Cab build. MAME Conversion. I don't have a fancy name...
« on: September 22, 2014, 10:35:34 pm »
I'd like to thank all the people on this forum.  I did a ton of reading and research to get me where I am today and this forum was one of my biggest tools to help along the way!

This is the finished product if someone doesn't want to have to scroll to the bottom to see it:

Picture from original c-list ad.  Picked the cab up for $300.

Buttons!!

Tearing down the 'cade

The original marquee.

Tearing off the decals.  This was a huge pain in the ass.  Somewhere in it's lifetime the original stickers had been spray painted black and this process took an entire weekend.

Shoddy workmanship from who knows when...

Hacked up...

Mutant Ninja Captain America!  Discovered that the Captain America cab was originally a TMNT cab.

Arcade Guts...

Finally Stripped.

Top of Control Panel.

Mock Up on Control Panel.

Fastening the control panel.  The whole thing was done pretty much on scratch paper.  The angles were cut with a circular saw.

Dry Fit.

Button Placement.

Drilling Holes

Bondo, Bondo, Bondo!!!

I wish I got a shot of it all sanded, it looked good.  This is sanded and primed.

Black paint.

T-moulding.

Buttons installed!

Cabinet moved to its final resting place.

:banghead: I forgot to counter sink the areas for the joysticks!.  Also installed the threaded inserts.

:banghead:  :censored: BLOWOUT!!!  I screwed the inserts in too deep!  This is a view of the top of CP.

Fixing the CP.  I routed out the busted areas about 1/8" deep and then filled with bondo, let everything set and sanded the whole top.

Repaint.

This part was super depressing.  I got so far and things really stalled here.  When I repainted the top, it never really dried.  For what ever reason the paint stayed sticky!  I let it dry for over a month and it just stayed tacky.  I tried sanding it again but that didn't work, it kept gumming up sanding discs.  Instead of ditching it and starting over, I had an idea...

Game On Graphix came through big time!

New Marquee!

Button Install and Wiring Porn!!

Finished Control Panel

Cab put together...but not for long...

The monitor wasn't playing nice with the arcade vga and jpac.  It would hold for about 30-45 seconds and then begin to drift and roll.  I messed with it for an entire weekend trying to get it to work but couldn't figure it out.  In the end I was ready to just get operational soooo....

Re-wired the marquee light to a two prong plug.

Mock up and notch measurement for flat screen.

Notch and dry fit.

Hanging the LCD.

Moved the screen an inch down.  Got a piece of glass for the bezel.  Taped the screen for paint.  The top section is for the Aimtrack, the bottom is for the IR remote.

Finished Bezel!

I'm really pleased how it turned out!

Thanks for looking!  I know that was a lot of pictures.  If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer them!

:applaud: Great job dude. This cabinet is beautiful both inside and out. The one that I converted pales in comparison to yours.

Awesome job! I am digging the color scheme, and the control panel looks great! I might have to steal borrow that design when I build my mame machine.

looks good! My first thought was "was that a Simpsons or a TMNT cab?"

Still have the monitor, PCB, Avengers CP, and marquee?

Thanks!

I still have the monitor, PCB and Marquee.  They are for sale if you or anyone else is interested.  The Avengers CP went to a friend already.

Make sure you correct the angling on the outer joysticks if you do steal the design.

As in dont angle them. Make them line up with the screen:

Yeah, I wasn't going to say anything because it's been hashed out to death, but when someone said they wanted to steal the design, I felt I should pipe up.

Scott, the .gif please?

I see.  I pulled up this thread:
https://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,134020.0/viewresults.html

All I can say is that it has worked really well for me and my friends so far.  I had 5 people over this weekend and we were all trading out positions on it and it played well.

You pull up that thread before or after?

I dont care so much about the outer players figuring out which way is up, but I kept em straight so that 2 player Smash TV / Robotron / Total Carnage / Karate Champ / etc is an option

I pulled that up just now.  I still wouldn't change it seeing that pole.  It feels great as is, I will try some of those games this evening and report back though!

Good, like Malenko says, there's a whole subset of dual joystick games you'll be able to play if you set the joysticks up correctly. They won't work otherwise.

It's in the FAQ.
