are there any limitations to using an external powered usb hub?
TopJimmyCooks:
I don't know the technical reasons for this, but for some reason, the aimtraks work better if plugged into the motherboard usb ports (lowest numbered) rather than a hub. the light bar doesn't matter. Also, as yotsuya noted do not unplug them no way no how. even if the pc is off. I'm not kidding.

Ok, maybe I'll leave them plugged in the other mobo slots and put the gp-wizs and led-wizs on the external. I'm using a laptop so I'm limited on USB ports, only have 3.

Is there some kind of threshold that a USB can hit concerning how much data is going through it? I would imagine that just having 2 keyboards and 2 lightguns isnt hitting any data transfer threshold, but just asking.

I have always avoided loading up devices on a USB port, but when USB came out it was touted as a serial bus with a device limit of 256. So TECHNICALLY you can put 256 devices on ONE USB port. The problem becomes one of power. Most USB devices require power from the USB port, and even a powered USB hub may not be able to supply all the needs of the devices connected.
My recent experience with a hub and controllers and light guns is that they are NOT well suited for it and cause all kinds of issues. If you have to get one, don't skimp.. there is a difference between the $50 ones and the $10 ones..
