Semp Toshiba 29" PAL-M / NTSC TV
« on: May 08, 2015, 09:25:48 am »
Hi Everyone,

I have a Semp Toshiba 29" PAL-M / NTSC TV working with native resolutions like a Arcade Monitor (RGB-Component conversor and CRT_Emudriver).

I got native resolutions but when I use GroovyMame with VMMaker set as NTSC TV I only got like 8-9 resolutions. I'm pretty sure I was getting way more resolutions with the regular version of MAME and a much better image-dots-scanlines in many games. Some other games didn't work (like space invaders, pac-man, popeye and others).

My question is:

    1) When my TV is hoocked via RGB (either with SCART or component conversion) how should I set it with VMMaker.ini? Like NTSC?

    2) Is there some way to find out the CUSTOM Specs of my specific TV Hardware? It's a Semp Toshiba 29" from the early 2000's. I'm not sure of the model as I don't have the instructions manual anymore and it was removed from the original chassis and installed at a real Arcade cabinet. I'm not sure if I can find out the model from the circuit board. UPDATE: Find out the model: It's a Semp Toshiba TV2981JAVS LEM6 Semp Toshiba and the cinemascope is a SAMSUNG A68QBT892X05. I got the Service Manual for it but I'm not sure on what I'm supposed to look for... :( Please help!

UPDATE: Figured out how GM works. Sorry for all the newbie questions.
I'm pretty sure this was awsered before but are there any presets for PAL/PAL-M/NTSC TVs for GM? I was running Mortal Kombat at native progressive resolution but when I started messing up with GroovyMame it started to run interlaced. I'm a little bit lost in here and not really sure on how to setup mu particular TV with GrovyMame. Appreciate any help!!

Thank you!!
Marcelo.

Hi tiobolinha,

Don't use the PAL/NTSC presets. Specially if your TV supports multi-standard, just use the 'arcade' presets, probably the arcade_15 one will be good. In vmmaker just leave the default settings ("custom").

Hi Calamity,

Your drivers just made my dream real.

I was making a bunch of silly mistakes like using GM, VMMaker and CRT_Emudriver from different versions.

Once I updated everything I just got 119 resolutions right away. Vertical games look amazing (just those small bars in the top and bottow of the screen which don't bother me at all). Capcom and NeoGeo games are running at native resolutions, Mortal Kombat great and everything else good.

The only game that's still running interlaced is Popeye which is medium res.

Is there a way of testing my CRT to the limit (beyond the official specs I mean) to see if it supports higher resolutions? I mean any kind of "fire testing" to see if my hardwae can handle higher resolutions than the standard 15 khz?

I'm very happy with my arcade. It looks way better than any monitor I have played in the 80's and 90's.

Regards my friend!
Marcelo.

I don't know for yours but my 3 TVs (Philips from the early 90s, SONY FE1A, B&O MX something) work fine under arcade15_extended preset specs. That means they can work up to 16.2 kHz. Actually most work well at 16.5 kHz and the Philips can even go up to 17.2 kHz, but then some distortion appears.

Anyway you can test your tv capabilities using ArcadeOSD, increasing the horizontal freq incrementally (by adding lines) until the image gets "wrong" (all messed up). Just be careful and be prepared to hit the ESC key as soon as you get into such a mode. Also keep the vertical freq under 61 Hz.

If you get scared of burning your set then simply don't try to push it over 16.2 kHz. The only real reason (to me) to go higher is to get 256 lines games with relatively high refresh rate (like R-TYPE) displayed correctly (needs approx. 16.5 khz).

Thank you for your coments. 16.5 khz would be enough for Popeye to be displayed in progressive mode? If I would need a 25 khz display to do so then I'll just pack things up with Arcade_ex like you said. kkkk.

Regards!

Thats the native resolution of Popeye:  512 x 448i, 60Hz.... so there is nothing wrong with it, if it runs interlaced, because it was meant to run this way, also it is not medium res. it would be medium res, if it would be running progressive.
GroovyMame always try to use native, pixel-perfect resolution... so thats why you see Popeye in interlaced ;)

Thank you for your explanation. I always thought Popeye natively ran in a medium res progressive monitor. I didn't know the original hardware was interlaced!

We always learn something new around here! kk.

Just giving an update about my monitor: When it gets to 16.2 khz it starts to show distortion in the upper part of the screen. I locked it at 15 to 15.9 khz and it's perfect. I'll keep it this way.

Regards.

Sorry for my late answer. Yes, most TVs won't reach 16 kHz properly, only the Sonys seem to do. Arcade monitors tend to be more tolerant but not all.
