Consoles & Connections
« on: January 21, 2020, 10:12:28 am »
What TV is best (by which I mean as-designed/authentic) for each console/system.

For example,
PS3 or PS4 connection is an HDMI so an LCD HD TV with HDMI input is ideal
Google Stadia potentially a 4k TV and so on.

Those are the easy ones, as are those with UHF leads:
ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64 to a CRT TV via the aerial/UHF say
Same with SNES

Commodore Amiga via Scart to a CRT or to a

But what of those with a SCART input, such as the Commodore Amiga or Wii or XBox or PS2 and so on. Do these work best to a CRT or to an LCD? I guess the consoles were released between CRT and LCD so work with either, but what are they best on - what were they designed for, resolution wise?

Sorry if it's vague - I'm trying to determine what to connect to a CRT (with UHF and Scart inputs) and an LCD (with HDMI,Scart, Composite and even PC inputs). An even split between would probably be ideal, though given the LCD has more available perhaps more to that.

It'd be:
Acorn Electron (UHF, scart available from 3rd party)
ZX Spectrum (UHF)
Commodore Amiga (scart)
SNES (UHF)
-- The dividing line between CRT and LCD? -------
XBOX Original (Scart?) has emulators on also.
PS2 (Scart? Composite?)
PS3 (HDMI)
Wii (Composite? Scart?)
Mini-Snes & Mini-NES (HDMI)
PC - for retro/Mame etc. via PC input to LCD? Or somehow to CRT?
Raspberry Pi (HDMI) but for emulators
Google Stadia (HDMI via 4K Ultra chromecast were I to have a 4K TV)
You get the idea.... several computers/consoles of various ages to 2 TV's - 1 CRT and 1 LCD-1080p but which is more suited to which?
Scart inputs best to LCD or to CRT for instance? Or does it depend on the console/resolutions of them or indeed what they were designed for at the time?

In my case everything PS2/Xbox etc era and older is connected to a CRT via SCART.

Anything newer connect it Via HDMI.

Just a point of argument here.... the xbox/ps2/gamecube generation had some games (in the case of the gamecube, technically every game) that supported 480p via component out, which scart can't do.... those should probably be hooked up to an lcd tv as well.

Its the change over gen that one.

I hook the PS2 up to the CRT for lightgun games.

But I do have the GC hooked up to a LCD.

Thanks both

Will connect the change over gen ps2/Xbox to component out on the lcd tv
That works better for me anyway - uses more of the ports and also doesn’t leave everything on the CRT apart from my PS3 and Google Stadia which I hardly use and am unlikely to keep anyway !
