got my pi - small issue with xbox 360 controller

loving my pi, all set up and playing games with a 360 pad.  cool little machine for on the go play.

but i can't for the life of me figure out how to use the thumbstick as a directional pad in some of the older systems (nes, genesis, etc.).

anyone been able to figure this out?
