I know I can not ask for roms. Fine, I will make a simple plea to the Devs to include the files in a upcoming release. I don't Care about the "Driver" to make these "work" in MAME. Leave that out. and Just say these don't work, if there still worried about legal issues.

But I have Hardware that requires among one thing is a new U53 burnt. I know these were decapped long ago, and the CHD's dumped. IT has moved on to the Nighthawk PC so this is NOT current, heck its 14 years old.
It is right around the time that the Hard drives are failing. and you can not buy upgrades any longer from IT.
GT is not the only files needed. How about Big Buck Hunter from (2000 or 2001)
Or Carnival King....     There all 14 to 15 years old, but none are here (for Preservation)

Funny part is you can but the "replacement" (cloned) drives on Ebay.

Basically I would like to fix my boards. I have exhausted almost every other option But asking here.

I realize its ---smurfy--- of me to post this here, and I am sorry.
And before you blow me up, Yes I have in the past donated to the MAME devs, and I will again.
I also know that a donation is not a bribe to place a rom, CHD, or file in mame.
I know someone will toss that flame out there so I will Squash that.

I know I am not alone in the need for these files.
I hope the Devs can be convinced that this is a needed request.

asking for roms/CHDs to repair your games IS allowed here. What U53 do you need burnt? Have you reached out to Steph at hobbyroms.com ?

MAME Devs don't include any ROMs/CHDs in MAME releases.

Sorry my Spell check must not be working.  :-[

But that is not the point, Some one has to "release" these files and I was always told that the mame devs controlled when "games" were released, as not to upset the owners of the games.
I have read the Guru's dumping website, and it appears these were dumped quite a while ago.   I am using this site as my basis:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~lantra9jp1/gurudumps/decap/index.html

I have 3 boards here at least, that I need A BBH chd (the original) , a U53 for a GT2006 I believe Fore,  and a CHD for a GT2005 Fore.

I have searched several "rom" sites and found mislabeled CHD's to Just plain wrong U53's   Or the best is the GT2004 rom that is actually All of the Boot files from 1.2?? all the way to 2.09 and some other chips on a red board. but No U53. LOL

I am waiting to hear back from Steph, but Honestly I am not holding my breath, these files seem to be made from unobtainium.

if you have the drives (or access to them) you can dump it on your own using CHDMAN , then clone it yourself using the same program.

Worst case, buy the clone drive on eBay then archive a copy.

Well, I was in contact with Steph, at hobbyroms. It is as I feared, he also uses the mame files to burn and copy roms ect..  and as there not included he does not have them.

I was also mistaken, I have the 2006 Hard drive, it's the Security U53 I am missing.

So buying a replacement would actually require buying another board. Kind of silly as I have 3 here already.

u will never find a u53 in public
best u can do is build a hv-programmer
and use fbr16
once u build it send in the 2 files in the .zip
the chip will then be un-locked allowing u to dump it
gt-44-usa-u is the build u want
let me know if u want more, btw chd's the green and or red board will never under-stand

  • it is what it is..."Nobody Said It Was Easy"....
the use of the next file
is done through dos
if u cannot get to true dos
no fear's
grab your self a usb stick.
I will post the formatter u need
in a .zip
then u will want a few other files to un-lock/un-fuse bit the chip
the flash and eep I already up-loaded
to make it easy it took out un-lock-hex and renamed flash.hex
dos like's 8..go fiq
and eep.hex
same thing

now onto the u53 chip
this is unquie to  each build/game/,MOST IMPORTANT SERIAL #

so u53 golden tee will not work for u53 silver-strike or buck-hunter
and so on

be ever so mind full of the jamma interface >it tell's u the green board gen#<

now this file will make a usb stick bootable
in short format stick with it >2meg or less<
once done u reboot with disk in, if all is right it will boot to freedos

I will up-load fbr16 and it's pin-out for 2313

the file contains 2 .cfg's u only need the active 1  fb.cfg

open the file read the screen
type l
it will show u the schematic
follow it

the file's .hex both of them are used to reset the fuse byte's and un-lock the chip
flash.hex is first sent in
then eep.hex
this will un-lock the chip
WITHOUT DAMAGE TO DATA
before u buy/beg a chip
I can post u44-can-u
that is old Canada crap
but the byte change is easy
let me bug it out first.

I WILL NOT GO INTO CURRENT CODE

Thank You very much for the hand holding, it is appreciated.

I will Download the files and get things set up.

But please remember, as I stated in my first post, I have no Chips to extract the code from yet. I am hoping to borrow a friends board that has the proper data.
But I think his is a G44-US-U His is a GT fore 2004.

usage
open jzip >extract<
rufus.exe
click  on rufus
u will get a drop down
follow the prompts
once done, leave usb stick in and reboot your box
it will boot auto to free dos and or give u the opition
u will then load the other files to the same usb stick

Just a quick question or two.
What should the Device ID be for the Atmel chip? (when I select get ID)

And second. Do I load Both Hex files at the same time?

IE load Flash.hex into buffer, and then load EEP.hex into eeprom buffer? All in the same operation? Or load Flash hex, program, then load eep.hex and program again?

It has literally been years sense I have used this DOS program my last 2313, and my rusty is showing.

Alrighty, I made a simple AVR programmer. DB25 powered using the schematic listed in the FB.exe program.

Like this one. http://www.nekhbet.ro/wp-content/progavr1_d.jpg

I was able to find a old g42-us-u chip. IIRC this is a GT2002???
anyways, I connected that to the simple programmer booted to FreeDOS loaded the fb program, loaded the hex files and clicked program.
It went through all of the paces but in the end it said something about a low byte error at 0000
for both flash and eeprom.

I then attempted to read. nothing, still locked. I verified this in my VP-288 (says security bits set)

Do what? Please explain how to do that.
Is there something else I need to build that goes along with that simple programmer?
There is no mention of applying High Voltage to anything in your previous directions....
How high of voltage? What Pin or Pins?

You have my attention. :)

Well, I am on my third computer, thinking My port may not have enough power to drive the fuse bits.
I have tried a P4 box
 a P3 box
and my old AMD quad core.

I could try my old 486 100 DOS programmer box, but that will not boot from a USB so I would have to make a 3.5" disk with the files on it.

and this is what I get every time.

Same error.  ???
I will try another PC again. This was just off my old DOS box so....

Do I need an external 12 Volt power supply on pin 1 of the Atmel?  All of the HV programmers I see have an external power supply to reset the fuse bits.....
But none are the simple one I made so... I wonder if that could be a issue? Not enough power to reset the bits?

yes reset is tied to 12v through a transistor so it can be switched

also
if u have avr studio 3/4/5 u can run this next code through
and change the fuse setting's
I will un-load setting's in a min or 3

I do not have AVR Studio, sorry.

Do you have a Schematic for the 12V line and transistor I need to add?

If things get to much more complex, with this circuit, I may just go buy a HV programmer......
I don't want to fry my Atmels.

I was thinking a circuit like this.

Highlighted in RED

Take the wire off LPT 6 and AVR pin 1 and "splice" this into it.
that way when LPT 6 toggles, it applies 12V to pin 1 of AVR??

u are only using the 12 to un-lock

regular programmer
for me I do it through a stk500
u do not erase chip
if and when I do a run I use
either my emp30 and or qcg-4

I have seen the STK500 Starter Kits. They sell for 86.00. They have 256 of them in stock at a vender I use.

I will attempt to build that boost circuit after I sleep. LOL

I think I have all of the transistors and tidbits here.
I know I have a supply of 7812's
I should have the PNP and NPN Gen purpose transistors...... Not sure there rated for 12 Volts though....

I haven't had any time today, Yet to make that circuit. Buddy of mine had his underground power lines blow apart this AM, so we have been digging and splicing power wires to his garage.
I have all the parts, sitting on my bench, Should take ma a hour or so once I get to it.

Alright. I built the addon power circuit. When power (About 4 volts) is applied to Pin 6 of the LPT port, I get a Nice 12.55 volts at Pin 1 of the AVR socket. (This was done with a battery pack, connected from Ground, and touching pin 6 of the LPT port, and having a meter on Pin 1 of the AVR socket, and ground.)
I have not tested that I am getting power OUT from the Computer on Pin 6 though,,,,,  But I will, I tried just connecting everything and No Joy, Still get that error. And connecting the Atmel to my VP-280 it still says lock bits are set. It will not read the Chip.

I will need to probe a bit deeper on my PC That I have this home built Programmer connected to see if things are triggering like they should.
Not sure How long or "when" the reset should go to 12 Volts.

OK, I just checked the power.
These are checked at the AVR socket
I get 5.13V between pin 20  and Pin 10   (this is the power for the Chip)
I am getting 12.55 between Pin 10 and Pin 1 (I can change with the (M) on Keyboard) so the "toggle" is working. And it is powering it properly. I am going to assume that it IS working "in program" as when I click Program I see my meter change voltage several times during the cycle but it is quick, so no "good" read.

What am I missing?

u need to toggle the rest line
to do it steady voltage u MUST MODIFIY THE .HEX
let me dig out the c++ code, u will need to
fire it into avr studio 6.2 or 5 or 4
and change the -reset timing.
if u are un-sure
I will de-compile for u

If the Issue is just having steady 12 Volts at pin 1, Why not Isolate that pin and feed it direct 12 Volt power? Cant get more steady than that right??

I was always told that the mame devs controlled when "games" were released, as not to upset the owners of the games.

That made me smile.

Well it's true. Go look at any post about when (insert game here) could be added to mame, and you will find in almost every reply, Oh those games are to new, or there still making money, or, the Dev's have had that for a long time but will not release it yet. (And usually someplace in there is the "The Devs don't want to get sued")
I have the real feeling, that the people at "IT" are the ones trying to keep these out. But like I said. Include the files, but not the game driver. that way folks can repair there hardware, and the emulation people can not play it.
Thing is that, there are a lot "newer" games than these already included.
I know I over simplified things, and there is a lot more involved in the decision on what to add.

  • it is what it is..."Nobody Said It Was Easy"....
that is what the mame is based on
yes they have it up to the start screen
but cannot get beyound that stage >game cycle's<
there is a reason and i did go to the reporter to try to explain the problem
but recievd no answer,so i keep it to myself  :dunno
now this in no way will help in the quest u must take to dump u53/u61
because the dump's for mame are just that, and then cannot cross back >serial # is missing<

This is part of the reason that the game will not run:

   ROM_REGION( 0x0880, "atmel", 0 ) /* Atmel 90S2313 AVR internal CPU code */
   ROM_LOAD( "g45-us-u.u53", 0x0000, 0x0880, NO_DUMP )

They have not released the Dumps of the AVR's.

I know it can be done. I am in contact with someone who has dumped some of the files. But as he stated he has no interest in helping me dump files that he uses to make upgrade kits that they sell.
I can totally see where they are coming form. Letting that information on how it is done could cause his sales to plummet, if the person they gave that information to was a bit shady.

  • it is what it is..."Nobody Said It Was Easy"....
that part ment i never recieved an answer back from the posted author..

the no dump part is to mask out the u53 call
or it would serial # out long before the game loading screen

there was a chap claiming they did in fact have these dump's and would burn u a chip
when asked about a copy? of the bin it was the exact same answer..
which is why 4 years ago i went about doing it my-self
and decieded i would share the method
not the .bin but method
thus 1 can do back-up's for them-self's
they just must learn to get there stick's on the ice the at90s2313 is getting harder to get >good ones<
not the cheap china knock off stuff

couple that with the fact some times u need the 24l64
which is like hen's teeth to get in the proper pkg
and u will soon get the drift as to why this is important

now the reason i am sticking to u in this thread
iis to make sure all of the nessary info get's out there
for the mass
these i do in my sleep
but i wrote coustom program's to do the job for me
ie drop in chip hit copy and wait about 3-4 min's wa-la programed chip
and short of handing out the proggie i use
it is easier just to walk through it and build to specific need's
then the 1 i did because of the fact it will do alot more then
at90s2313

small up-date
i went through the avrdudess schmeatic >see attached .jpeg<,
the extra's are for timming, why he made it so complex is beyound me ?
maybe because it is  a win32 proggie ?
and the author had as much of biatch time finding
libusb0.dll as i am.? >needed file<..
i do have the c++ code for it,but this is of no use for the mass..if requsted i will compile >please do not ask<..

in short a few mod's and u have a unlocker based on fpbr
the.exe if u want to call it that.... i have the tear down of it already...
easier just to edit the timming then re-invent the horse.if u catch the drift?...
this can also be done in the .cfg file..u will be working in dos and need to adjust your printer settings as such..
will do a small readme

I have that Schematic.
That is where I took the reset power Idea from.
I do not have the "extra" chips to complete that. Or I would have built it.

well i kinda knew u had it because i googled AVRhvp to find it..
but if u build that circuit u will need his s/w
and it dose not inculde a file libusbo.dll
it dose inculde the c++ code for it
but then u will be compiling in c++

  • it is what it is..."Nobody Said It Was Easy"....
and here is why

Note  WinUSB functions require Windows XP or later. You can use these functions in your C/C++ application to communicate with your USB device. Microsoft does not provide a managed API for WinUSB.

microsoft never let it out as a packaged file,it is olny c++ code

hi
i found a few of our flaws in fbr
on newer mobo's the port will not pull up-to 5volt's
and the reset sit's at a steady 3.3vdc
neither of these are of use to us
so let's build the complete power supply part of avrdudess
(the +5/+12 and the 2 transistor stage on the reset line),
this will put these problems to bed
i will be testing shortley

ok i was right
in the fbr
open the 3 resistor's that make up the 5v and feed 5v through a dc supply (stable 5v)
the spec of the parrel port states never tie (newer systems olny) 2,3,4,5,6,7,,8,9 toghter
through a resister or not,it is very bad..
reffernce here
>http://www.circlemud.org/jelson/software/parapin/docs/node6.html<
so to get around this we use a seperate 5v supply

I am running this off a OLD DOS 486 - 100 PC

I have checked the voltages several times. The Main Chip power 2-3-4-9 Through the resistors I get a Solid 5.13 volts. It never fluctuates. (Had meter on it through the test)
The reset line I have 12.55 Volts Switchable Via the M toggle on the Keyboard.

yep my old unit will do it that way to.
but we lose the pulse on the reset line "it hold's" steady at 12.  which we do not want
on newer board's it will bounce.
but the pull-up's will not get there 5volt for the 5v to pin 20 of the avr they olny climb to 3.3 volt
so i did a hybrd >based on part of what u posted < and refering back to the main schmeatic
of it
with a tweak here and there we are in full test mode >fbr.bat< tweak

q for u
do me a fav with your old box and fbr id the device olny, as i want to do a compare.

I am using the G42-US-U as my test.
And I get a Device code of 00 01 02 03
IIRC.
I thought it was odd because the AVR should reply with 0x 1e 91 01
But then I read that if the fuse bits are locked you will not get the proper reply???
So I am unsure what is correct.

If I put in a Un program Atmel I do get the proper Device ID. Even one that IS programed but UNLOCKED I get a valid ID. Its only a locked chip that spits out the wrong one.

ok before my break i have alot done
built the 12v to reset circuit..work's like a charm
in current low mode 12v is placed on the reset pin
in current high mode 3.3 volt's is placed there
this is what we want,
next i am going to poke a few extra data line's
i will explain why later
but this next statment may help u

I apologize for not posting sooner, work has me "involved" the last couple days. I will take a look at your programs tonight when I get back.

hi
i took the day off..trust me i needed it....
let me know whem u are ready
i am just touching up the coustom file now...
here is the mickey lib0usb is olny a .dll
there is no excuteable buy order of microsoft
reason is easy
it dose not lend its-self well for transfer from machine to machine
on machine (a) it is perfect on machine (b) the port's just went side way's
reason is libousb,so microsoft did not want it compiled as such..
but u can stuff it into a dos .bat file and or .cfg
:):):):)  catch the :):):)
as long as it ran :off-board: and not as a :INSTALLER:
that is the word right from microsoft, and it was all i needed
i will place in a small readme  >easy 1< so u can do your own edit's to the file

Thank you Much. :) I should be getting the Chips in a day or 2. then I need to Build the Programmer. I think I will just breadboard this one. It is a lot easier than making a hard circuit.

i do however have a idea
u c when we work in dos
we cannot get to c:\ root of our hard drive
libu0usb is to tell the dos proggie to look for a open usb port-'s
so we can save our work and move it back and fourth.
We must remeber that this proggie was writen pre  xp/dos on a stick etc
so it would normally not inculde these type of file's/driver's/root-path's.
best reason i can come up with

What program will not allow access to c:? all of the DOS type programs I run default to c:\ as the save directory...... Or in the very least allow me to make the directory change when choosing the save to or save as function...

Unless your talking about the "internal" workings of the program itself...

Very cool indeed.
I use Partition wizard, HDAT2, CHDMAN, WinHex, ect... Whatever I need at the time I guess.
CHDMAN usually works fine for everything.

ok ppl
as we have been chatting in the back ground about this
i did agree to let u have the compiled code
this is for 2313 tiny and 2313 dip
there is a hudge dif..let the script do the work
This main script >shell< was written in c++ and compiled by dexter, there is a d/l attached.
i will post u on some example's and what they mean..
u will need to tweak it to go lpt1,and or rs232 for stk500 user's
i will show u the edit's and save point's
this engine is "4.6" ,  "5" is a load better as u can in script spec what type of port u  want and save a few lines of code

  • it is what it is..."Nobody Said It Was Easy"....
now just to answer your question
what is the button's in there for ?
it is to drive the port the way u need it
ie: rs232 and or paralla
ie:tiny2313 and or full dip
ie hvpp or just isp,if u do not know isp? do not tinker, there is enough info on atmel site about that interface.
this will point exp to the port and type of chip for fuse's and lock's

Ed,

I am trying to follow along here, did you guys ever get this to work?
I have some boards that are missing U53 and would like to get them working.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Edward Downey of London, Ontario passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2018 after a valiant health battle at the age of 60.

I'm sure he was our ed12 based on his name, city, age, and date of passing.

Well been reading over and over on this post. Got most of the tools he used but would like others to jump in a help. Just feel like we have to continue what he left behind.  :)

Forgot to add my current setup I'm using right now is AVR Studio 4.19 with the STK500 board running it on windows xp. Just like in the past post testing on a new old stock AT90S2313 chip ID matches up. So i know that works right. But the test chip comes back not matching because of the fuse lock. So the STK500 will create the 12v to reset pin but I feel like Im missing something either in the software setting or a jumper on the stk500 board. I wired it just like the manual said to do. Just did not want to build a programmer not knowing for sure it would work right. He said in the past the stk500 was the board to use for this type of thing. I will keep at it for sure. Should have more chips in to test soon.  :banghead:

Still working on it. Finally got the 2006 chip to test on. So far I build a few serial isp dongles. Waiting on another target board to try. He said you can use the STK500 but not sure if im missing an adapter card or something to use the isp 6pin connector from the dongle to the stk500. The stk500 has a built in isp so not sure how he did it. I have a stk300 coming in and I think that will fix my issue talking with the chip they way it needs to. Avr studio sees the chip id. But I see now the main focus is the reset timing pulse on 12+. So the older programming software is the way to go to control that part better for me. The last resort would to be making a target board with LPT port with separate voltage feeds for 5v and 12v since every computer is different. Also I do have a desktop pc that has a 3.5 disk drive I will try FB running from that. So I will try every way I can with what I got. This is why I don't throw away old pc's.  :lol
