Need help with a Galaxian/Galaga Cabinet restore!
« on: July 13, 2014, 12:04:46 pm »

Okay, I bought what I thought was a Galaga machine at what I can only describe as an arcade junkyard here in Montgomery. I only paid $50 for it, but it was obviously not working. At first I thought that I would MAME it, but now after looking around around, I realized that I wanted to make it original again. So after looking into this, I discovered that I had not a Galaga cabinet, but a Galaxian one that had been converted to a Galaga one. What tipped me off was the envelope that I found in the bottom last night with all these electrical diagrams for Galaxian, that the cabinet was made in 1979, the overlay is Galaxian, and it had green T-molding.

Here is the album of Pics that I took last night:

http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Skywarp_TPK/library/Arcade

So, now I am at an impasse, as I don't really know where to go from here. Would it be a tragedy to fully convert this into a Galaga machine? Should I 60 and 1 it? Just gut it all out and throw a MAME PC in it? Or should I restore it to the original Galaxian?

The truth is, that this is my first project, and I couldn't even tell you what is missing in it. I am assuming that the PCB is missing, as that one connector in the photo that I am holding looks like it would plug into it. So please, take a look at the album, and give me some advice on how to move forward with this project.

Thanks!

1.)Restore the cabinet to Galaxian.
2.)Mame it to play only vertical oriented games with 1 button
3.)Mod control panel with a http://www.ultimarc.com/servostik.html
4.)Config Frontend that only displays vertical games with 1 button
5.)?
6.)Profit

Well, the thing is, it seems to be missing a lot of components. Any idea on where I can acquire them?

I visually restored my first galaga to look 100% like a galaga. BUt since the boards were toast I wired it for jamma and put a 60 in 1 in it.

To me, Galaga is a much better game than Galaxian, so worst case, make it a Galaga

Unless you really, really want to hunt for Galaxian parts, see above.

Well, I can find the marque and the control panel on Ebay. So that would leave the PCB, possibly coin mechanical parts, and put a new power supply.

If the monitor doesn't work, I could replace it or fix it's boards. I saw a youtube video with a guy that put in a cap kit as well as a couple more parts into a Galaxian monitor.

I am a bit of a novice at this, so what else am I missing?

well, even if you dont go 60 in 1, its better to use a switching power supply in a Galaga (conversion is super easy to do) instead of the old power supply. If you do go 60 in 1, the monitor can be replaced with a PC monitor (CRT or LCD) which while less authentic, is much easier for a novice.

I know you say its not working, are you powering it up with the back door off? There is an interlock power switch there (usually white) just pull it out if the door is off and it'll allow the game to power up.

its the switch half way up on the right:

Also, your bezel is Galaxian and not Galaga

Well, unless it is packed in with the monitor's control boards, It doesn't have a main game board in it. So unless I am mistaken, I can't test the switch or the power without it.

Here is a question for you folks. Will the PCB from the Cocktail version of Galaxian work in the upright? I found a tested working one for about $100, and that is really tempting to get, but I would like to know if it would work first.

Thanks!

Ok, I found this Marque off of Ebay, and its on its way!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Galaxian-Marquee-/291189619119?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=41rPPVewug4rdpSHzbjL5Fk3HFo%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

$22.50 shipped for the Original Marque seems like a good deal to me! I might have to replace it one day with a new one, but for now, I think it should work and give the cabinet that aged survivor look to it.

Well, I bought this PCB off of Ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Working-GALXLIAN-Non-Jamma-PCB-w-Manual-International-Shipping/121372706550?_trksid=p5713.c100041.m2061&_trkparms=aid%3D333008%26algo%3DRIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D23390%26meid%3D8332205415805069558%26pid%3D100041%26prg%3D9467%26rkt%3D8%26

Guaranteed to work, and its about half of the next cheapest one online.

So now I have the PCB on the way, what would you guys recommend to replace the power supply and power cord with?

Also, what should I start checking on this monitor to see if it is functional?

Not to sure whether this should be in Projects or still in restoration, but here is a look at the old power supply.

Should I try to see if it works still or just replace it with a new one?

Like I said, I am a n00b at this. :) That is just a picture of the area where the cord connects to and there are a bunch of fuses around it. Is it missing something else?

So, from you are saying, unless its in this picture somewhere, It's missing the power supply:

It should look something like this right?:

the picture looks like the back of the monitor, the neck board at the end of the tube and the chassis to the "right"

That is a Galaga power supply. If Galaxian used the same one, then yeah that's what you look for. I pulled my Galaga PS and put in a regular switching power supply.

Awesome. Going back and looking at your cabinet, I can see it sitting in there now. Anything I need to look for in when selecting a new Power Supply?

For Example, I found these two are very common on Ebay:

#1 16 AMP

#2 15 AMP

Also, I can get an Galaxian Power Supply Conversion Kit from http://www.arcadeshop.com, but I am not too sure if that includes the power supply or just the cable that connects the power supply to the card, which i the picture looks like some kind of adapter.

Id be more inclined to get a Galaxian to Jamma adapter, and wire the cab for JAMMA with a 15A switching power supply.   Ive restored a Galaga, but not a Galaxian, so I'd hate to lead yuo down the wrong path.  I'd suggest doing as much research as you can BEFORE buying a bunch of parts.  Clean out the cab as best you can and take some well lit pictures, it'll help us see what is and more importantly what ISNT in there.

Hmmn, that sounds cool to me. Arcadeshop has the adapter too, so I can get that there along with the kit. However, you are correct about the cabinet and photos. I will try to get some work done on it tonight, take some pics with something other than my iPad, and maybe we can see what's missing. :)

I also intend on going back to the Arcade Graveyard tomorrow to see if I can get the other Galaxian cabinet for some spare parts (ie Control panel).

Here is something unusual:

Its a rebuild of a Galaxian cabinet. The cabinet works, but I don't see where the power supply is, but apparently its working.

One more question for now:

Malenko

What did you use to remove the black paint off of your Mortal Kombat cabinet? I thought that I might try it on the sides of this one to see if i can get the black paint to come off.

What remover did you use on the paint?

I used kleen paint stripper, the 30 minute kind. I spread it on, then scraped it off about 10 minutes later. That's enough to get the top layer off without damaging the art.
Then I used this stuff:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Motsenbockers-22-oz-Latex-Based-Paint-Remover-Lift-Off-5-413-01/100047250

basically spray it on, then scrape it off. The trick I invented was to spray it on, then lay either paper towels or shop towels on it, then spray them. Let it sit for 30 to 45 minutes, then scrape, then wipe with the paper towels (thats why you see paper towels on the cab in some of the pictures) I came up with that technique about 5 years ago when removing the paint from my KI cab: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,88688.0.html

Awesome! I got the stuff from Home Depot, and I will try to start tonight or tomorrow night! I found this link that might hint at what's going on with the cabinet's power supply:

I cleaned up the inside a bit and photographed the inside of the cabinet to show what is going on. I used a floor lamp for some more lighting, and my PaS camera with flash on to get the pics this time instead of my iPad:

so here's whats going on, and this should be a huge help.

the 3rd pic your posted showed where the power board was cut.  I believe that Galaxian and Galaga used the same power supply, so you should be able to google "galaga switching power supply conversion" and get an idea on how to fix it. good news is the edge connector for Galaxian is still in there (might be galaga, so check the pin outs on both games and see if they match up) so after you put in either a new galaxian power supply, or convert to a switching one, you should be pretty good to go, that is, assuming the monitor is good.

I just got back in from trying the paint removal trick. I laid down the thinner, and waited the ten minutes and started scraping.  It had a degree of success. The good news is that most of the black paint came off. The bad news, most of the underlying original paint came off as well. lol. It now has the artwork outline on it giving it a coloring book/sketch effect to it.  I kind of like it!  I have it sprayed down now with the paper towels sprayed on top of it. another 15-30 minutes, and I will go back and check on it again.

Well, I had a bit more luck in this stage.

Instead of scraping, I used a 120 grit sponge that I picked up in Home Depot today, and it seem to do a good job of removing the black paint without damaging the color underneath. There still is a bit more on this side, but I am done for the night, and I will pick it back up again tomorrow.

There are a couple things I can try to improve the other side:

1. Use a ton more Kleen Thinner. I thought that I put a good amount on, but perhaps I need to make the entire thing bubble up.

2. Wait longer for the Kleen. I waited a good 10-12 minutes after I finished applying it to start scraping. I might need to wait the full 30.

3. Use just the Lift Off Spray.

4. Use the sponge instead of the scraper.

Then again, with the age of the cabinet, and the fact that paint has probably been on there for 20 - 25 years, It could be that this is as good as it will get.

You can use just the spray but it takes longer.  You have to put a pretty thick layer of the gel on for it to work. If you wait the full 30 minutes it'll start to eat the vinyl. I do the stripping in 1 - 2 foot sections at a time.

so here's whats going on, and this should be a huge help.

the 3rd pic your posted showed where the power board was cut.

Looking for Pinout information, if they did rewire this for Galaga, then the pin outs are wrong on it.

https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=Pac.html
https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=Galaga.html

Pacman, Ms Pacman, and Galaxian use the same Pinout, but for Galaga, it looks like they changed it up a bit. I will just have to check the board when it gets here vs the connector. I might have to rewire the whole cabinet to JAMMA after all.

And I just got back from the Arcade graveyard again. Sadly all of the cabinets there except for the other Galaxian cabinet were generics. Even the Popeye and Donkey Kong were KOs or generics. The other Galaxian cab was in worse shape than I thought, as it was heavily modified and looked like it had been converted over to Galaga as well. It had a newer style power supply, a 25" monitor to replace to original, and a Galaga control panel. I was really hoping that the two Popeyes and the DK cabinets were legit, as I wanted to make a Wreck It Ralph MAME cabinet. At this point I don't know if I will go back to the graveyard until I get finished with this project. Then I will just grab a cabinet to make into a 60in1.

I did manage to get a Coin bucket for $1 that cleaned up rather nicely.

Being more cautious on the second side, I applied just the lift off spray this time. That being said, I did buy some different thinner just in case the lift off doesn't work.

I waited about an hour, but it didn't get much off by itself. The spots were it was rippling it seem to be working well.  So I applied another coat, and now I am waiting for it to tkae effect before trying to remove any more paint.

Ok, I switched to the plastic scraper, and just used the lay off, as I think that I had less paint on mine cabinet and it was flaky anyways.  I got much better results!

This time the color preserved almost perfectly! I am being very patient and only lightly scraping the areas that are bubbled up, and that seems to be the key. I sprayed it again and I am leaving it overnight, and hopefully tomorrow I can finish that side!

So digging some more I found this thread where people were talking about converting Galaxian to a switching power supply:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=33794

They said it was pretty much identical to the Pac Man/Ms Pacman board and you can use that method to convert it. So I stumbled upon Bob Roberts page about that:

Ive never stripped an entire cab side at once, I usually do 3 foot x 3 foot sections.  Leaving the spray on too long will make it evaporate, the paper towels help drastically slow down the evaporation so that it can strip the paint better.

To be more precise on how I strip cabs:

I test a small corner, usually behind the CP with a small glob of the thicker gel stripper (the 30 minute kind)
after 10 minutes I use a small putty knife to scrape away the paint.
if no paint comes up, I reapply the gel stripper and let it go another 10
if the majority of the paint comes up , and the art under IS damaged I dont use the gel and just use the spray bottle stripper
if the majority of the paint comes up , and the art under ISNT damaged ,  I gel up a 1 to 2 foot wide square.
I continue to work in 1 to 2 foot sections trying to get the majority of the paint off with the gel stripper
once the entire side is mostly removed, like this:

then I use the spray bottle stuff and paper towels to clean off the remaining paint. like so:

spray a section with a generous amount of the bottle spray, lay paper towels down, then spray them too.
after a little more scraping (if need be) I just wipe with paper towels.

Sorry for the mini thread jack :)

now as for wiring.........
I've only even done the switching power supply conversion for Galaga so I dont want to lead you down the wrong path destroying the boards or anything.

I figured that the first side outcome was due to my impatience, that the process needed to be done more cautiously and in sections. I will try your method tonight on the rest of the side to see how that works, as well as the front kick plate.

As for that wiring, I found out that the boards are pretty similar , but there is a slight difference between Galaga and Galaxian. I found a Galaxian power supply kit on Arcade Shop, and I plan on getting that and using it to connect to the board when it gets here next week.

So I have been looking into what the little PCB does, and it says that it is a Filter PC.  So please forgive my N00b question, but does that mean it connects to the power supply or the transformers?

is the filter PCB the one that goes on top of the galaxian board that the wiring hooks into?  if so, the best place for it is the trash.

just look up how many people fixed their MsPacman cabs and the like by removing that. You just slide the main PCB into the connector on the bottom of the filter board.

the filter board is used to filter any noise out >a/c< and or >over-sync<,
if u can remove it with out seeing >wavie's in the game once running<?,
then leave it out..if u see wavie's then just use the end that hook's to the video side of it
bypass the main dc filtering,do it all the time..

Well, I cleaned the boards, and tried to get the second side finished tonight. Sadly, the lift off spray ran out, and wasn't too effective in places. I did get a bit off the black off with the new paint thinner(this time I got the paste), but even doing it slowly a section at a time, it was still pulling off the color with the black. :( I have it on it's back now, and I will try to pick up some more spray tomorrow for the front.  Sadly, home depot was out Thursday night when I went back for more then. I will have to go to the other one close to work on lunch break tomorrow.

I also manged to get the control panel off and clean behind it. Then I carefully pulled out the bezel and cleaned it and the monitor screen beneath it. You need to be careful when cleaning the back of the bezel, as that artwork will want to flake off.  I also put in two LED bulbs into the Marque light sockets, and put the marque on!

It is starting to look like an arcade machine now! :)

Now that I get to the final part, I have seemed to have mastered the art of paint removal!

Using just lift off, and a ton of it,  I slowly, but surely got each section done, and now it looks like this!

It turns out that any of the paint thinner is just too strong for  this cabinet and its ancient black paint job. Now that it is off, you can see that the cabinet  has some damage on the bottom corner, but when I eventually replace all of the vinyl, I will take care of that.

Over all the cabinet is looking sweet now!

I have disconnected the old power cord. Now I just got to figure out what is going on with the connector and all of those loose wires. I am assuming that they went to a power supply that is now missing.

Also, If I am following the idea correctly, the new power cord should connect directly to the new switching power supply. Please let me know if this is correct or not!

yeah thats the correct way. basically you bring in the AC , fuse it and split it, so 1 part goes to the isolation transformer for the monitor, and the other part goes to the switching power supply.

Something that has me a little puzzled is that the ground from the power cord goes into the AC Filter, and then that is it. Shouldn't it go to the switching power supply?

Quote from: from that page
One piece of green 18 gauge wire connected from screw #2 to screw #1 will earth ground your switcher.

You should run green white and black to the switching power supply, they simply aren't screwing it into the earth ground terminal, but to the cage of the power supply. Its perfectly acceptable to do that. You probably already know this, but AC wiring has Black (Live) White (neutral) and Green ( earth ground) ; green can also sometimes be just bare copper.  I feel the need to stress that BLACK IS NOT GROUND IN AC WIRING, cause I don't want you to get zapped. So when you are wiring the switching, the AC wires are all grouped together at the bottom if you do it the traditional way.

EDIT: adding this picture from that site, they have an Earth ground/ Field ground show in the last illustration:

A combination of preference and that some switching supplies may not have come with a field ground terminal. Personally, if the FG is there, I'd use it.

Well, rather than attempt to wire everything up tonight, I thought that it would be a crime for  me not to use all that extra lift off spray that I got. So I put the cabinet back on its side, and used my refined technique again on the side with some color left on it. I had pretty good results, if I do say so myself.

Here is a before Pic:

And here it is after I finished tonight:

I was able to remove quite a bit of black from it with a couple more passes of Lift off. The rest of the black can just stay there until I am ready to replace all the vinyl.

So my question now is, what about the wiring? It has an original AC Filter, two transformers, several sets of fuses, and a ton of wiring going everywhere! Should I pull it all out and start over from scratch, minus the cut offs, Marque light wiring, speakers wiring, and controls wiring?  Or can I just remove the transformer that was going to the old power supply, and then remove the excess wiring that use to connect the older power supply to the Main board?

I have no clue which way to go here. The latter would probably be the least amount of work, but I am leaning toward the former as it seems like the right option to take. I am no expert on this, but it seems like there are a lot of extra wires here! Here are some pics for you to look at to see what I mean.

Welp, Id start with just removing what ever went to the old power supply first. The wiring in there is very tidy so I wouldnt want to mess with it too much.   If you're gonna just rewire the whole thing, you should have just gotten a JAMMA loom and went from there (and a JAMMA to Galaxian adatper if you didnt want to run a 60 in 1)

Hmmn, then I should probably remove the circled transformer, and the wires coming out of it, as I believe it went to the original power supply. I believe that is where it feeds into out of the AC Filter. Also should remove the wires coming out of the old harness as well since I have the adapter card that comes from the new switching power supply.

If you notice the green circled cord, it looks like they ran the ground to that, and at the same input spot, connected another wire to run the ground to the rest of the machine. However, I still need to get in there and look around a little more. I probably will end up breaking up those nice neat wire bundles to follow all the various wires to see what is going on.

So here is a n00b question. If the connector that is in the cabinet is for Galaga, can I disconnect it and rewire for Galaxian or would I need to find a new connector?

just find the pin out differences and see what needs rewired.  The more you post about this the more I think you should have just went JAMMA with a 60 in 1

lol. Yeah, I have a lot of n00b questions.

As for the 60 in 1, if the board I bought doesn't work, then that is probably what I will do. I just wanted to try to restore this one to its original condition first.

Using the previously linked pin out pages:

https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=Galaga.html
https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=pinout&page=Pac.html

It looks like I should be able to trace the wires back to see if the game is setup for Galaga(Most likely) or not. And then re-solder the wires to the appropriate spots on the connector for Galaxian.

So here is my progress for the evening.

Removed the original Power supply. I found out that Galaxian, Pacman, and Ms Pacman(?) get their power directly from that one and the board converts it, hence no separate power supply board. Anyways, I removed it, and tried to remove all the dangling loose wires, and let me tell you something, its a mess on that power board.  Look in the top right corner, and tell me what this does:

I am not an expert, but that doesn't look that safe to me.

However, I decided to just for the moment mount the PCB back into the cabinet.

I get it hanging there, and lol and behold, that connector doesn't fit! it is only an 18 Pin X 2 connector where as Galaxian and Galaga use 22 Pin X 2!  I thought, "is this JAMMA?" Turns out no, it's not.  its some sort of edge connector I guess. Take a look:

I have a new connector ordered, and hopefully I will have it sometime this coming week.

Also, can anyone tell me what the name of this connector is? I need to get one for the new power cable to plug into the existing setup.

EDIT: adding this picture from that site, they have an Earth ground/ Field ground show in the last illustration:

So, here is a question about the power distribution block. Is it just a splitter or does it do something else? I can't seem to find one online that works for the 18 gauge wire, and I was just wondering if I could just split it off from the AC Filter to the three components?(Lights, Power supply, and Isolation Transformer)

Its just a power splitter.  Why cant you cut back the existing connector and just splice the wires?

Cool! One less part to buy!

Quote

Well, I can and probably will just splice in the new cord, but it would have been easier and cleaner looking to get a new connector. I am wondering whether or not to take out the connector and just splice the new cable directly to the line leading to the fuse and AC Filter.

Wish I had seen this post before now... Or someone else who has a Galaxian or Pac did. The power supply for the Galaxian/Pac boards are on the PCBs themselves. They have voltage regulators that take the power directly from the transformer, that sends 7 and 12VAC that it looks like you might have removed. It looks to me like the only thing you needed was a new wiring harness or just to have rebuilt the other one... Using a switching power supply will work though.... On another note, Galaxian sure is a fun game. Your better off playing Galaxian on a true Galaxian than the 60in one. I have both and the sounds are off on the 60in1.

Yeah, I found that out right after my new Switching power supply arrived, but after 35 years, the old supply might have been bad. Rather than test it and try to use it, I just pulled it out. I'll keep it around, but having the switching supply seems like a good idea. If nothing else, I need to rewire the board for the 22 pin connector, as you see what they did down there. Any idea why they had an 18 pin connector? It was a Galaxian machine converted to Galaga, and they both use the same connector.   It's a bit of a rat nest on the power board, with some questionable wiring. I still have no idea what that thing in the corner is doing, so that is getting removed too. I am just going to build that simplified version off of Bob Roberts website, and use that for the cabinet.

I like the idea of a 60 in 1, but I am going to try to get it original, because everyone keeps saying how the ROMs in MAME and the 60in 1 are slightly off.

off the top of my head the only major games that used 18/36 pin headers were made by konami, tons of bootlegs used them too.  As for the 60 in 1s , I can tell the difference, no one else who has played (at my house) can. Also, its good enough for me.

It's been a while since I looked inside my Galaxian, so that thing in the corner could be some weird hack, but for some reason I'm thinking it has something to do with the coin door wiring. I'll check mine tonight when I get a chance. It wouldn't surprise me if this game has been hacked up to run an untold number of games, which would explain the 18pin connector. You know if it's been hacked up so severely and you can't figure out the wiring, a pac-man wiring harness would work. You just have a difference in how the audio is wired, but the pac man wiring harnesses are probably easier to find.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised with this old cabinet if it did have a bunch of other games in it at one point or another.

Well, the new connector should be here tomorrow, so I should be able to disconnect the old connector and just resolder the control lines to the new connector. I just have to hunt down which ones go where.

Looks like I should get the Connector tonight, so I will be working on wiring that tonight. Rather than try to solder the lines inside the cabinet, I think that I will solder them outside the cabinet with some extra wiring and just connect that to the wiring in the cabinet. Should make it a lot easier than trying to work in that small space. I am kind of excited, as I really want to know if the board that I bought works or not. Also, this should allow me to test out the monitor as well. Those are two things that I have no idea on if they will work or not.

J-V according to the pinout example, but not on the connector itself.

Speaking of Pin out examples, I have some serious need of knowing which wire is what.

Like what is Table mode and where does it come from? Is that something, like the Player 2 controls(fire, left, and right), that I leave empty?

Also, which of the 5 wires coming out of the monitor are which? I can tell you which one is the power cable, but the other 5 little wires(Red, Green, Blue, Sync, and Ground) are a mystery. I assume that it is the original monitor if that helps.

So I found out which wires coming from the Monitor are what, so tonight I should be able to get it mostly wired up if not completely so! Here's hoping that the monitor, board, and fuses still work!

Well, I got the wire harness all hooked up.  No pics of that until I can put some wire ties on the cables to keep them from looking so rat nesty. I was trying to hook up the ac filter to the new 6 position dual row terminal strip that I got from Home Depot. They told me that it would work quite well for a splitter, but when I touched the multimeter to the FG and the hot, it tripped a GCFI outlet across the room! Fortunately, I didn't have it hooked up any further than the terminal, so nothing could have got to the board or power supply.

So anyone have any tips for this stage? I could definitely use some!

I took the night off last night, but I plan on getting back to it tonight! I need to rewire the lines coming off of the AC Filter to use thicker wire, which I need to pick up from Home depot tonight. Also, I am going to do away with that terminal, as I am pretty sure that it doesn't do what I was told it does, and therefore can't be used for my project. I think I am just going to splice the wires together and just do it that way. I also might get a better multimeter, as the one that I was given is as about as user friendly as a rabid wolverine.

Sweet! That is a great price for the set too! I I can get the machine working, I will have to order a set of those to put on it!

I think that your advice in the beginning might have been the best route to have gone, but at this point, I am dedicated to restoring it.  lol. I would love to have a Galaga machine, but I am going to go for a Galaxian on this one, provided the PCB I bought still works. If not, I am just going to gut the cabinet, and install a Jamma Kit with a built in Power supply, through a 60 in 1 in there, and mount a spare LCD monitor in it. I might end up sanding it, painting black, swapping out the marque and putting some custom graphics on it too, but that is a decision to be made after I try to restore it first. :)

Okay! Everything is wired up, and I plugged it in, and voila!

It came on!

The Good news is that the tube powered on, but its a bit dim. The Lights came on, and look awesome behind that marque! The Game powered on, and its on free play at the title screen, with stars in the background.

The bad news is that the game doesn't respond to the buttons and joystick movement. I checked the plugs, and they look like they should be working quite well. Also, I am getting no sound. I tried switching the wires around at the speaker, thinking that I got them swapped around, but that didn't affect anything.

I could seriously use some input here fellas(or ladies if there are any around)!

Here is a pic of my rats nest!

So I checked the pinouts, and everything is as it should be.  Still, no response from any of the controls and all I get is black and white colors.  I did figure out why I had no sound, the volume was turned all the way down on the board. I adjusted that and now I get loud and clear static.  Am I using a bad pinout or is my board just bad?

I checked those too, right where they come out of the power supply. I got 5 coming out of the 5 volts, and 13 coming out of the 12.

Good idea!

So two of the 4 12v  connections wasn't showing up at the board connection. I assumed that the adapter was splitting the two wires coming in to the 4 spots, and apparently it wasn't. I just ran two more wires from the power supply to the connector and I got some progress!

We have some color and some enemy movement now! Also we have the ship and a demo in attract mode! Opening the coin door, I found that the credit button works, but the controls are still non-responsive. I opened the control panel and tried to manually get it to work, but nothing happened. Any idea on what to check on them?

Oh, I also got sound! Still a lot of static, but there is sound too!

Its funny how you went the Galaxian route and I went Galaga. LOL

Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I have had a lot of help, and I have done a lot of trial and error along the way.

I went the Galaxian route as I thought it sounded like a really cool idea to fully restore it. However, if I had it all to do over again, I would have just thrown a 60 in 1 in there and I would have it in my game room by now. Still, I am dedicated to trying to get this thing to work!

No progress today though, as it has been thunder storming here all day long.

So is there anywhere to order quick disconnects small enough that will attach to the connector? I really don't want to have to remove the connector and try to solder on another 12 wires while it is attached to all the wiring in the cabinet.

One of my buddies at work told me about a local electronics store, so I stopped by there yesterday and found some quick disconnects that should work for me. They might be too wide to use side by side though, I will have to try them out tonight.

So last night, I got distracted by WOW, and didn't get to do anything on the cabinet. Tonight however, I will remove the adapter and just wire the connector directly to the power supply, and see if the board works or if I am just destined to get a 60 in 1.

So, I checked the adapter, and using my multimeter, I was able to get the right power coming out of it.  I also found out that the controls were dead as I had the Player 1 ground wired into Table mode and vice versa.

So now the game works, the controls work, and the coin mechs work, yet the credit switch doesn't. lol. I think that ground might need to go to something, but the coin mechs working will due for now.  My big problem is that the entire screen is only displaying red. Anything to recommend checking on that?

check the video wires RGB ground and sync.  if you can see a stable picture that means ground and sync are probably ok. try jumping the red over to the blue connector and see if you only see blue, helps narrow down the possibilities.

I adjusted the knobs on the monitor, but that only helped a little bit. I am not getting much of a picture on the lower half of the monitor.

I am still trying to get the left control working, as the ship won't respond to going left.

So, where do I check on the monitor to see what model it is? I am assuming that it is an original monitor since the sticker is on there as well as the insert that goes between it and the bezel.

Okay, tonight I have some time to work on this, so I will finally be getting back to it!

I will try to get a good look at the monitor and see if I can find any labels or identification numbers on it. I will also see what I can see on the control board for it.

I see a lot of places to get a cap kit for this thing, but I need to find somewhere that I can get the proper flyback and a discharge tool.

discharge tool is a rubber handled flat head screw driver with a piece of wire connecting the metal part to the monitor chassis

Well, I don't see anywhere that I can actually get a flyback replacement for it. It doesn't seem to be that common of a part, as all I can find for the monitor is the cap kits. Hopefully the flyback is fine, but I was wanting to get one to be on the safe side. Now whether I can get the board out to put a cap kit on it without removing the flyback is what I am wondering now.

So I just bought this to test out how the Arcade would work with a LCD monitor.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221480387637

I figure for $9 shipped, it should be a good experiment.

That does NOT convert the signal. Only the connection. You wasted $9. To REALLY convert the signal, you need this...

So what will happen when I connect it and it doesn't convert the signal?

Nothing. Only thing that board does is change the CGA connector to a VGA connector like if you are using a PC and trying to hook up an arcade monitor to it. That's all it's good for.

That SHOULD work but it's probably got the outdated Firmware on it. That's why it's cheaper. The one from Jammaboards.com has the updated firmware that is more reliable than the original versions of the converter. If the converter has straight lines on the heat sink, it's the old version. If it has "spikes" like the one from Jammaboards, it's been updated. The newer firmware makes the converter compatible with more games and more reliable.

All right, well, I ordered one of the new ones with the spikes, and it should be here this weekend!

So what are the odds that the original Galaxian Overlay is on the control panel beneath the Galaga one? Any ideas on what I could use to remove the adhesive to see?

So here is the converter that I bought:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231329127578?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

It looks like it requires a 5v power, which is what I am assuming that the red/black cable pair is for.

I found a construction of the control panel overlay as an AI file, so I might be able to get one locally printed, instead of paying $45 shipped for one. Man, have I ever been kicking myself for letting that complete control panel slip away on eBay for $35!

Yup. Just run the red wire to the power supply's +5V and the black wire to the ground.

Well, local place wants $44 to print it, so I guess Game On Graphics will probably be my best bet for a new overlay. I am going to check tonight and see if the original is still there though.

So as afar as monitors go, I have a few options. I did find that I still have my old (circa 2000) 18" 4:3 CRT monitor, but how I am going to mount that 18" beast in there, I couldn't tell you. I have two spare LCDs as well, a 17" 16:9 LCD and a 19" 4:3 LCD. I have been told that the CRT would probably look the best in there, but I might just end up throwing the 19" LCD in there, as pretty much has the same dimensions as the original monitor and it will be a lot easier to mount. That being said, this weekend I will try and see which monitor works better with the game and converter board, and make a decision based on that.  Any input on which monitor I use?

if you use the LCD, get a scan line generator from craftymech. If you do go LCD, then it makes even less sense that you went the authentic route with the PCB.  A 60 in 1 has a Dsub15 (aka "VGA") connector and outputs VGA resolutions.

Yeah, I know, I was really hoping that I could repair the monitor. :( I much rather keep the original monitor, but it seems that the Flyback on the original monitor is going out as it is making that high pitch sound indicating that it's failing. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any replacement parts for it. All I can find is a cap kit for the 35 year old monitor.  Also, the burn in is really bad once you get past the bezels, so it might just be time to replace it. I am hoping that the 18" CRT monitor just blows me away this weekend, and I can just use that.

One thing that I have learned from this, 60 in 1 will be my friend for the next build. ;)

Well, it seems that my converter got held up after leaving San Fransisco early yesterday morning, and won't be here until Monday at the earliest. :( I am kind of miffed aobut that, as I really wanted to get this hooked up and tested today, and now I don't know when I will be able to do it.

So, I have got the part in, but last night was a gigantic thunderstorm and I had a migraine, so nothing got done on it. Maybe tonight I can get started and see how this looks on my three Monitors!

Oh, and I got a response back from Buffet! Apparently the monitor isn't worth salvaging and I need to get a replacement one. Also, he agrees with you guys on using a CRT over an LCD.

you could also try a universal chassis if you think the tube is still good.

Well, he says that the tube is different from other more "normal" tubes for monitors. Also, the tube has some serious burn in.

I am wondering how nice it will look on my old 18" CRT monitor.

Well, I have the night off so I should get to work on this! I am going to try to get the controls all wired correctly, and wire the convertor into it. Then I will disconnect the original monitor from the board as well as from power, and try out the three monitors I have and see how they work.

So I have the converter installed, and the left stick working! Here we are with the 19" 4:3 LCD in it. It looks amazing!

Occasionally, I got this Green line through the monitor, but I think that is more to do with the monitor than the connections or converter.

The pics don't do this justice!

The colors are right, its just the camera isn't that great. lol.

I had some fun playing it, and tomorrow night, I will test out the other monitors and see how they look on it!

So here is a question, the joystick tends to stick and doesn't really want to center itself. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix that? Its the old fashioned leaf style joystick if that helps any.

first off, get a miniSLG from craftymech it'll add crt style scan lines to the LCD, makes a world of difference.

For the stick, try the dishwasher, remove the leafs first though.

Well, the Fiancee ended up getting the night off last night, so I spent the night with her instead of getting to work on the cabinet. Tonight I should be able to get some work done on it though!

I did get to show it off to her though, and she thought it was pretty neat once I got her to play it. She did mention the stick not centering though, so I guess that is going to be an issue I need to resolve.

Well, I compared the LCDs and I like the 19" one better. Then I tried mu CRT. I really couldn't tell that much difference.

Sure the CRT looked a little better, but every time I tried to turn it, the color would fade out on it. :(

After I tested those out, I decided to remove the original monitor and mount:

i plan on removing the mount from the monitor so I can reuse it for the LCD.

So, instead of taking the monitor off of the mount and trying to use that, I just mounted three pieces of leftover black shelving into the original holes where the mount was, and it seems to be working just fine. It isn't perfect, but it looks pretty good with the bezel and glass in it.

Here is a shot to see the front:

A long way from where I started with this:

:)

I have test the coin door mechanics, and they are working quite well.  I still have more to do on it:

New artwork all the way across
Maybe find a new CRT monitor for it
Replace the T-Molding
fix the control panel connector(This is why left doesn't work sometimes)
Get the high score save kit and install it

but in the meantime, I am going to enjoy playing it, and maybe I can get good enough to get to level 3! lol.

I have a question about T-molding. I got a replacement run for this unit when I bought he power supply kit, and I was wondering if I should wait to put it on after I eventually replace the side art or whether I can go ahead and replace the original t-molding and not have to do it again when I eventually get the new artwork?

Side art, then T molding.
Replacement side art is usually larger than the cabinet.  You center it, apply it and the either fold the excess over the edges or trim it flush.  Then you install the T molding.

Example from one of my Tempest restores:

Watch The videos from Rich at 'This Old Game' for a full art install.  He makes it look easy to do by yourself but I need a helper when I do it.  He folds the art over the edges, but I just trim it flush with the sides.

No new side art yet, but I am working on it!

I have it moved into position! I like it there and I plan on putting my next cabinet right next to it! I played some more today and managed to finally get to level 4!

That is my high score so far. Not too bad I must say! I am sure that there are a lot of people out that that can do better though.

Just won this!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Bally-Midway-Galaxian-or-Pac-Man-Arcade-Video-Game-Control-Panel-/231404198439?_trkparms=gh1g%3DI231404198439.N19.S2.M-1006.R2.TR5&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=41rPPVewug4rdpSHzbjL5Fk3HFo%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I decided to get that for now, and set it up to look vintage and worn for a while until I get a chance to do a full restore on the cabinet with new artwork. Not thrilled that it doesn't have the joystick, but the price is good and I can swap my components over to this control panel.

Errrr, I don't think he wants to ship parts from the UK to Alabama USA, especially since there are many State-side options.

Arcade Shop should have a lot of what you're looking for, and they're in Georgia.
Mike's Arcade is another good source for parts, out of Utah.

My (and many other's) number 1 source for original/NOS parts is The Real Bob Roberts. He's been around since the dawn of time, and is always a great resource for information. He's old school, and doesn't deal with modern forms of payment transactions like paypal or credit cards, check or money orders only....but his stock is massive, and his service is excellent.
Don't let the budget website fool you either, there is many gems of information there for restoration/repair/conversion projects.

It took me a while to get the joystick loose, as it had a lot of rust built up on it. Once it came loose and I was able to get the fire button off of the new Control Panel, everything swapped over nicely! The new panel had some black paint over it, but it cleaned up rather well with some liftoff.

I'd remove the buttons and stick, tape off the CPO, and give the CP a nice coat of paint.  Then do the same for the coin door. tape off the mechs, 25c, and plungers then give it the once over with paint.

If you give me the measurements of the front panel, I can make you the art to get printed.

So I fired this up last night to play a few games, as I haven't played it in a couple weeks, but nothing is happening. The only thing that is getting power is the LCD monitor, so I am guessing that I need to get some new fuses. I didn't have time last night to work on it, but I was hoping to show it off this weekend at a party. Oh well.

Glad to see you taking the time and effort returning it to it's original glory.

While it is nice work so far, I don't think you can use "original glory" with that LCD in there.
My current collection:  Arkanoid^3, Asteroids Deluxe, Centipede, Donkey Kong w/DIIK, Frenzy w/Berzerk multi, Galaga, Galaxian, Gyruss, Mappy,  Missile Command, Multi-Williams, O'Boyles Arcade (Mame), Pac-man,  Sinistar, Star Wars, Tempest, War Gods

So yeah, I should have checked the machine before I ordered the fuses. The tape holding cut off switch in came loose. Readjusted that, and it works perfectly.

Send me a 19" crt monitor that works and I will put it in there! :) Although I will say that the monitor looks amazing in there. It was a gaming monitor that I got before they all went to 16:9 ratio and it looks great in there.
