Year of Star Wars: x-wing and tie fighter are re-released
« on: October 30, 2014, 10:14:55 am »
Arguably the best Star Wars games ever, x-wing and tie fighter, are now available in a version that works with current computers and operating systems.  I am thinking my U360's will finally get put to good analog use...

So, does Tie Fighter include all of the expansions? I know that it had at least two of them where you get a Tie Advanced and then a Tie Defender.

Yeah, paying $20 for a couple games that were popular when OJ simpson was on trial might be a bit high.....

Noooo!  That is not what the Ferengi want!  The spice must flow!

Seriously,  I hold out hope that "They" have been listening and these are a precursor to the rest, or even better a modern space shooter based on the Star Wars franchise.

So $20 for some great 20 year old games is too much?

Yes, considering I am playing these titles on a Pentium 233 laptop at full speed.  Knock them down to $5 and I will buy them, even with the shoddy dosbox configs to contend with.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

lol, for those of us that ditched that tech 15 years ago, the time spent trying to revive it just to play a $10 game is not worth waiting for a $5 savings.. But then if I decide to buy it, I will probably play for 20 minutes, smile at the memories, and never fire it up again.  That's the only reason I haven't bought it yet..

The thing with GOG is I've never looked at their prices as paying for the game itself.  Rather, it's paying for the convenience of having everything preconfigured to play on modern systems with DOSBox.

Heck, I've bought games through GOG that I already own just for that reason.

Wait,  you drop $2k on your MAME cab, but balk at $20 for these games???  :dizzy:

lol, up to almost $3k now, haha..

and I wasn't the one balking, the alternatives posed to paying $10 for each game right now was to either wait until they are $5 each or use a 20 year old computer to play them..

Since I don't have any 20 year old computers lying around and I don't want to spend 5 hours trying to get what I do have to run DOS, I will spend the extra $5 now to play, even if it is only for 20 minutes.. (much like I spent $3k to build a mame cabinet that I play for 10 minutes each week, lol)  I just haven't bothered to do it yet because I already have a pile of games I don't play..

Yeah, that's what I do with PS4 games, too.

My $2,000 MAME cabinet has 10,000 games on it.  At that rate, I'd be happy to pay 20 cents for these games.

Is there a hack to get avoid having to mouse through all the selection screens and hangars?  Gameplay is great, getting to it is a mousey PITA.
