Slot Machine with coin in- and output - possible?
« on: August 24, 2014, 01:47:32 pm »
Hi there

Im building a Slot Machine for my mancave. While thinking about the software, I found out about MAME. I did some research if it is possible, however, I got different results and don't know what to think.

I really want to have a coin mechanism. I want to input coins and also want it to spit out coins. This is essential. So I need a game that not only allows mappable input (which seems doable) but also output for the coin hopper. What I know until now is, that it may be against MAMEs ethics to allow money gambling on its machines. So I have to ask here: is a game out there that allows me to do this?

Honestly, if you want something that pays out, the best route would be to buy a used slot machine.

You can buy them... The last one I got(used Bally) was around 400.00us ,over 20 years old (my state law for even having one), and was shipped in 3 boxes, cab, reels, hopper, this apparently gets around shipping a slot over state lines and brings it down to its only parts???.... I did buy one a few years ago that had a progressive feature, Jennifer would stay away from these though, it was a real pain to trick it to not remember its life in a casino.... Oh and if you plan to trick A mame into taking coin, you will find your pretty much on your own.

Hi!

Thanks for the quick responses. I thougth about buying a "real" one. However, I live in Switzerland. A 20lbs package i.e. costs about $180 for shipping. Shipping for such a huge thing will not be payable. Unfortunately nothing in good shape is available under $2000 around here. So I thought aboout making my own.

I already did some programming on my own Slots software, but looked for something easier, say: buy software. I found something customizable, actually just what I was looking for, but for $400, which is, considering what the hardware will cost, also a bit much.

Thanks!

If you figure it out, let us know! I'd love to build one with a working hopper for my mom.

If we stick with MAME, shouldn't Mamehooker solve this (in theory) since from a technical point of view there is no different sending a signal to a lamp or a hopper.

MAMEhooker only works if the outputs are hooked up in the MAME code.
AFAIK, the only ones that are done are the ones that Howard did himself and they do not include any slot machines.

Before you guys get all " its easy to build" The op may want to take a look @ a slot manual, and price the hopper (cast pig iron, very difficult to duplicate) and obtain with the odds counter.... the reels are a bit easier however they were designed to be changed out for different games, but still a complex series of ratcheting hardware and solenoids to run them.

Eh actually developers are getting a lot better about this.  It took a few dedicated byoacer's doing stuff like doing a full Outrun replacement to get them to understand the potential of the output system, but now devs generally hook up easy stuff like lamps and solenoids.

That being said....

I'm pretty sure devs intentionally don't hook up stuff like hoppers and coin counters to prevent mame from being used to make counterfeit slot machines and arcade cabs.  Now the blinky lights on the slots... those will probably work.  If you want an actual payout though.....

And there it IS.... Go to any rom/mame site and start asking how to opt for the credit/payout option.(No really don't) because you most likely hear
"Mame is free, and not to be used for personal gain".... That's not to say it wouldn't work however, and coupled with a Aruendo Its more likely very possible. There are some really good deals on real ones on the bay, and even with inflated shipping, a lot of work could be saved.

where i am going to side with the deve's on this 1
not for profit
it can be done
u will need 4 line's to the hooper. + power

but the price of them is in around 600.00 usd
unless u get 1 from a reel machine that need's re-building

so that kinda blow's any low budget out the door

You can get a pachislo slot which has manual stop buttons but has a hopper and reels.   For about $50 dollars you can get a card that interfaces between the button and main board to change the operation to real slot action.  No stop buttons need to be used.  The hopper already counts and drops coins or tokens depending on how the coin mech is set.  From there you have a working mech but you will need to customize it to make what you want.
