High Score Competition #163: Tumble Pop

High Score Competition Rules and Scoreboard

--------------------------------
Game Name : Tumble Pop (world)
ROM Name  =     tumblep
--------------------------------

Settings:
   default : Difficulty : Normal
                      Lives : 3

Controls:
    Joystick:      8-way
    2 buttons:   Fire and Jump

Wiki: Tumblepop

Game play :
The game involves one or two ghost-busters who can suck monsters, ghosts, aliens and various other oddball characters into vacuum-cleaner-like devices and spit them back as bouncing/rolling balls. Expelled enemies function as projectiles that can damage and kill other opponents on the screen when colliding with them. The game's looks are reminiscent of Pang. Throughout the game, the player/s can collect letters of the alphabet found in randomly appearing bubbles in order to gradually spell the word "TUMBLEPOP", the progress of which is permanently displayed at the bottom of the screen. When completed, players are transported to a bonus level which gives them the opportunity to obtain higher scores and an extra life, although this level is strictly timed. The word goes back to default after completion.

The player/s has to complete every level within a specific period of time before exceeding an invisible timer. If the players do not manage to eliminate all the monsters in time, a Dracula-like beast appears and approaches them with a sinister laugh. If the beast manages to touch a player before he/she eliminates all the monsters, the player suffers an instant loss of a life. This also counts in the Boss levels.

I never played this before. It kind of looks a lot like Bubble Bobble.

108000 but my machine isn't on the network so getting the screenshot takes a bit of work. I'll transfer one in a couple days if my score holds up.

Hooray! Jasonbar <3 Tumblepop! This earned many a quarter from me.

Think of it as a less weird, less annoying, less confusing, less self-deathy version of Saboten Bombers.

187,600 after a few games. Gotta spell TUMBLEPOP & get the super bonus round w/ the free guy & oodles of points.

Tips:
- You can vacuum bonus items. You don't need to pick them up by having your guy actually touch them.
- The level ends a few seconds after the last guy is killed, even if there are bonus items on-screen. If you've got a screen full of goodies & 1 bad guy left, get the goodies the bad guy.
- The zappy ray gun power up is actually a power down. It kills bad guys instantly, preventing you from getting big combo points & big bonuses. Also, it can't pick up bonus items like the vacuum. Weak sauce.

Thanks,
-Jason

I would recommend starting in Antarctica as it's boss, and the next two following, are very easy compared to the original starting points.

Played some more and figured some more out:

Bonuses/power ups are always in the same spot so once you figure our where letters, coins, diamonds and power ups appear at try to pay attention.

I would get the power up for the vacuum as quickly as possible, if you start your game in Antarctica you can acquire one as quickly as level 1-2 or 1-3.

Getting the weapon upgrade is as mentioned not as good as the normal vacuum but you do get 1k points for it.  I like to wait till the end and acquire it just for the points as it goes away after the current round.

Welcome aboard the more participants the better - be sure to post your scores it's just a friendly competition and having scores posted during the competition gives everyone more incentive to keep trying ( gives you scores around yours that you can try to beat as they also improve their scores so keeps it interesting.) Doesn't need to be a top score to post

Alright I did much better last night. I took Mr Numbers advice and started in Antarctica and finally realized you could hold the button down to suck in multiple sprites...... and I actually was having fun, I played probably 20 games last night.

Just use the 'insert image' button when replying (second button row, first one on the left).

Your link would have worked if you had used square brackets.

Updated the scores for the last time before the competition ends tonight at midnight pacific time. Get your scores in, you've still got several hours to master this game and take a spot on the board.
