Pretty sure you can set up a modded Wii to boot straight into USB loader GX, which you can control with a GameCube controller, but I haven't tried it.

Yeah I believe that is possible.

I've got a modded Wii hooked up to a CRT I picked up about a month ago. I was thinking about throwing some emulators on there for other systems. I also have an original XBOX connected that I'm planning to softmod. Which would be better for that? I'm mostly looking for high compatibility and performance. I know XBOX has a good reputation for emulating other systems, but I was thinking the Wii might be more powerful overall.

Not really going to get much simpler to set up than an original Xbox using USB encoders programmed with the Kade firmware.  If you don't mind guests knowing that you're running a ghetto ass old Wii and waving Wiimotes around in 2019 then I guess that's okay, too.

I did some comparison photos of original hardware to CoinOps here...

Using the Wiimote to navigate around is a bit of a pain. Seem like it take a minute to figure out where the controller is relative to the sensor bar so that you can figure out where the little hand is going to show up on the TV screen. LOL! Other than that, it's not a total deal-breaker.

Looks like CoinOps had the worst visuals for the NES emulator in your comparison?

Yep.  I mean, they all looked fine in isolation but definitely the worst when compared side by side.

I am planning on hacking the XBOX regardless and do have a full install of CoinOps for it. I'll give that a go and see how it turns out. The NES palette is tricky to recreate because apparently the colors don't use standard RGB values. If the color is a little off, it's probably not the end of the world. As far as performance goes, what is the latest generation of console you can emulate and still have good performance? Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, etc?

Again, I don't know if I'm speaking a foreign language or something but you don't have to use the wiimote for navigation.  The analog stick on a classic controller works just fine.

The Mega SD just had a firmware update adding support for the Genesis version of Virtua Racing, making the Mega SD the only flash cart to support that game.

I still haven't ordered one, but my resistance is dwindling, especially as early reports are extremely positive, at least from what I've read.

To remind myself how little I need to spend money on a new flash cart, I've been playing some Sega CD through emulation. I gotta say, Snatcher is overrated.

I love the cart but I just cant justify the price as I already have a X5 and a full holy trinity.

If I didn’t though I would totally buy this lol

Pre-orders for a new Atari Jaguar flash cart are currently open. This company also makes a flash cart for the Neo Geo Pocket console, although it doesn't look like they have them for sale at this time.

LOL! Yeah, I was wondering if there were actually enough good games on the Jaguar to warrant buying something like that. From what I've read, this SD cart can actually run CD games as well as the cartridge-based ones. Maybe that makes it more valuable? I know those CD units are going for ridiculous prices on eBay right now...

I don't remember the Jaguar having any games worth playing.  Never owned one, but I was interested in it back in the day.

If I recall correctly, the problem with that system was they put a Motorola 68000 in it as a co-processor to enable easy ports from Genesis versions of games.  So you basically just got lazy ports of the worst versions of shovelware.  And I guess a few Amiga games.

It also had some screwy cartridge slot and the slightest tug on the controller would lock up your game.  Alien vs Predator was a crummy reskin of Wolfenstein and I swear people only praised it because nobody could call ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- on it being a piece of crap.  I had a copy of it that would go absolutely nuts with loud screeching ~20 minutes into it and to this day I have no idea if that's part of the game or if I owned a bad copy, because I quit playing precisely 2 minutes after that started up.

Anyway, I bought one as a novelty summer 2000.  Games ran me like $5 shipped for sealed copies.  It lasted about a month or two before I dumped it all on Ebay.  Tempest 2000 was alright but it's been redone a million times and better since.  Google says there were more releases than I remember but I had a shitload of them.

I still love Tempest 2000 on the Jag. I've only played it emulated, though.

I still think Tempest 2000 is better than all the sequels and the Jag version (emulated) is the best. The combination of the synth music and particle effects on the Jaguar is amazing and, unlike the sequels, does not distract from the action. The Playstation port is pretty excellent, as well.

I got to see the CPS2 multirom thing and the Sega Saturn ODE at the Houston show. I wish they were a little  flashier but still pretty cool.

GameCube features the worst versions of Nintendo franchises. Pass.

A gamecube to sd card adapter can be bought for 2-7$ and you can boot into homebrew to play backups with any number of game discs.  If you want to get away from using the disc to boot there are modchips that override the ipl and allow direct booting to the sd card.  There's literally no reason that I can think of for such a device to exist.

Yep,

It seems that a lot of this SD/CD rom drive replacement stuff was a bight thing for people like us. But now it all seems parity cheep.

I literally not aloud to work for the next few weeks, do to the surgery, but will be modding a will and a few other items over the next few weeks. Dances items like DDR, wii, and other PE stuff for my school cafeteria are going to be a goal.

The main reason is compatibility.

Although many games will boot and run ok from the SD adapter many wont.
They dont stream audio 100%.

The latest version of swiss has improved significantly though still not perfect.

Also if your CD drive fails there is a shortage of the chips that will enable you to boot straight from the SD.

So they are actually pretty use-full :)

I get what you are saying, but the gc disc drive is pretty darn reliable.  By the time we have to worry about it wearing out I figure swiss will have progressed to the point to where it won't be needed.

btw pbj, I mentioned gc homebrew methods instead of the wii since, if I hadn't, someone would have brought up the Gameboy player and I'd have to type all of this anyway.  If the hdmi solutions come down just a bit more I'm going to pickup a player and softmod my gc just for it.

I have fond memories of the Gamecube but when I look through the game list it is pretty weak.  My fondness must just be due to the fact that my kids played a ton of Gamecube.

Star Wars Rogue Squadron II was one of my favorites. I still play it as a matter of fact.

Being able to fight as Link in Soul Caliber II was pretty cool.

Nah multi-platform games sucked on the cube because of that stupid controller.  Smash players be damned, the gc gamepad is ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- for anything but first party Nintendo titles and even some of them (I'm looking at you Metroid Prime) didn't play well with it.

And the ones that are still tight fetch crazy money most of the time!

Yeah yeah, some people didn’t like the controller. I didn’t mind it.

But before modern consoles, the Wavebird was the greatest wireless controller on the market.

So the GC did something right.
