Nexus Pin
« on: July 17, 2014, 02:24:02 pm »
Thought I would share this project that I have been meaning to start for some time, an android powered micro pin.
A nexus 7 will be the main component with a second 5" screen driven with a spare raspberryPi
It is not going to be anything particularly original or complicated and most importantly not expensive.
I say not expensive just because I already have all the parts, the only cost should be artwork printing.

The nexus seven will not live in this enclosure full time, think of it more as an Icade and the Pi may get used elsewhere in the future, spare playfield and backbox facades will be printed for when on display.

The Pi already has an XBMC install on it and the Nexus is set up as a remote for this so really I do not have to mess with any software, the backbox vid can be changed from the tablet.
I am sure some clever fellow could produce an app for this, but for my usage this method is fine.

A ZD encoder with the end of an OTG cable spliced onto the end works fine with every game tried so far once mapped with an app named Gamekeyboard.

Next up, make some cardboard mock ups to decide the final proportions, and decide if I will bother with legs or not?.

Hey there mate!

I was planning to do exactly the same kind of project after my full size MAME Cabinet.  Check on the play store for an app called tincore key mapper.  With a rooted tablet you can assign key presses to touch actions on the screen (even swipe gestures).

I'll be following your progress and good luck my friend!

Hello yourself!.
Tincore yeah I know it well - messed with it for about 40mins, gave up, then tried Gamekeyboard and had what I wanted in about 2mins :) .

Don`t look on this as being any type of well thought out serious project, I see it as just a quick casual fun little build.
Not going to invest too much effort in side-art either think I will use one of stuzza`s offerings from VPforums.....

So the weather has been far too good to be inside, but I have got some work done on this.

Found an image on deviantart that I like for side art and just used that as is without changing anything, just made some back box art to match.

And the shell itself is starting to take shape.

Just need to wait for the printing to arrive, and decide if I want to make a DMD panel or just use an image on the screen?.

So the weather turned crappy here today, so I picked this up again and its nearly complete :) .
Need to redo the backbox bezel and I am not 100% happy with the lockbar and siderails but other than that its turned out better than expected.

Will try to throw together a decent video of it in play, butfor now here are some pics.....
