Dos Mame duel display for punchout

I have dos mame running with a duel output video ati card and can't seem to find a way to get both displays working for punch out. It's easy to do with -numscreens 2 in XP. I've tried dos mame and advancemame. Am I missing a special cfg or command? Or is this just not possible for games like punchou, Super punch out, and arm wrestling in dos?
