What to play with your new driving setup. WIP
« on: August 05, 2014, 02:57:53 pm »
EDIT  Un=stickying this thread.  Copied the lists into the driving cab info thread.

(taking the time to do this because I can get away with working on it while at work  >:D )

I thought it would be nice to have a complete list of what games are
playable with a 270 degree setup since that's what most people have and
it would cover those with just PC wheels also.  In its final form, it can
act as a guide for someone trying to figure out what to install on their system.
This will probably be integrated into the driving cab info thread or maybe get its own sticky when more complete.

I have a 360 degree MAME list that I'll go ahead and paste to the driving
cab info thread.

Some of these games may require a bleeding edge PC or shifter workarounds
like RacerMAME (see the driving cab info thread)
I may make some system for denoting that later, but for now want to get
all the games that are playable listed.
I'll probably also mark the motorcycle or other type games in some way.

I haven't play tested all of these (especially the console games).
If you see something that doesn't work, let me know.
If I'm missing something that does work, let me know.

MAME (there have probably been some added to working status since
I last checked, please chime in if you notice something missing)
There are a few 360 degree wheel games that are perfectly playable with a 270 degree wheel.
Those are currently missing from this list.  I will add when they're tested and verified to work properly.

Console (Analog Control only):
To be honest, I've never been able to get the controls dialed in well enough for these to feel right to me.
As a result, I've played very little of the console games on my cab.

If you have the option, the main thing is limiting the amount of your steering wheel rotation.  (if you have a Logitech G27 with 900 degrees of rotation, reduce it to 150 degrees or less)
A lot of these games were designed to be played with an analog thumbstick which can change direction quickly.
There's just no way to change direction on a wheel that quickly if the wheel needs to be rotated 270-900 degrees.

There are some good ports on Nintendo 64 for games that either don't work or require a lot of horsepower to run in MAME.

Ok for Naomi games.... I'm not aware of a title called 4 wheel thunder.  I think that was a dreamcast game.

Thanks.  Fixed.  I started out with a "demul supported games" list and noticed it was dreamcast a few games in.
Somehow that one got left in.

Is F-Zero AX not playable in Dolphin Triforce?
That's one game I'd love to be able to play.

It is and it isn't.

F-zero GX works in dolphin and it was discovered that all the assets for f-zero ax are contained within the game.  So via a buttload of action replay codes you can make gx behave pretty much like ax within dolphin (not triforce).  It isn't really ax though.  Damn close.

What I'm going to do is make two copies of gx so that I can have a separate ini file for each and add the AR codes to one of them... that way I can play either.

the actual rom for triforce has been dumped, and works on the hardware via netbooting (so the security has been cracked). I'd be curious what it is that's keeping it from running in dolphin triforce.

Yeah well there were a lot of games on the triforce hardware, but thus far only Mario kart 2 works on the emulator.  So I'm guessing the emu has some pretty kart-specific hacks in place.

Yeah well there were a lot of games on the triforce hardware, but thus far only Mario kart 2 works on the emulator.

Not really,  Tri-Force was severely underutilized... the was only a handful of games made and half of them would be worthless trying to emulate because of heavy reliance on custom hardware... outside of Mario Kart and F-Zero there was:

Virtua Striker 4 (various revisions) - Viable for emulation
Gekitou Pro Yakyuu - a Japanese baseball game, viable for emulation but who really cares.
Starfox  - a vertical shooter but never officially released beyond the prototype stage
The Key Of Avalon (several games in a series) - Network terminal Japanese language RPG, not really viable for emulation
Donkey Kong Jungle Fever - Redemption machine with huge amount of custom hardware, not viable for emulation
Donkey Kong: Banana Kingdom  - Redemption machine with huge amount of custom hardware, not viable for emulation

^ I believe that's it.... so 2 "meh" sports titles and a cool prototype that we'll probably never get a dump for. Mario Kart and F-Zero are the only two titles I think anyone really cars about on the platform.

the Wii based arcade hardware is even more obscure... that only got 1 game: Tatsunoko Vs Capcom

I'd love to see that emulated as it's a really great fighter. Thankfully Dolphin runs the Wii Console release great, but I'd still like to see the arcade version available.

I get your point, but "a lot" is relative these days.  The average console based arcade hardware gets about 5-10 games released so that seems like a lot to me compared to the aforementioned wii arcade hardware or the classic xbox.

Classic Xbox hardware (Chihiro) had over a dozen games that are viable for emulation... if you include the network terminal and Mahjong crap that number doubles. It's low but it's more than twice what the Tri-Force got.

As far as console based hardware goes the the Tri-Force is maybe the 3rd LEAST utilized of any production console based arcade hardware with the Wii being number 1 (with 1 game total) and the PS3 being number 2 (with 6 games in total)... but that's mostly because the two of them were produced in a time where it's more cost effective to use PC hardware as opposed to consoles.

The "average" is much much higher when you consider that the Dreamcast had several hundred games released for it's arcade platforms and the PS1 and PS2 based and even the Saturn based hardware all had 80+ titles...  Heck even the older consoles like the NES and Genesis had about 50+ each on just the Playchoice 10 and Mega-Tech.

A metric ton.

You've got all the sumo stuff (outrun 2k6, sega all stars ect) the need for speed series, the dirt series, the knight rider games (which are just awful, but still fun) all kinds of indie/homebrew stuff and more sims than you can shake a stick at.

Honestly a list of stuff that would run on a x86 pc would be quite long.  It's filtering out the crappy games that I've always had a problem with.

Aside from the ones Howard_Casto listed out, I recently discovered Gaz Guzzlers Extreme on Steam. It works great with FF and a buttkicker. You would want your wheel to have buttons on it so you can shoot/boost during the races. I think it's $25 but I grabbed it when it was on sale for $10. I think it's worth the $25.

Thanks, I'll try out something new on my cab. The newest racing game I've ever tedted is Forza on the original X-box. I've just purchased the bew game, Corsa something, I hope my cab hardware is up to it, cpu is old, gfx card is up-to-date though.

Also something that should be pointed out is a lot of the sega racers that are hard to emulate on lower end PCs got pc ports.  They are kind of old and thus you have to look for them, but they are out there.

Just a little update on the PPSSPP front - Sega Rally Revo now works pretty much perfectly on the latest unofficial builds. Also, there was an issue with Burnout legends where the audio track kept changing every 5 secs (got pretty annoying, pretty quickly) which seems to have been fixed now, along with a graphical bug involving the sky in the background. Also, whilst technically  not really something you'd probably play in an arcade racer cab, I'd highly recommend checking out Wipeout Pulse. Graphically it just blows pretty much every other PSP racer out of the water and upscaled on PPSSPP it looks PS3 quality. It's also runs at 60 fps, has a totally amazing soundtrack and plays as good as it looks.

The bloom effects seem to have gone a bit haywire in Ridge Racer 2 in later PPSSPP builds (you can turn them off by turning off buffered rendering, but everything doesn't look quite as shexy...), so if you're a Ridge Racer fan (another great looking PPSSPP racer BTW), it worth holding onto an older build also - v0.9.5 seems good, although the bloom's still a tiny little bit off in it.

Edit: Forgot to mention; I'd also add Ray Tracers for the PS1 to the list. It's made by Taito and is a sort of unofficial follow up to the Chase HQ series with the same bash-the-bad-guys formula, except instead of the baddies driving knock off Lambos and Lotuses it's more like mecha-tanks, Helicopters and Harrier jump jets. It's a bit of an oldie and pre-dates the analog dual shock pads, it's digital controls only, so again might not be ideal in a cab. It is good fun though.

I found this list of Saturn games: http://madroms.satakore.com/db/saturn_complete_database.htm

supposedly in the header on each disc it lists the compatible periferials and the "S" perf type is the official saturn Steering wheel, so I went through and found all of the games with that designation.

I also noted when games supported some kind of networking or linking for multiplayer (there are only 2 or 3). There are a number of games here that aren't on the list above, also only certain region variants of some games support the wheel, where I noticed this I noted it.

Some games might only support the wheel for certain modes... For instance Demo Discs are listed here that have a game demo that supports the wheel and many other demos that don't. Similarly Games like Die Hard Trilogy propbably only support it during driving modes in the game.

If I can find good system level info on wheel compatibility for other systems I'll create a similar list.

BadMouth,

I'd'like to suggest to add a link for each game listed in this post to one (or several) working configuration file to handle correctly wheels.
As it took me some times to configure correctly my wheel with different emulator... And also because many people use Logitech Wheel, I believe that it would be great to have the configuration files available directly from this post.

I start with Supermodel and G25/G27 config file : here

Just a quick note.   I just realized that you can download genre based XML's for HyperSpin from the online HyperList app.

http://hyperlist.hyperspin-fe.com/

Find the emulator in the list, click the genre button (if using chrome, accept the security warning...), and download a pre-formated driving list XML.

Its not perfect, but its pretty dang quick....

Here is gameplay footage of most of the MAME games that benefit from a 270 degree wheel:

Anyone setup the PC version of "Blur" in their cab. seems like it'd be a great arcade-style racer. I'm curious how good the FFB is and if it supports local network linking

It's not much, but here's something: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CibNsBtPfhpy9veh8AajBJqMT4RBaxU0V4xsNTY_y4Q/edit#gid=0
You may have to click on a cell to get the tabs to show up.
The PC tab is a short list of games we've tested.  There is also a "PC long" tab with over 1,000 pc driving games, but they haven't been tested out to see how well they work with a wheel.  This is from a few years ago, so games from the past few years aren't listed.
