I played an arcade machine with angled joysticks

I met a guy who had to show me his machine. It was crapMame material, but he was so proud. It had angled joysticks for 3 & 4. I know, I know, it's so bad he is the devil etc etc.

...It took me like a minute to get used to. It wasn't a deal breaker. I think anyone could play it and get used to it. Kind of made me want to build a 4 player machine, with angled X arcade joysticks, a widescreen, and a trackball on the left.

I have played on angled joysticks before and had no problem. Whenever I bring up that fact somebody tries to come up with wonky mathematical reasons why this will never work, and the debate about whether it was ever done commercially comes up and falls on its face.

I would personally never go angled, but I don't think of it as taboo punishable by stoning. I guess my point is that tolerating an angled joystick will not turn you to the dark side.

I'm sure anyone could get used to angled sticks. I think the issue comes in at parties and things like that, when a guest jumps on a game, has issues initially with directing the on-screen character, and says "F that, I'm gonna go drink", and they lose interest in the machine.

 I honestly think it messes up the street fighter crowd most of all. (Which is ironic, because most of those angled layouts seem to have 6 button for P3 and P4.) 

The dude who plopped all of $3 into arcade machines over his lifetime would be safe though. The dude who played avidly back in the day would need to reprogram himself a bit.

Honestly if you are drinking at a party and playing on an arcade with a misaligned joystick you won't know and your buddy will tell you that you must really be tore up all the time laughing to himself knowing the truth.

On a side note my brother and I were at my 27th birthday party at Dave and Busters and we were playing some gunner game and I kept silently getting mad at him for not shooting anything and I kept seeing his cross hairs float to the bottom of the screen.  After five minutes I asked him if was going to stop drinking and shoot anything and my brother very politely said it was my cross hairs.  And it was.  True Story.

You can perform surgery with a sword too... but the results arnt going to be pretty.

 Kinda stated... that simplistic games , such as constant walking beatem ups,  may be easier than others... such as fast paced, and or  off/on  directional style games like MK, SF, etc.

 In reality,  angling the sticks doesnt save much space... and even if you use a 45 degree standing corner solution, you can still use vertical alignment of the sticks.  Thats how about 90% of all arcade machines were designed an produced.

Speaking of which, I just went there for the first time with my kids.
all I can say is most of the games there had widescreens, half of them looked like low rez 4:3 games stretched to 16:9.

For me, angled sticks just means there's never a chance for 2 player Smash TV, and that's unacceptable.
