Lubuntu - Flashing Screen
« on: April 16, 2014, 06:23:30 pm »
Hi,

When I try to boot the latest Lubuntu live cd from usb, it gets as far as showing the mouse pointer just before the desktop would normally load but then the screen flickers/flashes without end and never finishes loading.

Anyone know how to resolve this ?

Thanks

Sounds like it doesn't like your graphics card.
I don't know Lubuntu but other linux distro's have a safe graphics option at the main menu.

you can try that.

What hardware / version of Lubuntu are you using.
14.04 has just arrived.
My cab is running Lubuntu, and doing fine for years now.

I've been trying to use the 13 version.

It's an onboard video chip.

Any idea how to boot with the safe vga option ?

Try setting NOMODESET to the boot option.

This will give you some info on it.

Thanks Louis.

It's now got a box floating around the screen saying the refresh rate is out of sync (black background).

What should I try next ?

What videochip do you have?
Try to use the latest Lubuntu (i just updated my cab to it)
Maybe you can add a dedicated videocard, it doesn't have to be expensive, in my previous setup i used a geforce 5200, which worked fine.

Not sure, it's a prebuild bartop cab.

Can you try  "ctrl-alt-F1" which should give you a black screen with a cursor.
Then type "lspci" which should give you a lot of info about your hardware, including your graphics chip.
The latest (L)ubuntu should work with almost anything if it's not too old.
