"Dedicated" Street Fighter II Cabinet Project
« on: August 15, 2014, 10:53:15 pm »
Ok. Here's the deal. I've made the realization that I'm not going to be able to sell the War: Final Assault cabinet I'm trying to sell and I'm not going to just give it away because the monitor is so good and that's worth at least a couple hundred (imo), so I am thinking of turning it into a "dedicated" SFII Mame cabinet to play ALL the incarnations of SF. It would have a full, custom artwork package and I already have all the components needed from when I de-Mame'd by Commando machine.

The empty KI2 cabinet I picked up a few weeks ago will still be used for the Mortal Kombat X project next year, so I plan on using the War cabinet for this SFII project. I'm not going to go crazy or anything. Just using the normal 6-button templates for P1 and P2 and that's it. No gaudy trackballs or 100 buttons and spinners.

I'm going to design some artwork and see what I can come up with. Until then, what would you guys think about something like this? Yea or nay? Worst case scenario, it can always be converted back to War later down the line.

Thanks for your time.

-Mike.

Hey, thanks for linking that! I'll be watching it. As for what I have in mind for my version, I don't plan on making this a 'masterpiece' or anything like that....so how about something quick and easy?

this ain't no racing game! why you got diamond plate on it!  ;D j/k

I like it. Either the diamond plate or the old SFII concrete background would work possibly.

But I think if you're gonna do a "every street fighter ever" style cab, you need a few more characters on it. Don't wanna overload the sides with everyone. Split them all up over the sides, control panel and marquee. Bosses could go on the marquee....etc...etc. But definitely go with maybe 4 on each side maybe?

Or...do a collage of different arcade flyer/posters from each game. Have like a brick wall style background and have them all posted up on the wall. That may be bad ass.

I like Gatsu's idea infinitely better.  And after seeing pretty much every MK cab converted to every Tekken game, Im fine with a Street Fighter conversion.

ok here we go again with the diamond plate on a fighting game.......you guys are killing me......

I would just spruce up the marquee and CP, if you've seen his machines setup they are packed like sardines, side art won't even be seen.

Diamond plating is on the official artwork for some street fighter cabs. so gets over it already!  :P

If you really dig this I'll make a high-res version. I just threw it together real quick with some low res stuff I had sitting on my hard drive. Just let me know which posters you want on each side and I'll make it pretty.

i am over it   :applaud: but go ahead make a streetfighter racer game....make sure you get that steering wheel straight.

Bricks are fine, and your version is cool........however pro diamond plating on fighting games seems to be the "in" thing to do.....

No, I don't plan on going that far. For now, it will just be all the games that are supported by Mame or PC.

Your dudes are floating in the air.  Give them a ground to stand on.  Or...put them in a jumping stance.  As it stands, they are...standing....in the air.

Also, could you adapt the logo to look more like graffiti?  You are on your way.

Better, but I wish there was something more you could do with the size of the lettering. And personally, I wouldn't even consider Capcom. To me, the marquee is for the name of the game.

The project is now in full swing. While waiting for the side art to get finished up from my buddy who's doing it for me, I went ahead and got the the CPO printed and completed the control panel build. It's not wired up yet, but otherwise completed. New, custom CPO, new Lexan, new Buttons/Sticks/Switches and new T-Molding. I gave the sides and front a fresh coat of paint. Once I get the side art, I'll take everything to the print shop and then it's the waiting game. I'll start working on the cabinet this weekend. I redesigned the sides to match the front. The last two pictures are what I am using for the sides and front. Stay tuned...

I re-did the CP sides and front using the brick background from the side art so it all matches. All the artwork files are being delivered to the printer tomorrow...

This does look good, but IMHO the wall should be more grimy. If you put this next to the sideart, you'll get this :

The clean wall of the CP sticks out a little bit.

It was also pointed out that I installed two P1 templates instead of a P1 and P2. The joystick directions for P2 were the same as P1. I fixed the template and will install it on the panel later....

I like the wall background with the original poster art on it.
Very cool concept, great for a cabinet that would feature various versions of the SF franchise.
In terms of marquee I'd go with the brick background and just the STREET FIGHTER text, even using the text from SFIV. (I like that font stlye)

For the CPO I like the original SFII CPO, the grey speckled background to me is simply SF.

Bezel........... I'm torn.......perhaps using the brick agian ? Not sure.

But some great concept artwork no doubt.

I also made a quick update video...

Just got finished with all the cosmetic work and artwork application. The monitor and PC are just slaved in for picture purposes. None of the cabinet wiring is done. I'm waiting until this weekend to finish all that up. I still need to get new locks and other minor items as well. Here it is for now. Opinions are always welcome. Stay tuned for when it's completely finished...

Got the machine completely wired up and ready to go. I am still messing around with trying to get the SF Naomi games and SSFIV to work but for now, it's all done. I am contemplating getting rid of the bezel and just going with something similar like the first picture. When I get the machine in the house and added to the collection, I'll shoot a video of how it all operates and do some various gameplay. Stay tuned!...

It's dark and the characters are not looking at each other, nor are they looking at the logo in the middle.

I completely agree. I was just trying to come up with something besides just having a blank bezel. I'll come up with something else. Thanks for the advice.

I'd suggest bezel cards , but instead of character / move lists, maybe the game logo with the year they came out?

Marquee.... that's tough. There's tons of great art (especially by Udon) , maybe you could just slap a SF logo over that?

So based on some negative feedback regarding the bezel I made, I came up with this instead. I chose not to have a background to make it appear less 'busy' compared to the rest of the artwork. If you think it would look better with a background, I'm open to suggestions. There are two versions. Looking for opinions on if you like the design at all and/or which version you'd suggest. Thanks...

I would use the orignal sf 2 bezel. But change the grey rock with the brick on the sides and cp of the cab.

Id say use the SF2 bezel, but fix the odd factory coloring
