Laser cut frames, custom joystick balltops, 3D printed designs
« on: January 30, 2015, 10:15:02 pm »
Cuddleburrito is a digital design firm specializing in 3D printed and laser cut arcade products. We turn your ideas into reality. Here's a custom joystick we made:

GameThing, our latest product, is a fully customizable arcade stick built with open-source electronics. The online customizer let's you choose button layouts and colors to preview exactly what we'll build for you completely free and right now. In fact, we've connected our website directly to the manufacturing floor; you are only one step away from having a laser cut frame made exactly to your specifications.

Start customizing now

Hi Everyone,

http://www.cuddleburrito.com/gamething/

I custom design and laser cut arcade controllers, parts, and mini-cabs. Everything is designed in CAD first (Solidworks/Sketchup/Blender whatever is easiest for the job), then I export and create the remaining graphics in Illustrator for the laser cutter. For most designs we use 1/4" MDF and 1/8" and 1/4" Acrylic but more options are available. Please ask, we'll find a solution for you.

This is the standard stick with MDF frame and Acrylic sides and top. It's dimensions are 9.75 x 7x 2.75-inch but it's design is completely parametric (length, width, surface angle, button layout). We laser cut each order individually to your requirements. Inked engravings look fantastic on this acrylic as well.

It's based off a tiny frame I've developed over many iterations that splits into 2 halves for easy access to the parts:

Moreover, we can design and make any 3D shape for custom joystick ball tops (see below) or replacement pieces such as this Donkey Kong joystick balltop for a custom 12-inch LCD build.

Let us know how we can help, email us, use our website, PM; we're more than happy to help you design what you're looking for!

:notworthy: that DK barrel balltop looks great!!!

Would you be able to make it for a standard balltop?

Thank you! Yup, I sourced the threaded insert for standard stick threads (don't have it next to me but I believe it's 6mm for Sanwas) but can get you any thread if you have something different.

Is that 3D printed?

The joystick balltops are 3D printed in ABS plastic. I create the 3D models myself which allows me to design them optimally for 3D printing. A brass insert provides a secure and standard mount to the joystick.

I'll be posting new designs here:
http://www.cuddleburrito.com/joysticks

Thanks for asking, otsep.

What's the ergonomics on those like? They look cool, but how will they feel in your hand after prolonged play?

I actually placed and received my order already. Once I saw the barrel I had to have it on my cabaret arcade. Florian was quick to respond my PMs. Absolutely love this thing!
Here's some pics.

Haven't really gave it a good gaming session since I just got it yesterday. But it's definitely bigger than a balltop. I'll take better pics when I get home tonight.

Could you do a barrel like this?

Instead of the rough edges being exposed, maybe some sort of clear coat so that all of the edges were smooth?  Kinda like the fly in amber.  The top and bottom could be flat and rough, but the sides have to be smooth.

I've got a few ideas on how to accomplish this, give me a few days to try them out and I'll post back here :)

Sorry long day at work yesterday. Took some more pics to show the actual size of the barrel. As you can see in comparison with a quarter    and a standard balltop. It does take some getting used to as it's much bigger. Also I was a bit concerned with it breaking during heavy play but it took a beating with my 5 year old twin boys and it's still standing. Besides Florian assured me that he's never had one break on him.

@ Generic Eric
The texture is smooth and won't do that but you definitely feel the barrels grooves. The detail is really top notch along with the paint job.

(Sorry for the edit, I wanted to be as accurate as possible).

so...would you say it needs another poly layer like I suggested?  Our is it smooth enough to get to the kill screen?

Don't think you need another coat of poly layer. It's smooth enough.
Love the DK symbol idea but I think it might be better on the top of the barrel.

Thanks a ton for all the feedback and questions. I meant to only take a few days but I ended up making a lot of mistakes and learning a lot about casting (each time having to wait 24-72 hours for curing). A lot of feedback was to make it smooth so I took a different approach than before that I thought would address most concerns: embed 3D prints inside a clear resin sphere. I intend to write a blog post about the process but here's how far I've gotten:

I'm by no way complete, so many improvements remain (eliminate flashing, remove bubbles, make barrel less distorted, etc) but I wanted to show you my progress anyway. Thank you sooooooo so much for all your support already. My main hurdle right now is purchasing a vacuum chamber to degas the resin and silicone.

Just spit-balling here.. I like the idea of putting the barrel in a ball. But, would it make any sense to distort the barrel to compensate for the lensing of the clear sphere so it would look like a undistorted barrel inside the sphere?

Thank you everyone for the feedback and support! Since the last post I've been minimizing bubbles, preventing yellowing, and casting with the threaded inserts inside:

Pre-distorting to compensate for the sphere lens is really interesting. In the case of the barrel, I think the distortion is pronounced because the barrel is so close to the edge (~3mm). I wanted to preserve as much detail in the 3D print as possible by making it as large as possible, so next I'll try something smaller.

I've made a list of your suggestions and I can't wait to try some of them out. I need to wait for more resin to arrive but in the meantime I can 3D print the embedments. PM me if you'd like to be contacted the moment you can place your order

I've documented some of my progress so far on my blog. You can read about the process if you're curious:

I purchased a vacuum chamber and still waiting on the resin to arrive.
