Can I fix this boo-boo (pic inside)
« on: April 17, 2015, 04:59:00 pm »
I got a little carried away with the jigsaw and made the hole bigger than I needed. There's NO way to redo the whole piece so is there a smart way to fix the problem.  This is a IEC plug/port and I tried to look for a bigger one to fill the hole. My next thought was to find some kind of do-it-yourself rubber grommet or something rubber like that I could cut out around the plug in a nice square or rectangular pattern.

Any other ideas how to fix this. It's in the back of the 'cade on the very bottom so it's obviously not noticeable but still...... Would you want your perfect work of art to have this on the back. Me neither if I can help it.

Maybe fill in the void with wood putty or bondo then paint?

Or a metal Face plate cover painted black to cover the area and make the cut out for the plug port in it  :dunno

I would do a faceplate as JDFan mentioned. Buy 3 just in case you need to practice your cutting skills. The "indestructible vinyl" ones cut nicely and don't shatter the way the brittle plastic covers tend to, and I think they are like $.70 each for the blanks. The metal ones are a little more, but if you're going to be painting it anyways might as well save the hassle of cutting metal...

+1 for bfauska's idea, just dont get carried away with that one too...

Either that or bondo/wood filler and re-paint.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to go to my local electronics store and find a wall plate mini.  I had the worst time trying to cut out a hole for the IEC plug. Too small to use a router on.

replace the socket with one of these?

Hey Dude. It's funny you bring that up. I saw one of those but I noticed its rated at 10A.  Is 10A enough for the 'cade?

Without knowing all your equipment that you'll have inside it's hard to say but most of our cabinets should be fine with 10A.

10A @ 120V would be 1200 Watts so would think it'd be more than needed

As the gap is not that big you could also use caulking but get the black caulk and caulk around the whole plug.   Similar to using wood filler or bondo.

+1 for replacing the socket wit a switched socket
your other alternative is to fill it.. but it will not look as good as covering it :)

As for the fuse, mine is running on a 10A fuse, but you can get a 13A version as well.

Mine has:
9 LED buttons, not sure how much ampage is coming off those...
2A TFT
2A audio amp
2A for the Raspberry Pi 2 (might be 2.5A)
0.5A LED strip for the marquee lighting

Note, these are 'max' ratings, they pull as much as they need, up to that amount

its a bartop arcade and so 10A is fine

depends what yours is though, i posted mine in case you also have a bartop

To me, the switch plate would likely look like a band-aid fix. I would either go with the larger switched plug or fill it and sand it and repaint it.

A little JB Weld would fix that right up.
