I finally found a way to play GT2 with my steering wheel (properly). I say properly because the epsxe emulator let you set analog controls to a dual shock controller but the deadzone is so terrible, it makes games unplayable with a steering wheel. In comes the NeGcon Controller and NeGcon plugin for epsxe. The NeGcon controller is a PS1/PS2 controller created by Namco as handle held analog control for Ridge Racer. You can read more about here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NeGcon but, the actual NeGcon controller is not needed for this to work, just the NeGcon plugin for epsxe.

Things you will need.

epsxe 1.90
http://www.epsxe.com/

NeGcon Plugin (padgnneco0_06.zip)
https://mega.co.nz/#!dZN11KpC!muXo35Y0C6k1rSGZqyRHRezf_kLWyGqbRZbm6OOqsjo

A Negcon compatible game (listed at the bottom)

1. Place the contents of the NeGcon zip into your plugins folder. Then open and setup epsxe (bios, paths, etc).

2. Go to config and set up pad1. use the drop down to configure the NeGcon. The NeGcon has 4 analog Controls, the L button, the center Twist, I button and II button.

The Center Twist (green) is your Steering
The I Button is Accel
The II Button is Brake
The L button usually shift

The L Button is a pain is because its an analog button and the plugin does not let me map it a button, only an axis. Since my Steering wheel only has 3 axis, I cant map this to anything and by default, it mapped to be fully pressed. I didnt notice this in Ridge Racer but I did notice this when I played GT2 since L button is rear view camera and when I played, the camera was always pointing to the rear.

There are two ways around this issue in GT2, you can go into the actual games setting in GT2 and change the L button to something else like change camera view (you will lose the ability to change camera view) but atleast the default camera will be pointing forward or what I ended up doing was turning on my xbox controller and mapping the L button the my left stick axis (I lose the ability to use rear view camera but, that something I probably wont use anyways)

3. load your iso and hit F5 to turn on your NeGcon Controller You must hit F5 to enable it!!! You will see a NeGcon appear if you did it correctly

4. Play NeGcon Compatible Games with proper Analog controls.

Here is a list of Compatible NeGcon Games (I have only tested Ridge Racer and GT2 so far)

UPDATE: I found a more complete list with even more games!

Same here, just got supermodel working with the racing cab last night (&(${^*%+ pedals...) and now I feel like I am hearing my racing cab talk to me.  I think I am going to name her "Audrey". ;)

I really wish they'd get rid of the need to press F5 for analog.

EDIT: Added this list to the "what to play" stickied thread.

DOUBLE EDIT: I played GT2 once on my arcade cab a few yars ago.  It took so long to get to actual gameplay that I never launched it again.  :lol

Cool thread. It's a shame to see that Ray Tracers isn't on that list though, it's a real fun Chase HQ style arcade racer. I used to own a Jogcon back in the PS1 days purely for Ridge Racer Type 4. It was a fun little peripheral but I don't think it really added to the game much and if anything I used to do worse when I was using it compared to a regular dual shock pad. I wonder if there are any Jogcon plugins for ePSXe that can enable FFB in wheels for stuff like Ridge Racer Type 4?

I can confirm that that Ray Tracers work. I added a few games to my cabinet today. i can confirm that Initial D, Wagan Battle, Touge G max and Crash Bandicoot Team Racing work with the NeGcon Plugin. Sadly Midnight Run (Road Fighter 2) does not work.

Btw for Ray Tracers, only the Euro and Japanese version have the Anime Storyline Dialogue. The US version doesnt have it.

So the $0.50 question, are the games super fun to play?  Do they control fairly flawlessly?  (ie:  similar to how they did on the PS1 or is it one of those "at least it works and control is acceptable? ... which isn't a bad thing).

So far Side by Side Special 2000, Initial D, Ridge Racer(s) and Touge G Max are games I see myself playing often. The Steering in those games actually feel like if I was playing an arcade version of the game.

I actually had Initial D for the PS1 but, I only had a regular controller so I thought it suxed. Ive only played it with my wheel for about 30min but im already loving the way it handles and slides.

He uses hyperspin.

IIRC, ePSXe is covered in UncleT's ancient guide.

I bailed on adding it to my old cab because I didn't want to deal with the having to press F5 to activate analog controls thing.
I'm sure we could find an autohotkey solution.

Same here on Uncle T's guide.  I owe a lot to the guide for helping me through my first setup.
But after messing with this stuff long enough to understand everything, I really dislike the file structure he chose.

The thought of people bugging me every time something doesn't work because they're missing runtimes, didn't follow the instructions, or are running some stripped down version of windows ensures that I will never bother.

I dont know if this is hyperspin doing this or epsxe but I dont have to push F5 every time. It remembered my settings. For example, Last night I was playing initial D, exited and played Side by Side in hyperspin and I didnt have to push F5. It remembered my control configuration.

I just realised that this might be the best way to play Pole Position without a 360 degree wheel! According to rolling-start.com, Namco Museum 1 has NegCon controller support. Now I HAVE to get this working  :notworthy:

That is true, i remember playing PP with a buddy's negcon back in the day!  Forgot about that.

... I wonder if buggy boy and other 360 wheel games have ever been released on other systems with some form of analog control that would make them playable with a g25/27 wheel?

Nice compilation video mate. I must admit I've never been a fan of sim racers, but I gotta say those car models in Gran Turismo 2 look exceptionally nice for a PS1 era game.

Very nice comp video indeed.  Most of these never heard of before but once I saw that I had a ball playing was Motor Toon Grand Prix 2, great game if you come across it IMHO.  I think I liked Ridge Racer Revolution more than the original.  This just motivates me to set this PSX emulator up on the racing cab... once I finish my current mame setup (which feels like its going to take forever.  360 wheel games on a G25 setup appear to be EVIL incarnate!)

I'm having a few problems. When I want to setup my controls for NegCon the analog axis work fine but any other regular pushbutton is impossible to set to anything on the wheel as ePSXe somehow thinks my pedals are pressed? Does the emulator require combined pedals?

Also, I'm experiencing a huge deadzone. Any way to get rid of that? I have a Logitech G27

for the buttons. hold the button you want to map until it shows up (you may have to tap it a few times), then while holding that button click on the next button box. it save the button selected in the last box when you move on the next one and repeat the process(map your pedals last). As for the dead zone, are sure that you have the negcon plugin turned on "hit f5 in-game and you should see a negcon controller appear for a few seconds". What game are you playing? I have a driving force gt which is also 900* degrees like the g27 and i dont have any deadzone issues (although some games do play alot better than others)

I have pressed F5 for NegCon controls  ;)

I've only tried Pole Position in Namco Museum Vol 1 so far. I have to check my profiler settings. Maybe the turn radius on the wheel is crazy, so I will set it to 200 degrees and try that, because right now I can turn the wheel to 11  and 1 o'clock without the emulator registering in game.

F5 activates analog control.  The game might be seeing a dual shock controller if you don't see the NegCon.

For console and very old PC games, I usually set the rotation to 180 or 200 degrees.
For games that were designed only to be played with an analog thumbstick which can change directions way faster than you could move a steering wheel, I've gone as low as 150.  You just can't change direction as quickly as the game requires otherwise.

Finally got around to mess with ePSXe again. Setting the wheel to 200 degrees worked wonder with Pole Position. Now setting up the buttons for the NegCon plugin is a pain in the bum. Is there a file I can edit instead as this is just impossible?
For some reason L1 is set to my g27 clutch pedal and nothing I do can change that.

had a go at this today.
G27:
gran turismo 1 - the throttle keeps engaging and disengaging, so the car never moves
grant turismo 2  - massive dead zone in the middle, unplayable even with modifying the wheel between 40-300 degrees
colin mcrae - slight dead zone in the middle, no matter how much you restrict the wheel, but it is much better than dual shock.

Huge deadzone in GT2 for me as well. No matter the degrees set. Driving Force GT is the wheel I use. Any ideas?

Hey,

I found with EPSXE i get a huge Deadzone regardless of the Plugin used.
With PCSX-R, things work out fine. Maybe try that?

I am hoping someone will hack in JoGcon support or create a JoGcon plug-in for PCSX-R. I really want to play Ridge Racer Type 4 and GT 2 with force feedbaque.

i tried messing with Destruction Derby 2 but NEgcon wont allow you to start the game , only choose car track unfortunately
