Daytona USA artwork
« on: February 18, 2015, 06:54:05 am »
Any artwork Ideas for Daytona USA cabaret I'm building? It doesn't have to be exactly like an original Daytona USA cab. possibly some modern artwork.
I would like to vinyl the all the sides instead of painting

This is all I have so far. I'm not very good at putting artwork together.
The only high res stuff I have is the original Daytona USA side art.

I like it. Art is also not my strong suit. Have you considered talking with Opt or Malenko?

More drafts. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and constructive criticism is also welcomed. I don't have an eye for this kind of stuff.

I like the idea of this one but I couldn't make it look right

For some reason I like this one too, but I couldn't get the right look with it also

I like this one too. But I have a hard time imagining what it would look in real life.
Maybe it needs a small row at the bottom with racing decals. I'm all for simple and plain but it is a Daytona USA cab, which is a Nascar based game. I envisioned it to have more of a race car feel to it. That's why I did the ones with the car front end on the sides.I just couldn't make them look right.
Hell I don't know! That's why I asked your opinions.

THe good thing about the bottom one would be that it would be much cheaper to Paint it and just print the Daytona USA portion.

If you really want to make it look good you could add some of Yotsuya's favorite Chrome Diamond Plate  :laugh2:

Ahh - Thought it was you that was complaining about it being used !

Here's another attempt at the sides - stayed close to what Yotsuya had put up but lowered the Daytona patch a bit and made it more to scale with your dimensions to ensure it was a high enough detail for the artwork to not get distorted when enlarging (actually downsizing from the original)

Left side looks good, right side the spacing (left to right) of the logo is all dicked up.

Work in progress DUSA marquee.  Need to tweak the half tone coloring on the blue bit a smidge (the arcade version didn't have the "Race Leader" text but I like it) and last thing I need to do it tackle the cars but I'm still working on reference art to build that image out right.

So I did some digging and found SUTempest on Deviant.  Several years ago he worked on a D-USA project and produced all the cars - as in all the cars in the Daytona USA universe between 1 & 2.

I'll send him a shout to let him know I'm using his stuff but I'm going to build out the car queue from scratch using his imagery as it's way better than anything else out there.  I'll try and have it done this next weekend.  I'll be using the top right image (naturally) tho I bet there is some great custom stuff that could be one with the other images as well.

Nice find Chuck. One thing I can say about you is you swing for the fences. That would be a grand slam though.Well only for Daytona USA fans. What's weird is you found 3D art of all the cars, but we can't even find a low resolution copy of the marquee anywhere.

These aren't really the cars.  These are skins for another game, the cars are not quite the correct body kits.  It was a huge todo for a number of years.  I've got all the models downloaded, now I need to download a viewer and see what I can pull apart to make use of.  The images on Deviant are all examples and lowres - no good for what we're trying to do.  If I can't get that going I'll hit up the artists but most of them have moved onto other projects and Tempest isn't even on Deviant anymore.

Holy crap this is confusing.  I guess if I had been playing nr2003 this wouldn't be so difficult.  Am finally able to extract the skins from the .car files.  Now I need to find the Dennis Rioux Cup90 Carviewer mod files so I can get these modeled properly (right vehicle frame).  God amighty what a PITA.

I wasn't bitching to illicit a payment man, just bitching because it's way harder than it should be.  I probably could clean up the images I have faster than what this is taking me but I think this will have better results.  The original art uses what I'm sure are model lifts right from the game.  The marquee is kind of an odd mix of halftone areas, solid tones, blended gradients and then polygon skins for the cars.

I'm not 100% certain I'll get it to work but it's worth a shot.  Besides, I'm not doing this just for you, I've got a dog in this fight too as I'm splitting my drivers up and want to get a marquee that looks good for them.

Alright alright alright, beat it up.  Hazing gradient not enough (atmospheric perspective), too much, curve unattractive, car stacking not good, car perspective not good, vanishing point confusing?  I can adjust the curve, shorten the pack a bit and probably increase car size for all by about 10%.  Just a thought.

Some of the cars are from Daytona 2.  That said, I really like the models I was able to get, but the body types are different from the originals and those Sega models were not as foreshortened as these so there is less windshield - which is also dark rather than light in color.  All the same they're really crisp and I'm pleased.

<edit>

Version 2

Here is some reference art that Jaharr01 dug up for me, can't seem to find this stuff on the webz anywhere.  Acknowledge that I'm not 100% but I think I've got a reasonable approximation going here.

Okay, taking another look at that I adjusted the gradient on the background to reduce the orange banding and get a faster transition from the pink to yellow.  Last version tonight.  I'm getting a bit loopy.

Is the Daytona logo stretched horizontally?  Looks fatter than in the pic.  ACK, need to stop!

Ok here is my take, mind you I am a complete rookie when it comes to critiquing artwork. First off the detail on the cars looks outstanding. When you zoom you can see those fine details, like the hood pins and the mesh of the grill, like on the Hornet car.Looking at your topper it looks like the cars are coming out of turn 4 lined up in tight formation. Yours, it looks like the curve is not exactly right. But that is depending on what you were trying to do.The ass of the cars looks down too much,it looks like cars need to be tilted forward a bit. The Daytona looks okay to me though.

I'm going to drop a photo of my double set marquee into the image and then layer the vehicles ontop of it as a template and see if I can get that turn to look cleaner.  I can't manipulate the cars as 3D images in photoshop (well I could but I didn't input them that way... and it would be huge) so I might have to rescreenshot the entire pack at a new angle - thankfully I have all the skins saved in a way that makes it easy to rotate through them on the frames.  As the car models are different than what is shown in the original it's hard to find the correct angle; however, when I overlay the original art I'll figure out if the camera needs to rotate higher in the sky a bit.  Might need to see just a bit more of each roof panel.

On your search for artwork you didn't happen to come across anything for the sit down cabinet sides?
