Notre Dame build - Complete.
« on: October 12, 2014, 09:16:09 pm »
My 1SG asked me to build a machine for him and his kids. They are huge Notre Dame fans and even tho I'm a diehard Auburn fan I consented to do the build being as how he's my partner in crime.

It's a straight forward 6 button fighter cab running a PC with a 27" crt. The donor cab had quite a bit of damage and was a conversion of a conversion so I salvaged what I could, traded up on the monitor, and altered the profile quite a bit to reduce the size and lose some bad wood.

At this point I need to do the art and get it pieced together. I've got plenty of time tho as it's a Xmas deadline and I'm about a day from complete once the art is printed.

This is where I'm sticking the art.

Marquee cleaned up a bit.  Inspiration from Bally's Football obviously.

Control Panel, it's a wrap around so the Fighting Irish bit will end up on the front facing bit.

@Le Chuck

Do you owe him any pranks?  Now would be as good time of a time as any!  It seems like everyone had a rivalry with Notre Dame at one point or another.  How about a Michigan Wolverine spread instead?

I've never been a fan of non-arcade themed cabs, but I do have to say, Charles, that that's one fine looking marquee.

Of course I owe him pranks.  He makes my life hell ;)

I'm thinking that the sideart might get some special treatment.  I'll see what I can tuck in.

Thanks broseph!  Post above updated with the CP.  White buttons and black bat tops, very vanilla but it'll be a nice clean look.  Still trying to decide how I want to do the admin button bank  (5 buttons, 2 coin, 2 start, enter/exit).

Michigan fans don't even want a Michigan-themed cab this season.

These days it's all about the backdoor stenciling.  I demand that you place this on it:

First cut at Sideart is up.  The player images are from a this year's football prospectus, split apart, and heavily altered.  Thoughts?

Im not a big fan of 'filters' but the players look sharp.  Gives it an atari game box artwork feel to it.  I almost feel like you need something in the black area to tie it to the players.  It looks like you gave up halfway through.  Or make the players bigger with the blue, gold, white, and black as accents.

Maybe throw the ND down on the black area? Or how about something that looks like this banner:

Thanks for the feedback, gang.  The art covering just half the side is mostly an economical choice, trying to get the most I can out of not a lot of dough on this one.  Personally I think it looks okay but I definitely don't want it to look "half finished" so I'll take a glance.

I think the bezel might be a good place to get the national champ history listed out, I'll play with it and see what I can come up with.  Just a thin runner across the glass listing the years with the ND logo in center might look good.

Monitor, PC, sound system, admin buttons all installed.  A new CP overlay is inbound I forgot to add a skirt to the one I printed and the edge was unclean.  Fine for my buddy but it bothered me so I yanked it.  Once it's in I'll wire the controls and stick a fork in this one.

I hear ya, it's not my cup of tea - if anything it should be Auburn themed ;)  All taste in football aside I really like how it is coming together, The bottom is all chalkboard, a request from my 1SG so his kids can draw on it, it adds a nice slate look and makes the t-molding pop in person.

The project is complete.  Very relaxed build, no pressure, worked on it catch as catch can, pretty easy.  Art is from Souldraw, first time using them and no issues.  The adhesive could be better but it works.  Just do good surface prep.

I moved the admin and player/coin buttons down onto the front panel so I could have a cleaner CP.  Middle knob is volume, ran an extension from a cheapo amp from Amazon.  Just desoldered the pot and wired it out.

I was pleased with the glow on the marquee since it's just adhesive vinyl over scratched up plexi.  The FE is MALA with a simple ND themed layout.

CP is simple and looks pretty sharp I think.  Nothing fancy, I haven't done exposed bolts and dust washers up top in about ten years but thought this was the type of build for it and I think it looks sharp.

My wife likes it so I know it isn't hideous and my buddy approves so everything is good.  He'll pick it up just before Christmas and surprise the kids with it.  Should be a great Christmas for them!

I have to admit, I'm neither a fan of these huge cabs nor of American Football, but this does look really cool. The pinstripes do it for me.

Soo, any chance of posting this in the I completed my project! I posted a pic and a link to my project thread sticky ?

I forgot to do the wrap up update on this and I totally failed to take pictures of the kids going ballistic but I think my buddy took some so i'll see if I can snag a few to post.

On the 22nd of DEC, a dreary ass day, my 1SG arrives in the morning and I show him how to power-up/choose/exit/power-down the machine.  We get it loaded without issue despite this being possibly the heaviest cabinet I've built.  Not sure is Fieldhouse was more or not, I loaded that one alone tho and almost died, this was much better.

Once it was delivered and plugged in the kids (9 and 6) played for 12 hours straight before being yanked off.  A few weeks on location it still gets daily use and is a bargaining chip for homework.  The lady of the household has come full circle on the arcade idea (she was not pro when I started the build) and now she wants me to do a full sitdown racer to go next to it and they are shopping parts and cabs.  It's a lot of fun seeing how much they enjoy it and the cab has been thus far hassle free.
