The GameCube library is really unimpressive overall, but it's similar to the N64 in that a few exclusives make keeping a small selection of titles worth it, especially if you never bought a WiiU. However, the Wii is better than the GameCube in every way, including being a GameCube. If you mod your Wii, you can even enable GBA connectivity to play Pac-Man Vs. or have somebody ruin your session of Wind Waker with the Tingle Tuner or play 4 Swords, if you have a lot of GBA's and friends that like bad Zelda games. Basically, with a Wii as a GameCube, you lose the little used system link and the GBA player addon, but then to have a good time playing GBA you have to get a controller that actually controls GBA decently and those controllers are crazy expensive.

You gain so much by using the Wii as a GameCube that there is basically no reason to own a GameCube any more.

But before modern consoles, the Wavebird was the greatest wireless controller on the market.
Ahem...

Umm... no. The wave bird was first party and had the analog sticks in the proper position.  It even fixed a lot of the wired gamecube controller's layout issues by putting a flat surface for the dpad mount instead of those weird islands.  It was the best wireless controller until the next generation.

I only heard good things about Wavebird but I was still sitting five feet from a CRT back then, so I had no need for it.

I got one as soon as they came out.  I generally preferred it over the standard controller.... the only downside was the lack of rumble.

As someone who prefers Xbox controllers over the Dual Shock controllers, I at least agree with that part.

Permanently modify your board versus replace a watch battery every 10 years?

 :lol

Good point. I have the cart that does memory and ram. That seems like the best solution.

Yeah and add at least another 50 to get it to output hdmi… or you know, just buy a wii for 10 bucks and one of those $3 hdmi adapters.

Yep, I have a wii all setup on a CRT and would not mind adding a mod to my original game cube.

I think the ODE is meant for people who collect consoles that want to a) still fire up the console occasionally, b) prevent wear and tear on the optical drive, and c) want a solution that bypasses having to use the Action Replay disk every time. For $80, it's not too painful. If you just want to play GC games, a hacked Wii is definitely the way to go...

That wasn't my point.  My point was the cost is actually $130 minimum because you'll need a hdmi adapter.  It'd be more reasonable at half the price.

Why would you need a HDMI adapter?

Because the best a gamecube can do without one is s-video.  PAL regions can do rgb, but even that forces the cube to output 480i instead of 480p

Been some big updates to swiss recently that allows use of the bottom SP2 port with a microSD (up to 2tb I think).

I ordered the little board from here.   https://www.ebay.com/itm/SD2SP2-microSD-Card-Adapter-for-GameCube-Serial-Port-2/264500455936?hash=item3d9574aa00:g:MuMAAOSwJt9dptk7

And you can download and follow swiss development here.   https://github.com/emukidid/swiss-gc/releases

Slick set up for the money.

good day.

You still need to use the Action Replay disk with this right? You basically just lose the SD card adapter that goes in the memory card slot with this new adapter?

I think the only point of it is so both memory card slots are free.  It's cool but imho completely unnecessary as most people are going to have one slot free anyway.  It'd also be a pain in the butt if you have a Gameboy player as you'd have to take it off every time you want to alter the sd card.

I still need to up date likes, and will soon, but here is the DC I modded for my brother.

It now has a better power supply, SD card replacement for the DVD drive, a 3D printed drive mount, and a external scaler to HDMI. The power cord it needs has been ordered from Amazon, and I’m hoping to test soon. This was a non working DC so hoping the power fixed it.

I believe its meant to make it the equivilent of a 4x cd read speed where the original was a 1x.

So not instant like a cart but defo faster!!

As for the cost I dunno what they are going for now but I reckon the price might be about to rise....

Just seen someone buy a pre-mod’d NGCD for 500 :o

Ohh also forgot to mention about the GC loader!

There is now (has been a while forgot to update!) A GC loader plug and play!

No more soldering required just plugs straight in :)

Mine came the other day and its excellent!

Runs swiss straight from the SD card and any games you put on it.

Unfortunately Swiss currently write any data to the SD card BUT if you have one of the little boards mentioned above it can write data to that.

Really well! No issues at all thus far.

For the PNP piece of cake!

Literally just strip the unit down (they even sent me a gamebit driver!), unplug the cd drive, plug the GCL in then reassemble.

Took me less than 20 mins and that included a deep clean at the same time!

Here is a how to  to a how to install the older version:

They new one is plug and play:https://shop.dansprojects.com/gc-loader-pnp.html

Between this and the HDMI out it seems to make the GB an option. Just to be clear the Wii would be a chappell mod, you just wouldn't be on original hardware.

Here is a to a how to install:
Thats the older non Pnp version that had to be soldered.

In terms of the PNP install its basically identical but no need to solder on the ribbon cable you literally just plug it into the mobo where the CD drive was plugged into.

And this is the HDMI adapter I am using.

LOL, I updated above just before you replied.

I have some back project I want to get down this summer.
    • Got my PSIO early and still haven't done my install.
    • Want to do a second Wii hack but this time use an external HD
    • I have a few PS2 that I was given or got at thrift shop for cheep. Been cloning my 2TB hacked HD, using memory cards I ordered with the mode preinstalled, and HDMI out converters. Been given them away to friends and family, want to get last two done and out.
    • Ended up with a bunch of original XBOX in the same situations as the PS2. Want to get the them done and out to friends/family.

I'm still recovering from Brain surgery but am way closer to normal now. Just want to get these project done as they been on hold so long.

Well the PSIO install is out of my abilities but I have done the WII and PS2 HDD soft mods both are very easy to do and dont take much time.

I want to get my grubby paws on a original Xbox to mod but they still seem to be going for silly money.

Though as mentioned prior everything seems to be going up steeply atm!!

No problem, at times friends and family just give to me their old video game systems. I just like doing the mods and don't want them to be trashed. At the moment I have a few original xboxes. Would rather they end up in homes of collectors then a trash bin.
