Anyone know of a program that can do this?
« on: December 05, 2014, 01:09:37 pm »
I am interested in creating my own characters very much like this one.  Not for sell or anything but simply for my own benefit.  The only problem is that I have no idea where to get software like this or even what software it requires!  Does anyone know?

Maybe this will help:
http://www.3ders.org/3d-software/3d-software-list.html

I'm going to plead ignorance here on what is actually the best or easiest, but I've heard that Blender is good for a free program. The pay program that I have brand recognition with is 3D Studio Max. Good luck with your modeling!

+1 on Blender as the price is right and it'll let you know what you're getting into with modeling.

It's not something that you're going to jump right into on day one. But maybe you will.  :dunno The level of difficulty depends on you. Look up some beginner tutorials and work your way up. There are metric ---fudgesicle----tons of videos about Blender out there. Have fun with it, man.

I guess it is dependent on what I want out of it.  Thanks again!

I figure you'll have one of two typical reaction:
1) OMGWTFBBQ
2) Cool I wanna do that

Modelling is easy.  Good modelling is hard.

If it's something you wanna get into you are looking at programs like Blender, 3D-Max, Maya, Lightwave, etc.  Heck, even SketchUp can be used though it's VERY difficult to get anything organic looking out of it (geared towards architecture).

That model you posted in your first post was most likely 2-3 folks and a week of work.  It's very high rez detail and most likely multi layered textures.

1) OMGWTFBBQ

This is the reaction I had.  I never got past cubes and spheres.

Blender is definitely a good start point.  Just watch a bunch of tutorials , the basics aren't too bad but the high level stuff is very demanding.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

yup blender is the 'goto' for starters. It is fun to do a few hours of youtube tutorials. Then if you want to take it past basic shapes then you need serious dedication to the program.

Consider it like this - it is an artist program - good stuff just doesn't springboard from the program.
It takes years to master but if you have an interest and you work hard you will do just fine.
My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

Sorry to chime in late but I went to school for 3d animation.  Out of a class of say 100 only about 5 can be amazing modelers.  I went to school for 4 years and I still suck amazaballs at modeling.  Didn't do too good at the animation either.  What I am getting at is even doing it 24/7 you may not be any good at it.  But like everything else it takes practice and with that you may reach the level you want.  Just don't expect it right away.
