Taxi 2000 - Minipincab
« on: May 26, 2014, 01:48:16 am »
Soooo...so many inspirations i get from melons and superfrog minipincabs that i decided to begin my own minipincab now.
The idea was one of my favorite pinball of the youth - williams taxi - transformed in a  new minipincab design - that means....not like the real big pinballmachine of that -
either a new touch of an checker cab pinball. The images that follows can show you a look from that what i mean.
Some of the  features are a electrical opening controlboard - hided buttons on the front and an integrated plunger with that also too.

The wood...an 12mm MDF was bought and cuttedwith an jigsaw.... but the details need a lot of time. Backglassmonitor is now an 15'' but i think it's better to change it to an 17'' - the playfieldmonitor is 22''.
And here now the whole thing at the first big step forward... :D

A project get then to be a special one, if you must made your own special tools to solve a problem. Today I had to do on the "upper lip" and i must bend a little wood for it. A couple of years before I had the same problem for the seats of an model of an toy-circus - but that's a different story... Ok - the technique I used was likewise of "Thonet" a austrian furniture manufacturer at the art nuveau. They used steam an pressure to bend wood... I took them in a hot water...but look what I''ve done...that is what I used for them:

Then i took the wood for a little more than an hour in very hot water and used a jigsaw to make the tool.

I have a question to superfrog or melon... Did you thought about to use BAM or a Ledwiz with your Minipinball???? And if...what is your experience with it? Do you have enough spaces for them?

I didn't use Future piball but I was planed to use it.
Ps3 eye toy or even Kinect is Easy to use, but in my design it didn't fit well.

Lookin good. The only thing I wished I would have done different on my cab is too groove out the cab sides where the metal edge on the play field is mostly hidden. That way you can remove it from the back instead of removing it from the top and having to take all that stuff apart to get to the wiring

@jaharr01 I will do both....to open from the top (like a car) and from the back  ;) - better to get to the pc-part . I have so much ideas but I will do it step by step. At this moment it can be go in two ways. Every false step can destroy the good imagine of the project or it goes to be an epic one.... I do my best! Let us see....

@Generic Eric    ;D oooh Yeeeesss...of course, crazy taxi and a dreamcast section will be a big point on my to do list ;)
@jaharr01 thank you... I do my best..the wooden part is not really my best part of my profession - I am a technician and repair and proof electronic circuits ;) xray is a special part of it but this all can't help me on this project - I only will modify a few buttons/transform little pocket lamps into buttons...but you will see it by the next steps - at first the wooden part must find an end. There's so much to do.... At the playfield monitor fixation and the front and so on...  ;D

I can't wait too , but for me it is now more important to find some solutions on other places....like the lower backdoor, the selfmade buttons,  and so on.... at first I must redesign my location of the Plunger. It is to close to the playfieldmonitor therefore...what do you think, is it a bad place or its ok? From here (red) to here (yellow)...

The best would have been to keep it where it is (Red). Is it any chance to build a mechanism that avoids the playfield monitor? Like some kind of angled plunger mechanism?

:banghead: the attachment and the monitor are to close to the middle of the hole for the Plunger.... I must decide between a functionally lighted button for "launchball" or a nonilluminated fakebutton for the Plunger that are maybe to close to the monitor.... :badmood:

I get that you lose symmetry by moving it, but I think function is more important than form. So, I dont see the harm in having it lower.

Can you make a picture from the top of the cab, so I can see how much room you are talking about.
If I'm correct, you want the plunger on the left side of the right headlights and the launch button below in the orange light, or next to the plunger on the right?

You can place the plunger in the right orange light and the launch button in place where you had the plunger in mind. or do I missing something here ?

i can make this picture in 2 weeks...we have any birthdaypartys and no time to work :( ....but it was at first planned to integrated the plunger IN the "Glass" of the left headlight on the rightside.... im rethinking of this because its to less space there  and would replace it BETWEEN the yellow Button...make the headlight i would decided before, as a "start" or "launchball" button

I've read of at least one person over at vpforums that is using the integrated graphics.  I'd go ahead and give it a try and if you have problems you can always upgrade later.  I went with a Radeon R7 250E and haven't had any issues.  cost me around $70 on sale with a rebate.

Having a dedicated video card is preferred, but I think it will depend on what software you are going to run. If anything will run with onboard graphics I'm guessing it will be Visual Pinball.

To be honest, I didn't even try to run my setup without a video card, so I don't really know what performance will be like  :dunno

I picked up a used GeForce GTX460 for my build. There are plenty of these under $100 (and that's probably overpriced). I have had no problem running Visual Pinball, Future Pinball or Pinball FX2.

Keep up the good work! Your cab looks amazing so far  :applaud:

The other thing to consider is the resolution of the tables you want to run.

For higher resolution tables, onboard video may not be able to keep up.  I had to upgrade from onboard video to an Evga GeForce GT 430 card to keep the Doctor Who backglass from looking like Tom Baker's scarf.  :laugh2:

okok....i understand...i will Keep the Level high but not to expensive...is an Asus-Nvidia-GeForce-GTX750 a good choice to go with? ist not so expensive and i hope it fits well on vp/fp and emulators...?
At the moment my  piggy bank is a little bit empty and the mb desaster was a little bit unexpectedly - but now i will benefit to come to an upgrade. MB, Processor are ordered now... only a new graficcard is missing

There are some closely-numbered EVGA cards in the 700 series with a huge difference in specs.

The GTX 750 looks great (80GB/s Memory Bandwidth), but the GT 740 next to it isn't nearly as good. (28.5GB/s Memory Bandwidth)   :o

The easiest way is to check out the specs on this page then use the part number to price-check the exact model (01G-P4-2751-KR for the GTX 750 linked above) at the vendor of your choice.

You may also want to look at their 600 series cards like the GT 630 (01G-P3-2632-KR) since budget is an issue.   ;D

Sorry for that.... I would also do more and faster on the cab, but now I will build the pc system up and running well. I know, I have too less time that I need for that at the moment - sorry :(

Thanks @Superfrog...i would go a similar way with an emulator for mame and so on too. What was your way with the frontends? I use for the pinballpart PinaballX but to include a Dreamcast Emulator like Nulldc it is very hard to work with it. Which frontend is your first to wake up after an PowerON? And also to use as an Musicbox with the cabinet...it's tricky...i didnt get it which is the best way to include all

My first frontend was HyperSpin and from the menu base ( Mame / Snes/ Megadrive / Pinball ) I let start PinballX after you select the option Pinball.

Good luck

ps: Personal, I fond HyperSpin a pain in the Ass to config, I did use the latest versions.
Youtube did show me how to do some stuff  :banghead:

The front of this cab still looks amazing.  A question on the lock down bar piece.  It seems like on the sides it's a pretty big lip.  How does that feel on your hands/wrists when pressing the flipper buttons?  The way I rest my hands when playing it seems like it would get in the way.

ohh...i know it looks a little bit unusual, but ist very comfortly . The main thing about this piece of lip is there comes a controllerpart in it ;) - I would like to integrate an controller for playing "crazy taxi" or something like this with the dreamcast emulation. When it's really uncomfortly then i work on a pinballonlylockdownbar for changing... i will see - On my first design it had an spinner for Arkanoid-like-games too  ;D

Sorry, but allways too less time for this project... :( ...but i have now an eye on the controls at the lockdownbar -  i must rethink and customize all for this little size ...sidearts...puuhh....i was thinking a very long time to decide now..  None (or very small) side arts -  the most space i need for  the side "art" is to illuminate a white plexi that will be covered with the black/white  taxi Patterns ;)
