So for us who don't actually understand this stuff, and who rely on those who do...
Has it been explained how to convert our old set-ups to the new drivers/tools etc? I can't find it anywhere..
I've had a look through the ini files etc, and i THINK i know what to do, but i want to be sure so i don't stuff anything up

Cheers

New beta 4

[05/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 4]

  - [Emudriver]  Fixed installation in Windows 10, still may show a BSOD on install buf after that it seems to work (thanks to R-Typer).

  - [VMMaker]    Ati legacy: fixed polarity settings. This reverts the fix for halved refresh & interlaced modes from beta 1.

  - [VMMaker]    Ati legacy: new option to "Extend desktop automatically on device restart". Meant to help users during monitor setup. (to be improved)

  - [VMMaker]    Ati legacy: now desktop layout is preseved after device restart (to be improved).

Notes

- Please, only test the new tools if you are an EXPERT user. Novice users should keep using the old versions by now.

With regards to the issue with halved refresh on interlaced modes (W7), the new GroovyMAME builds revert the previous fix. In order to avoid the problem, do either one of these things:

Case 1.- If your monitor worked fine with tools 2.0 beta 3, this is because it has no problems with positive sync polarity. Use the new beta 4 tools, and edit your monitor preset to force positive sync. e.g.:

    crt_range0  15625-15750, 49.50-65.00, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 1, 1, 192, 288, 448, 576

This must be done when creating the modes with VMMaker, not only in mame.ini.

Case 2.- If your monitor failed to sync with tools 2.0 beta 3, you need to keep negative sync polarity (default). In order to run interlaced games at full speed, do either one of these things:

               a) Enable frame_delay (e.g. -fd 1) If you have a half-decent machine, this will work smoothly
               b) Force -video ddraw

For non-GroovyMAME programs, there is no current workaround if you are in case 2.

The problem is triggered when the vertical sync polarity is negative. The horizontal sync polarity doesn't seem to matter. Hopefully at some point this new information will allow to find the point in the driver where this nasty feature is rooted, but chances are low right now.

that is a great guide thank you Calamity, especially the pictures which of course really helps!

ps. i like what you wrote towards the end of the guide which says "It's lame to remove the information screens."   ;D     (i agree, it's nice be be able to have a quick look to see if switchres is ok and all is well with the setup)

New beta 5

[07/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 5]

  - [Emudriver]  Added missing dlls for ADL library (thanks to Fonki for reporting). Issue affected HD 5xxx and newer cards. It caused VMMaker not recognizing the driver.

  - [VMMaker]    Fixed problem that forced custom modes to be 32-bit only. Solves issue with ZSNES and probably others. (thanks to tom5151 for reporting).

So do we need to update modes created with old VMM with new VMM now then?

Installing CRT Emudriver 2.0 - HD 4350 - Windows 7 - super resolutions

Thanks heaps for putting this guide together, Calamity.

I'm a bit confused on what needs to be done for a tri-sync monitor (15Khz, 24Khz and 31Khz) now.  ???

Thanks calamity. Great job with the guide. Unfortunately I had to travel to London so I can't try it for a couple weeks. Pm me if you accept donations?

[23/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 6]

  - [Emudriver]  Fixed critical bug in driver that caused the system to get frozen randomly upon display device restart.

  - [VMMaker]
  - [Arcade OSD] Correctly assing sync polarity to AMD HD 5000+ cards. Because AMD documentation is wrong, VMMaker where assigning the polarities the wrong way. This must be the direct cause of most out-of-sync issues reported till now. What happened is that GM assigned positive sync instead of negative, and vice versa. This is fixed now, but you'll need to update your crt_range definitions. By default, negative sync (0) is what should be used in most cases. Thanks to intealls for doing proper checks with an oscilloscope and R-Typer for double-checking.

  - [VMMaker]    ATI legacy: now interlaced modes are reported with full refresh (not halved) in W7+. This should solve problems with games that use a hardcoded 60 Hz refresh.

  - [VMMaker]    Better alignment of modeline generator to GroovyMAME's.

  - [Arcade OSD] Fixed Powerstrip support.

[26/01/2016][CRT Emudriver 2.0][CRT Tools 2.0][beta 7]

  - [Emudriver]  Forced reset of interleave flag upon device power-up. Fixes problem with ATOM-15 flashed cards that caused a shrinked picture with progressive modes and double picture with interlaced modes.

Thanks to R-Typer for testing!

Still using beta 5.  If I install b6 (or b7 now), should I go back and change my arcade presets in vmmaker and mame.ini back to 0 (negative sync)?  I had set them to 1 for beta 5.

It depends on the video card family, the sync polarity has to be switched for HD 5000+ only. Legacy cards already had the right polarities before beta 6.

HD4350.  I'm guessing that I need to go back to negative polarity?

Awesome Calamity!

"There's some overscan, which I'll focus on fixing at a later stage."

Any chances we will see a guide in the future that explains how to fix that?

New guide:

Installing CRT Emudriver 2.0 - HD 5450 - Windows 7 - super resolutions

Can you make an updated guide for us running winXP too without super/magic resolutions?
Or can we still follow the old one by cools on arcadeotaku?
On a scale of fakeness, from more genuine to more fake, we'd have:

1.- Plastic plants (cf. Fake Plastic Trees)
2.- Inflatable dolls
3.- Arcade cabinets with LCD monitors

I'd like to, however writing guides is super time consuming, and I'd say Windows XP doesn't have any secret at this point, basically the new VMMaker provides a GUI interface for the options you used to find in the ini file of the old version.

Hi @Calamity,

I think there is a small issue in  CRT Emudriver 2.0 beta 8 for 7870XT card.
The atiilhag10.inf and atiilhag10.inf files contain an extra " before the = for AMD679E.1 device.

Code: [Select]
AMD679B.1  =  "AMD Radeon HD 7990 (CRT Emudriver - WDDM v1.20)"
AMD679E.1" =  "AMD Radeon HD 7870XT (CRT Emudriver - WDDM v1.20)"
AMD6800.1  =  "AMD Radeon HD 7970M (CRT Emudriver - WDDM v1.20)"

Works great with my 4350, so far (only recently upgraded to latest version). Only problem I've noticed is that videos in MaLa are very flaky. They usually play very choppy with a reduced fame rate, but sometimes they play fine. I have no idea if this has anything to do with CRT emudriver v2, though.

Just bought a 5450 for my next MAME rig, on the advice of Calamity.  :) Be interested to see if I still get the video issue.

Yes I get this too.
I've tested both a HD5970 and a HD4670 and am finding that I get low FPS animation in menu scrolling, themes, and videos in Hyperspin. It appears to happen mainly in interlaced resolutions, specifically 640x480 which is what HS is set to. It also happens on the desktop, which is also 640x480, and is particularly noticeable when you drag windows around. Problem doesn't occur if I select progressive resolution. Problem also doesnt occur if I uninstall CRT_Emudriver.

I havent been able to pinpoint the cause. When I was testing HD5970 I initially thought perhaps it was GPU's downlocking because of Powerplay feature, but I disabled ULPS and Powerplay and forced consistent clocks with MSI Afterburner and results were still the same. Then tested HD4670 and getting same results.

Just as a side note, I tried installing CCC only, after CRT Emudriver (as another had tried) but it wouldnt install. I wanted to try to get it to install so I could play with some settings and see if I could pin down the low FPS issue.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, both cards have had BIOS's modded with ATOM-15.

Interesting. My problem is in interlaced mode too, but I haven't tried it in a progressive mode, TBH. I haven't flashed my BIOS with ATOM-15. I also tried to install CCC to have a poke around, but failed.

What's interesting is that if I install CRT_Emudriver, say with the HD5970, but don't generate a res list then HS scrolling is super smooth. But if I generate a list and install it then the problem occurs.
I though maybe this was a by-product of the issue with halved refresh rates in Windows 7, but what is also interesting is that when I boot up, HS menu scrolls smoothy for about 5 - 10 seconds and then goes choppy, so I'm thinking twice about that. I have HS shelled so Windows boots straight into it.

I still need to do more testing.

Confirmed here. I had tested HS but because I don't use it regularly I just thought the animations were like that.

The problem is linked to Aero. If you use a desktop theme without Aero, it doesn't seem to happen.

But because that's not an option starting from Windows 8, the other solution is to simply not use a custom video mode for the desktop. This is only possible through EDID emulation with the HD 5000+ cards. Just remove the 640x480 mode from user_mode.ini, then create the mode list and install it. You'll still have the fallback 640x480 mode that comes from the emulated EDID, which doesn't have the issue.

Alternatively, you can create an EDID with a non-standard resolution like 648x480 in order to use it for the desktop, so you can still have a customizable 640x480 mode for MAME. However current VMMaker doesn't allow this yet. Next version will allow you to select the default EDID's mode.

  • Mmmm, arcade classics!
Just tried turning off aero by selecting the 'Windows 7 Basic' theme, and that seems to have sorted the issue. Thanks for the tip, calamity!

  • If quizzes are quizzical, then what are tests?
The problem is linked to Aero. If you use a desktop theme without Aero, it doesn't seem to happen.

Doh! Of course it's Aero. I've had issues with Aero before and this completely slipped my mind. Thanks for the heads up! I guess it can also be disabled on a per app basis if there are some that insist on having Aero on in their desktop.

What's the point/benefits with super resolutions in Win 7?

Just installed Win 7 but before I install super resolutions, what's the difference between these and the normal user modes?

What's the point/benefits with super resolutions in Win 7?

Just installed Win 7 but before I install super resolutions, what's the difference between these and the normal user modes?

Pros
-----
Smaller mode list -> better overall system performance (long mode lists make system slow during boot and mode switching in W7)
Superwide resolutions -> perfect horizontal centering, much higher refresh accuracy (~7 times more accurate)

Cons
-----
You need a faster GPU to use frame_delay without tearing.

Sweet! Sounds like super resolution is the way to go then :D
What's the minimum requirements in terms of memory on graphics cards to be able to use frame_delay without tearing when using super resolutions?

So it there any downside to using using new 5xxx or 6xxx series gpus compared to older 2xxx and 4xxx series cards??. I know a while back the older series card allowed for more and lower res presets than newer cards, is this still the case?

Blurry interlaced resolutions, that's all. Besides this it's better to use HD5xxx or higher because new cards does not suffer from halved interlaced resolutions for example Taito Type X games works correctly.

Thank you so much for the guide "Installing CRT Emudriver 2.0 - HD 4350 - Windows 7 - super resolutions"!

I just had a question and wondered if I may have done something wrong. Please keep in mind this is my first time dealing with all this.

I completed this step correctly:
  • "Now that we have the good stuff on the TV, it's time to remove the desktop from the PC monitor. Still in Display->Screen Resolution I go to the "Multiple displays" pull-down menu and select "Show desktop only on 2". Click Apply.
  • "The PC screen will turn black, and so will do its icon in the display dialog."
Then I unplugged the PC monitor as instructed, and here is the step where my experience differs from the guide:
  • "This step is vital. I must force Windows to detect the new situation, and memorize it. And I want it to happen now when I have the control, not later at boot time. To do this, click on Detect."
When I clicked on Detect, nothing happened. My main desktop didn't move over to the other input. So I wasn't able to complete the rest of that part of the guide.

I just went right into setting up MAME. I launched games and they seemed to work correctly. I reset my PC and it loaded the desktop at 15khz on my K7000 arcade monitor.

One thing I noticed is that when the VGA from my Jpac was plugged into the DVI>VGA converter in the beginning of the guide, the picture was more stable. Now that it's plugged into the VGA, it appears to be more shaky/jumpy on the desktop (actual games display just fine).

Anyway, just curious what I'm missing out on or what I may have messed up.
