Xbox 360 and standard USB steering wheel & pedals?
« on: December 14, 2014, 08:56:47 am »
I realise that the defacto answer to this combination is "no - the 360 will only work with wheels specifically certified for it, and even then only certain games".

But I've hear murmurings of ways to get around this so that any USB wheel can be used, and wanted to see if you guys knew more on this?

I've added one of my 360s into my cabinet and got it hooked with an auto HDMI switch etc so I can swap between PC and emulators, to the 360.  Primarily this is because I wanted to be able to play Forza, in a cabinet, and using a wheel & pedals.  And since I already have a cabinet that has those, hence my query now.

I've found one article showing how a sidewinder wheel can be used to play on the 360, but then they're both Microsoft products anyway so I imagine it's not such a stretch:
http://www.ehow.com/how_7725924_convert-pc-wheel-xbox-360.html

Is there such a thing as an adaptor perhaps that would allow a normal USB wheel to be used so that the 360 thinks it's a legit certified one?

Thanks!

Search online for a G27 to xbox360 adapter.

Most are advertised for the G27 because it's the most requested wheel to use.  All direct input devices use the same protocol though.  (pretty much if it's not an xbox360 controller, it's a direct input device....unless it's decades old)  They'll list other wheels in the details, but the title or headline is always G27.

I don't have an xbox360 and haven't personally used these, so delve into the research to make sure ffb will function as expected.

What type of wheel do you have?

Not found one yet, but I found a thrustmaster wheel & pedal set on ebay BIN for £20!!!!

It was no postage mentioned so I emailed them to ask if they'd post it and got a reply back saying they would, then was gutted to see it'd been bought in between.
That would have solved it, to replace the existing wheel with a compatible 360 one, but they're usually like 10x that cost.

Gutted :(

I just looked that up and it looks great!

I notice in one review it mentions for using stuff with a 360 you still need a legit controller plugged into it initially to 'fool' the handshake or whatever it does, and that makes me wonder if it's no more than what's described in the link I posted earlier on.

I'll buy a 370 controller cable since I don't have one, and try it...

um yeah I think it needs one to authenticate with the console or something so it thinks its a legit controller

like I said tho it may be best to wait till the version 2.0 comes out as its meant to be a lot better for wheels

I actually use it mostly for other things such as using my nivida shield to have portable Xbox 360,PS3, PS4 and Xbox One

Ahh well, I'll know later in the week as I bought a used one on eBay last night!

If it doesn't work I might try it for mouse and kb CoD on the PS3, or resell it to buy a wheel that will work anyway.

Think I've scored a 24" monitor to upgrade from the 19 currently fitted in the cabinet.  Should make stuff like Forza look a bit more tasty. :D

I use a Fanatec Forza CSR wheel, it works natively with PS3, 360, and PC
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

it still works fine, Ive used my fanatec xbox 360 wheel and used cronusmax for using it on xbox one. Worked fine really except for no force feedback, it had a tiny bit of vibration tho

It's a logitech Driving Force wheel/pedals that I've got.  USB connection but I think it was designed for the PS2 originally.
Hopefully it'll work but we'll deal with it using another wheel I guess if not.

Ok so I've got the cronusmax now, and after some initial hassle have got the latest firmware on it.

The objective here is to use the logitech driving force wheel/pedals in my cabinet for playing forza on the 360 in it.

I 'think' this is how I need to rig it up to do that but I may have got the wrong end of the stick....
1) Wheel & pedals plugged into PC (ie the cabinet as they are at present)
2) Download & install CronusMAX-XInput, then do some sort of setup with that.  Plus presumably load some specific profile file to the cronus for forza/360.
3) Plug the cronus into the 360 and also connected to PC (easy enough since they're in the same cabinet)
4) Start the game with a real wired 360 controller (connected to the cronus), then remove that from the cronus, and plug the wheel into it instead?

I might have got this completely wrong, and I need to go read up on the cronus forums.  Most of the stuff I see relates to the XB1, not the 360, so it's feasible it's a bit easier with the 360 but might be the same process.

What I ultimately want is to be able to just start the 360 and begin playing it using the wheel, but if this cable swapping nonsense is necessary I guess I'll have to buy some sort of physical USB switch that can be pressed on the cabinet in order to effectively swap the cables over by pressing a button.

Please feel free to shoot this down (politely) if I'm talking absolute crap!!! :D

Ok a little update on this.

I found part of the problem was needing an actual wired controller for the 360 to authenticate on startup.  I was using a wireless one with the USB cable connected, thinking it'd do the same thing.  Nope!
So I bought a used unbranded one today at extortionate price from a local shop in the hopes it'd work and it does!

So I've managed a lap or two of Forza 4 in the cabinet, using wheel & pedals.  The problem I currently have is the Xinput app that translates the output from the wheel just keeps failing after a short period of time, so you only get part of a race before the app crashes.  The guys on that forum have pointed me at a Beta that's meant to solve this but it's being a ballache to set up in respect of missing dll messages etc, and I'm sure I've done all the stuff I should have done in order to prevent that.

Will have to persevere though.

Have been busy discussing with nerdy colleagues the potential mechanisms I might have to build for the bottom half of my intended converting racer cab.  Could be interesting.....

Great - all seems to be fine and dandy now with this.

I tried one option of using a different Gtuner plugin called MaxAim and this worked great, but with no force on steering wheel, and a big load of sloppiness in the middle of the steering.

Got it working properly with Xinput though finally and it's fantastic now.  Absolutely loving playing forza in my arcade cab with a wheel. :D

Now the plot thickens as to the vague design & planning of V2 of my cabinet.....

Was having a slight issue with 2-3 second screen blackouts while playing Forza in the cabinet, and traced it back to the cheap auto HDMI switch.  It wasn't fully isolating one HDMI signal from another it seems, so I bought a manual switch (which arrived today), and it works perfectly.

Also bought a cheap 32" LCD monitor as an upgrade to the 19" one currently in my cabinet.  It won't fit of course, so I have no choice but to go ahead with build #2..... :D

Just to clarify....

The CronusMAX does work to interface a Logitech wheel with an xbox 360?

Directional force feedback works, not just rumble?

That's pretty awesome if both are true.

Will have to double check and confirm sorry as I've sort of removed a few bits currently.

Ive a feeling that FFb was working but not rumble, so there's a nice resistance against the wheel when racing but I don't think it has  rumble.  Could be wrong though.
The wheel I've got is a PS2 (USB) Logitech Driving force.

Same as this one:
