When I bought my Raspberry Pi (1st version) I also ordered an SD card with the Raspbian OS pre-installed.  Can you do something similar for the Pi 2?

edited to add: Looks like you can!.  Only 10 bucks, too.

All you need to know is here:
http://elinux.org/RPi_Easy_SD_Card_Setup

I would start with NOOBS, if your not just going to use it for gaming.
http://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/

Also see below for one of many easy ways to install the OS other then NOOBS with out command line.  I use a Mac but there are Windows and Linux programs that do the same.
http://www.tweaking4all.com/hardware/raspberry-pi/macosx-apple-pi-baker/

Piplay is an OS for retro gaming for the PI, and yes there are others (see above) this is just one I kind of like that you could try. The good news is it's easy to try lots of OS's.

I have used pimame and it's a solid product that is always getting worked on.  PiPlay has all the emulators for pi working out of the box I highly recommend it.

http://blog.sheasilverman.com/pimame-raspberry-pi-os-download/

Now here's what I do with my pi,  I use it for several different functions at different times.  Just buy another sd card for 5 bucks and you can have all sorts of different things ready to boot and try until you find your personal favorite.

Mine arrived 2 days ago. I ordered it from adafruit. I was literally refreshing the browser when I bought it last week and watching the inventory drop quickly.

I plan on making a final burn alpha "console" using the Retropie image.

Just buy a compatible card locally. Refer to this: http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards

Need to pick up a card and get a head start on the programming.

I saw the release of the Pi2 late, so I didn't get in on it.  I've wanted a Pi for awhile now and while searching for what people were doing with the new version, I came across this;

Although I'm not the biggest fan of some of Ben Heck's hacks, I thought I could pull something like this off.  I purchased a Pi a and two 2.8" displays from Adafruit plus a few other bits and pieces.  While waiting for my shipment I see this;

https://learn.adafruit.com/pigrrl-raspberry-pi-gameboy/overview

So I guess I'll be ordering some more parts soon.

Tonight I printed this and did a quick test run of the parts I've bought.

Regards,
Scam

Edit: So I just ordered my Pi2 from MCM, Thanks for the link DaOld Man!

I was a PiPlay kickstarter backer. Below is Shea's email to donors about compatibility.

Quote
Hey All!
Last week the Raspberry Pi Foundation released the newest Raspberry Pi board, the Pi2.
Upgrades include:
a Quad Core ARMv7 processor running at 900mhz.
1GB RAM
Backwards compatibility with the original Pi (ARMv6)
I received mine on Saturday, and have been testing PiPlay on it.  It's so fast.  The bad news is that one or two of the emulators are acting weird.  I'm looking into it, and I hope to have it fixed soon.
Mark, myself, and the rest of the contributors have been working hard on the next release of the software as well.  Included is a better web frontend, more themes, more optimizations, and now the ability to favorite your games.

Enjoy!
Thanks for backing!

Test image for retropie (includes emulation station) on raspberry pi 2. I haven't tried it yet. Waiting for a few more pi related goodies in mail.

Yeah, I understood that.  I ordered and received my Pi model A before seeing the PiGRRL 3d printed case.  The Pi2 I ordered won't fit in this case either.  The files on Thingiverse also contain the 123D files so that the case can be edited. I just printed the case to see how sturdy it was and how the screen would fit.  All in all I'm pretty impressed with how it turned out.  When I receive my new parts, I'll start thinking seriously about redesigning the case as I'm not too crazy about how the jacks stick out beyond the case sides.  It will make for a slightly larger case, but I think it'll look better.  BTW I printed this on my Printrbot Simple metal and it just fit along the X axis.  I may be thinking about an upgrade to the printer as well.

The Pi 2 may fit with minimum adjustment as it looks like they used a model B v2 on the game girl.

The A+ is more efficient but has 25% (256) of the ram as the model B+ you ordered (1GB) I would do some testing to see if you can live with the lower ram with the games you want.

BTW, did you order an old model A from some reseller that had them in stock or did you mean an A+?

Can an original xbox play any PS1 games? the old Pi model B kind of sorptive could if you over clocked it. The thing with the Pi platform is the community keeps finding new ways to squeeze more performance out of it.

Locke141: I have a Model A+ 256 MB Raspberry PI.  So far I've only tried Nes Emulation on Super Mario Bros. 3.  It seems to work ok, I have yet to try any MAME Roms yet.  I've managed to break the USB Port on the thing so I ordered a port along with a few more goodies from Adafruit. This is going to be a fun project.

DaOld Man: No one is more impressed than myself.  I just assembled the thing, a Printrbot Simple Metal.  I think I made a good choice in a 3D printer.  My design skills aren't too great, but I am learning.  The prints I've done, including the GameBoy replica can be found on Thingiverse.  I just download them and tell the printer to spit 'em out.  The only print I designed myself was a knob for my drill press, there's a pic of it on these forums somewhere.  The prints for the GameBoy took somewhere between six to eight hours, I didn't sit and watch.  It's kinda like that Ron Popeil oven just set and forget.  Perhaps I'll make a video, but it'll have to be something small and pertaining to our BYOAC interests.  If you have any ideas, let me know.

I got my printer here;

http://printrbot.com/shop/simple-metal-kit/

It says from $539.  As I recall it was 625 to my door with full roll of PLA.

I think if I were to do it all over again, I'd buy this for the speed and larger build volume.

Good to know.

I had XBMC running on an old XBOX years ago. In fact it was my first MAME experience. Is that still an XBOX running on turtle box pick on the UCA thread? The one with D&D Sky's over Mystara?  I'v been thinking about doing an XBOX build this summer.  Is CoinOPS the way to go these days?

Edit: The B+ looks faster on paper.

XBOX
  • CPU: 733 MHz Custom Intel Pentium III "Coppermine-based" processor
  • Memory: 64 MB of DDR SDRAM @ 200 MHz
  • Graphics: 233 MHz Nvidia NV2A
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_(console)

Raspberry Pi 2 Model B
  • CPU: 900 MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7
  • Memory: 1GB RAM (shared with GPU)
  • Graphics: 250 MHz Broadcom VideoCore IV
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi

Seeing how Nvidia has a reputations for not being very open with there hard ware and how the Broadcom VideoCore IV is probably the most open video core there is. I think the R-pi community will be able to get the most out of it.

That said I still want to try CoinOPS. It looks like the got a lot out of the old girl.

Mine is attached to the back of my monitor and has seen practically no use what so ever.

Linux is practically dead now, since we have android (yeah I know) as the winboxes are as small as a seven inch tablet.

BTW did I tell you about my HP Stream 7 and how........... :blah:    :lol

Time to toss my hat into the Pi ring.  Just picked up a B model for $20.  I'm a bit confused though, I kept hearing how poor the performance in the GUI was.  I've used it all day, browsing the net, playing movies, music, even did some spreadsheet stuff and I'm pretty impressed with it so far.  Way better performance than I was expecting.

It would be nice to see a comparison to coinops too.  God knows it'll be more quite than an xbox.

Xbox has many advantages but there are many, many new games that are cabinet friendly that I would like to add to the rotation.  A shame that newer consoles have never been so throughly hacked.

You could always get a cheep PC off Arrow.

Linux is practically dead now, since we have android (yeah I know)

Android uses the linux kernel.

Thats right, Android is just as "linux" as Ubuntu. If you add up all linux distributions it's the number one operating system in the world. I don't care for Android my self. IOS always seem to be faster on similar hardware. My limited understanding is because Android runs every thing in a Java like machine that aid in compatibility. IOS and the chips it runs on are super customized to run fast with each other. Also out side of there custom linux Kernel (many distros custom the Kernel) that Google has to release under the GPL, Android is not very open at all that would be the one thing I would be interested in.

Xbox has many advantages but there are many, many new games that are cabinet friendly that I would like to add to the rotation.  A shame that newer consoles have never been so throughly hacked.

Thats because Raspbian uses super light/fast LXDE as a GUI. Linux is modular so it easy'ish to change the GUI if you like it you should try lubunu (Ubuntu with LXDE) on that laptop your using to try linux, it should make a speed difference. The Raspbian make it less pretty by default (its geared for kids) but lubunu looks better by default.

Thanks guys.
I find this very interesting.
Need to pick up a card and get a head start on the programming.
About the piplay: Is there a frontend with it? Something like mala?

Mine should be in this week.

Wah!cade should run on the new one.
I installed it on my rpi b no problems but it ran too slow to be of any use.

I would love to see a report of future pinball running under wine on a pi 2.  I'm thinking of picking one up to make a small stand alone pinball machine.

Linux is practically dead now, since we have android (yeah I know)

Android uses the linux kernel.

Thus the "yeah I know".  ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- do I have spell everything to you guys, or are we that stupid?   :laugh2:

You can probably fix that. Do you have a soldering iron?
