I like your "Dexter" paint booth.   :laugh2:

I'm planning to do something similar with my Fix it Felix build.  I've been rattle canning some smaller pieces but will need a "kill booth" like yours to paint the whole cabinet.

Do you paint with cans because you feel like you get a better finish than you could with a pneumatic sprayer? I feel like the cost if buying that many cans has to be a lot more than the sprayer and paint, especially after a few cabs.

Nothing too major happened over the following weekend.  I proceeded onto paint.  If I could avoid paint I would.  But it's one of those necessary evils.  If I do a cocktail for my next cab I plan on buying the pre finished shelving.  It's like buying particle board with the laminate already pre applied.  Should save me some time.

I just used regular painters tape to mask off the different areas.

On both sides of the inside of the cabinet I used a flat black.

In between letting the layers of paint dry I was able to install the hardware for the control panel.  This included the CP latches, strike plates, and retainer.  These, as of now, are all in stock at Mikes Arcade.

After my flat black had dried I taped the areas for the next coat.  I thought I could get away with a semi gloss but it just didn't give that pop that the gloss had. I also apologize if some of my pictures are a little blurred.  I forgot to use the anti shake feature on my camera so some of them are a little blurred but you get the idea.

I painted the outer sides and bezel retainer with the gloss black.  I thought about going with vinyl on the bezel retainer but I liked how this paint soaks into the wood I got.  It goes in enough just to show the actual wood grain.  I'll try to get a good picture of the results if I can.  I also painted the top of the cab in flat black.  Nobody will ever really see up there so I didn't waste the gloss paint.

Had to dig deep for that one.   ;D

Chance when I did my build there was a short discussion in my thread about this same problem.  I copied chopperthedogs color match correctly and matched that to a Behr color swatch and in real life they were dead on but when I shot a picture of it they were different colors.  Le Chuck can probably weigh in on this but  it  probably has to do with light, color diffusion, etc.  Pictures will  never do the cab justice but it looks pretty bad ass.  I love how you have a circle around the cab where you walked while applying the black.   ;D

And the speaker holes are a ---smurfette---!  I went back and painted mine black, masked  them, painted the blue, unmasked  and touched  them up with a small hobby brush.  My wife made fun of me but in the end it was worth it.  And if you look closely they still look wanky.

Holy isht!  Chance, that looks great!!!!  Never thought of trying to use rattle can to top coat such big panels.  I always thought it was difficult not to get tiger stripes with such a small spray pattern.  And with no runs?  AWESOME WORK!  :applaud:

So, now that I officially own a "fixer-upper" Nintendo cab I'm curious...  What's this issue with the speaker grille when painting?  Anyone have any details?

By the way Chance, your entire paint job looks great!

Great build so far ChanceKJ! I really love the Nintendo Cabs and yours is spot on.  Sorry if you already saw this as I posted it for user Wyo a few days back but I thought you might be interested in this for your Ultimate DK cab:

I found it impossible to find original metal or even reproduction Nintendo cab serial plates. So I did some digging and found this guy that shows you how to make your own:

I used his technique and here is how my Mini DK serial plate turned out:

I even have the artwork files if you want them. Just let me know and I'll send them your way. I made it fully editable in Photoshop with layers.
If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

oops! My apologies. I missed it. Chance is lucky to have a place that could reproduce serial plates. I couldn't find a soul in my area that could.
