  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Gas Fire Arcade
« on: May 02, 2015, 11:17:30 am »
Well i'm a bit way on with this build now and actually have some pics so maybe its of interest if you like weird ideas  :D

It all started with an old Gas Fire that was going to be thrown away and of course when that's about to happen the only logical option is to turn it into a mini arcade machine...right?

The plan was to use as much of the original as possible (with minimal modifications), so all bracket etc were taken or made from the frame.

This is the guy in question :

Well it was stripped down and this is how the side panel looks :

You can't tell me the original designer didn't want this to be an arcade machine.

A few brackets made up from the back panel and a few bits of wood glued and screwed to the sides and we get this :

The control panel uses the original panel from the front of the gas fire and with a bit a wooden support for its internals ended up like this :

While i was at it the panel thats on the side used to house the on / flame amount switch and a gasometer for temp.

So with a little modification the on/flame switch became the volume. I installed a little red on button and a usb for any service requirements so i don't have to open the machine up. I was planning on converting the gasometer to display like a VU Meter but after testing i couldn't work out 100% how to make it, so for now it's off the build plan (though easy to add later).

Anyways it now looks like this :

The Sides were joined together and the control panels installed :

The internals are made up a MSI wind netbook (the screen is the perfect size)
Audio board is one of those mini usb powered pam chip types.
Control board is the zero delay usb adapters on ebay.

Everything fits nicely inside with loads of space lol considering its overall foot print and looks like this :

Back door is just a vent / carry handle and power socket. and as you've probably spotted the original chrome has be cut down to match the width and carry on the original Gas Fire's design.

This is were i'm currently up to :

I just need a piece of perspex for the front, a power supply fitting and to finish off the mala frontend.

Then it's re-oiling the wood finish to try and bring it up a bit and its all done.

I'm actually pretty pleased with it, it occupies a floor space of 23cm wide x 28cm Deep and 39.5cm High at the widest points.

It maybe a worlds first i dunno lol it was never the intention anyway, but it was built on a whim and just for fun.

It looks tiny compared to the Donkey Kong bartop i built a while back. It was built for vertical games, but 4:3 with marquees etc displayed look quite good aswell.

Cheers guys.

The hardest bit was probably working out how to jiggle things slightly so it still hid all the original and now unused screw holes.

When i finally decide where to put it, it'll also have its original id plate reattached, as its date of manufacture was 1979 seems daft not to put it back on. :)

Tbh my original intention if it turned out ok was to sell it (if anyone wanted it), as i don't really need it what with having the larger DK bartop...BUUUUT i don't think i can let it go now.

I could always try fitting the netbook batteries in there (i think they're still good for about 4 hours use) and turn it into a travel arcade. Good for traffic jams / bus / train journeys lol.

So true!  :lol Not just the side panels but the control panels seem perfectly suited to this conversion.

Really cool project. Looks like you did a great job making the guts fit, and I love that you were able to incorporate the original controls. (I hope you can get that VU meter working.)

Haha cheers.

I wasn't sure i could get it all in but in the end there's quite a bit of space...its certainly not easy to wire up / remove the control panel but then fingers crossed i won't need to fiddle with those bits that often.

The VU Meter attempt i must have spent nearly 24hrs on/off just fiddling about, staring blankly, looking online...and so far i've still got no idea lol.

If i connect the ac speaker signal direct the meter it jumps about quite happily (though manic), once its down to dc (which i believe the meter uses) it has very little to no movement at all depending on the game.

I'm convinced it's going to be such a simple thing to make work, if only i understood electronics lol.

If anyone has any ideas i'm more than happy to listen :D

One small update : re-oiling the wood has went pretty well most of the faded areas (see side pic up top) seem to have vanished, others still need some work. Though it was never meant to look brand new so i can accept some uneveness.

Cheers,

I've stopped re-oiling the wood veneer...for now. One sun faded area is putting up a fight and maybe unfixable without messing with stains.

Installed the cpu fan properly, no longer dangling about.

Pretty much finished the mala frontend, if i can stop fiddling about with it.  ::)

Also finished (i think) messing about with the artwork files for some of the games to make them fit the vertical  1024 x 600 layout a little / a lot better.

And because it'd be rude not too, finished making the screensaver video clip for the cab. Which i'll give you's a hint its not an aquarium video.

You just need Hilda Ogden in a pair of slippers playing it now.

I had to search to see who were talking about haha. But yeah she'd have to fight me for it, considering its size it's very easy to play on.

Still need to get round to buying a power supply and perspex front, which if i stop being lazy i might get round to doing this week.

Tiny update...after delaying the finishing off (for no good reason).

Power supply has been installed, fits nicely on the back door after i made up some brackets (looks kinda like those old mouse holsters you could buy to put on the side of your pc monitor) so all that comes out when you open up the machine for easy access to everything else.

Original ID plate is now attached dead center on the backdoor, seemed the most logical place.

Few little tweaks here and there, mainly with the joystick adapter...trying to workout button combos for different options is a bit trickier when you don't have the super easy ipac shift button to do things.

Still need to buy the perspex, should really get around to measuring that as it's probably the easiest bit of the build lol.

But anyways it should be all done and dusted very soon.

Well after literally wiping the dust of this project it's all done!! minus some software tweaking...and i have the pics to prove it, nearly didn't believe it myself haha.

Ended up using 6mm thick glass look perspex, thickness just because that's how wide i cut the grooves and glass look because it was only an extra £1 and i was curious.

Not a lot more to add so i'll let the pics do most of the talking.

Front :

Back :

And a few of it turned on.

Mala Menu :

Close up for those interested :

Plus a couple of game shots so you can see how the 1024 x 600 screen looks in use, pretty much spot on in my opinion (mame has a filter on to help mess up the smooth picture haha - just one of those .png overlays though i also tweaked that as well).

Dkong :

Pacman :

And a couple of the 4:3 games which you can see look pretty nice with all the artwork on.

Psycho Soldier :

Metal Slug (Only slightly tweaked from stock as i removed the bezel and fiddled with the padding a little bit) :

Finally last but not least, a gas fire without flames is just wrong. So i filmed a bit of real fire, tweaked it a bit, made it into a video clip and turned it into the screensaver...I felt it needed it just for the giggles.  ;D

Tried to make it look a bit like the laserdisc games in terms of quality so it matched the era.

Pretty pleased with how it's turned out.

Any questions gimme a shout.  :D

Cheers guys.

I was actually surprised how good the "fire" looks in action. :lol

Only issue i had was i couldn't get mala to loop the .gif without it blanking the screen briefly as it reached the end, so i ended up with something like a 30 to 60 minute looping video...not really a big deal as the .mp4 file is only something like 150mb.

Considering the build was only based on a quick sketch and the rest was worked out as i built it,  it all went together really smoothly. Excluding a few stupid mistakes i made where i had to re-cut some pieces (luckily having enough spare bits).

Original Concept Sketch (if you're curious :) ) :

Haha Cheers,

Tweaked the software side a little bit more, just trying to hide XP...custom bootlogo etc.

Example of the boot logo, nice and original lol (though this is actually the desktop background) :

I was having issues with it stretching the 640 x 480 image over the 1024 x 600 lcd and while not hideous, i couldn't leave it alone (I apparently didn't have anything better to do lol).  So a bit of fiddling about and i've got it close enough, its roughly a few pixels here or there and compared to the look of the old super stretched version i'm happy. :)

So for the 1024 x 600 lcd (in case anyone is also using the same size lcd) :

1024 / 640 = 1.6
600 / 480 = 1.25

640 / 1.6 = 400
480 / 1.25 = 384

400 x 384 becomes your new squashed image size.

Resize the original finished 640 x 480 image to 400 x 384 (It will now look all distorted, big surprise eh :D) and then copy / paste the squashed image into a new 640 x 480 image and save to the usual 16 colours etc.

Now use the new image as your boot image / kernel image etc. It'll stretch to match your screen size while keeping the correct aspect ratio for the original image as near as damn it.

Most won't have to go through the hassle but if the lcd resolution is weird it should help up to a point.

Actually I never did...though to be honest once i'd built it and it was playable (playable being the key word here), I kinda stopped trying haha.

I might look into it again, especially if i can use something pre built.
