fee.

Hitting things seems to solve a lot of problems strangely enough.  Just remember not to try it on the Wife/Girlfriend and if you try it on the kids, do so in private.

So far mostly good with the whack it repair.  I've been stress testing it and only one failure thus far.  Problem is clearly cold solder somewhere which is aggravating but I can live with it.

Did put P.T. through the paces again "just in case" this thing fully croaks.

OMG, the Fonze is dreamy, although I was a little embarrassed when he battled wits with Mork (WOOOOAH)....Anyway, if the warranty is no good, couldn't you just open the case and fix it yourself?

What is there to fix?  Repairs on this thing aren't particularly well documented.  Sure, I could slap a refurbed power supply in there but I doubt that's going to fix issues where the system gets glitchy and ultimately crashes 20 minutes into a game.  I beat the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- out of it last night with a rubber mallet just to get it to power on long enough to spit my disc out.

At some point you've got to cut and run.  I was holding out for a console revision but for $150 I can make this problem go away... so here we are.

20 min glitches sound like a heat/connection problem.... Open it up, post some pics, lets see whats in there to fix. unless of course you already smashed it with that hammer.

It should maybe be pointed out, Jenn does NOT repair consoles, However I do express my interest in the engineering aspect of such. There may be some silly idea in there (from a design/construction and even theory of operation) standpoint that could be utilized in some other project....Think inside the box man!!!

Used one with a warranty would run me about $275.

If you're willing to make up the cost difference between that and the cost of my repair ($150), I'm certainly willing to take you up on it.

I just watched a hangbelly tear one down on the tubes, Seems there is plenty of documentation since they apparently haven't changed much over the years. Processer speeds would point more towards a pc shop than your kitchen table however, And I would almost venture a wager that your local game store would give you a pretty substantial core trade on another system.

Well, well, look what FedEx threw over my fence.

But this is what I like to see:

Full disclosure - I submitted this as a warranty repair.  Then when the box showed up, it had a threatening letter saying if it was out of warranty they'd send it back and blacklist it.  So I called and gave them my credit card number.  Then I mail it in.

10 days later, I get a "send us a receipt or we send this back unrepaired" email.

I have no sympathy for companies that won't take my money.  The date got altered on my invoice and I sent them a scan.  Do what thou wilt.

Two days later - thanks, we'll repair it now and notify you when it ships.

One week later, here it is unannounced.

I made discreet marks on everything with a sharpie before it went in.

Here are the results - Old case, new hard drive cover, new hard drive and power supply.

So far so good with Far Cry 4 which ultimately killed it before.

They give you the box to ship it in or did you have to provide your own?

They shipped me an empty box, I put the PS4 into it, and shipped it back.  They sent the PS4 to me in another box.  Sony paid for the shipping both directions.

My repair status at Sony says they're still working on it.

Who knows... maybe another system will land in my backyard next week.

Woke up at 5am to play through Far Cry 4 long enough to get one of the little helicopters.  Promptly took that thing into the air and fly around the map.  That instantly crashed the system before, but so far so good with whatever they did to it.
