Rocks! Scratch-built Asteroids Cabaret
« on: September 04, 2014, 12:57:47 pm »
Here's my scratch-built Asteroids cabaret. Not many construction pics, but you get the idea...

Cheap (actually free!) PC and 15" CRT Monitor
MAME 0.148 with vectordiff
Ultimarc iPAC and LEDutil for controls and start button lighting
Super-flat matt black finish with vinyl sides
Matt laminated CPO with original leaf switches and buttons
Backlit film marquee, lit with cheap LED strip from eBay
Batterd coin door stripped, filled and repainted, added Atari sticker
Custom MALA layout to select Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe
Atari sticker for back panel

I love everything about this. A barcade, filled with "new classics" is high on my list of dreams and wishes. (Yes, this is the exact same comment as in your other thread.)

Holy hell that's amazing!

Was on one of those cabinets at the South Coast Slam a few months ago and I gotta say that looks pretty much dead on...!

Think I'm going to have a look at this vectordiff stuff when I get some time.

Really nice build!
What resolution do you have for the gfx/monitor?
Is there any "user friendly" information anywhere regarding MAME with vector diff?

Thanks dude. The monitor is set at 1024x768. I just had another look on the computer and it looks like I just used regular 0.148 and tweaked it, I can't remember! I may however have used this version (scroll down two thirds of the page, there's a link here to a Compiled Mame v0.142 with vector diff (by mogli):

http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=270989&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&vc=1

The Samsung monitor was almost brand new and has a bright, crisp display, with lovely phosphor trails.

I played on an original machine recently and I can't see much difference picture-wise (I know all the vector owners will tell me otherwise), except the old 'feint bullets' problem, which is a trade-off for not having dedicated hardware.

Thanks. I will download and evaluate that some day, since I have an old CRT PC monitor for a purpose like this.

Yeah, I have an old Vectrex machine I use now and then, and there is nothing that can replicate effects like the “between level hyperspace” in Minestorm. However, having a 90% emulation to play on is better than having nothing at all, since I have a gutted Star Wars cabinet I want to use in the future. I do realize that finding a color vector monitor will never happen, and I will not rebuild it like this ;)

WOW - Excellent quality build, and a nice take on an old classic.

Nice to see the old "10p" coin mechs as well.  Would like to see a few more pics on the inside of this cabinet for monitor mount / emulation details.

Can I ask.... where did you get the matt laminated CPO overlay?, it looks very good quality.

Absolutely love it, well done! I've got an original and it looks just about spot on.

Are you going to add any more games? I think there are a bunch more vector games that work with those controls...

Cheers Minwah! Gonna leave it at Asteroids & Deluxe for the moment, I want to call this one 'finished' or I'll be tweaking it til kingdom come...

What was the cost of the control panel, and did they bend it to shape? If you don't mind me asking

The control panel is wood, so peanuts! The vinyl overlay was about £8-10 GBP, part of a larger order.

Would you know what type of vinyl that is? Love the texture on it and would suit a similar curved panel I'm wanting to cover.

Fantastic cabinet btw.  8)

It's matt laminated, sometimes known as crystal matt laminated.

Thanks. Quick search for crystal matt laminate and it appears to be a clear film you can apply on top of a surface (e.g. pictures / artwork).  So have you just painted your CP black and covered with this or do you also have standard black sign vinyl under it also?

I'm after the same appearance but in a dark grey if possible and would cover all surfaces of a table cabinet I've been planning.

Cheers again.

The vinyl and lamination are one piece, supplied by the printer.

Congratulations! Awesome build!

Could you post the plan/sizes ? Where did you got those wonderful volcano buttons?

Pinned in my favorites.. and messed with my arcade cabinet planning... now I'm back again to the point of deciding if I go to a slim cab. wall mounted or cabaret again hehehe

Best Regards!

Thank you! The CP is just 3/4" MDF. The yellow colour is a spray primer/filler undercoat.

....MAME 0.148 with vectordiff....
nice job on the cab, looks great :)
... if u didnt know, a while back, asteroids (and asteroids deluxe) in mame had a problem of not running smoothly (you could do a test which is, fly your spaceship at full speed in any direction, and it should remain perfectly smooth in motion. if it jumps/judders regularly at certain points, this game is not running right like it should).
this bug was fixed a few mame versions ago, i dont know if it was fixed in mame 0.148 though.
anyway you can fix the problem yourself by following the steps in this link below: (or update your mame version):
http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=281484

Paul - Also try looking at your local Goodwill/Salvation Army for those.  You can usually find the speakers for super cheap and just rip off the part ya need and cut to size.  Places like the arcade shops and speaker websites really gouge you on the price for that stuff so I wouldnt even bother looking.
