HP Thin Client
« on: May 06, 2014, 02:18:19 am »
Greetings,

I have been given a bunch of HP Thin client units.  These are the T5630W variety, so only 1GB Ram and 2GB Flash drive.  I don't think they will be worth boosting up to run windows 7 but they should be able to run Linux OK (Or so I hope).    I did try setting them up using Geexbox but it looks like there were no drivers included for the video on these boards.

So my question - Is there a Distro all setup that I could use which is compatible with the following.

Processor VIA Eden 1 GHz
Chipsets VIA VX800 north/south bridge unified chip
Memory Flash 2 GB
System Memory 1 GB (64 MB reserved for video)
Graphics VIA Chrome9 HC3 DX9 Graphics

Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

you should try a lightweight system like Lubuntu.
Checkout Distrowatch.com for more linux distributions.

Core2 duo8400 @3.6 Ghz, 4Gb of mem, Geforce 9500.
Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE, Mame, Mess, Daphne FS-Uae, Mednafen and some more.

Or just Debian with XFCE so the gui isn't a pig.

Pclinuxos lxde is a nice lightweight distro. I run the KDE version.
Also been playing with slitaz lately.
Very small and very lightweight.
But not for people completely new to Linux however the devs and a few other users are usually around to help people that post issues in the forum.

PClinuxos also has a live usb creator with persistence.
I've run it off an SD card on an old laptop & plan to run my mame cab off an SD to ide adaptor with this if I can't get Slitaz set up the way I want (which also has an option for live usb image creation.

I can check tonight if these distro's have drivers for via unichrome.
A quick google search does show ubuntu might have drivers for the video card on these thin clients.

Lubuntu is a fast and lightweight operating system. The core of the system is based on Linux and Ubuntu. I think, it will be suitable for this work.

I have a wyse wt1200le and a wyse x150se lying around. There processors are a lot less than a gig. Are they capable of usb booting such as lakka? Or should I just bin them both and go for a gig + processor and equivalent ram/storage???
I have burned an image to usb of lakka and it runs ok on the laptop I burned it from, but it doesn't load on the x150se. Is this a no goer???

You could try an older puppy Linux.  Maybe Arcade puppy if your heart so desires.

If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

You don't need a dedicated desktop at all.  I cover it in a guide here:
http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,135914.0.html

All the folks recommending Lubuntu/LXDE, Xubuntu/XFCE - you don't even need that much.  Linux+X without a desktop environment, a few scripts, and you can bypass the entire bloat of the window manager all together.  That's just window dressing you'll never see in a fullscreen frontend or emulator, so why bother with it at all?
