Punch-Out Bartop Custom Artwork
« on: April 15, 2014, 09:13:19 pm »
Wanted to first thank "JD Fan" & "thatpurplestuff."
They provided me with some of the files used to create my artwork.
Many thanks to them.

I'll be getting a bartop from Rick at "Gamesroom Designs Canada"
I'm excited to get started on this....so as I wait to pick it up I thought
I would start the artwork.

I'll be using the original marquee and side-art from Punch-Out, but the CPO and bezel will be custom.
I'm a lil "stuck" right now for ideas on the bezel, but I simply pulled all the elements in.

I've included the sample. Any thoughts/feedback would be welcome.

Thank you

You know what would be cool? If you could fit that second upper monitor into a bartop build. Or maybe incorperate that into the bezel. Say a Joe Shmuck VS> WhoEver on the top of the Bezel and lose the bottom border?

Perhaps something a bit more simple like this (Note used the images I already had so dimensions are different but should give you the idea of what I was thinking )

JD Fan that is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G-!-!-! ....and I thank you.
Simple and clean, I really really like it. Honestly.......can I steal that ?

The bezel that I posted above is scaled down to 100 DPI.
But it is the required size to fit the bartop I'm getting from Rick.
When I scaled it it messed with the colored lines on the DK bezel.
If I can, I'm going to try and make it where the lines dont taper in towards the bottom. So essentialy rectangle in shape, with the rounded corners. I love the characters in the cirlces also, that looks amazing. I think what I will try and do is clean up some of the horizontal lines that remain on Glass Joe (I had not noticed them prior). Then make the characters a lil bigger to fit more of the circle. More so I want it where the bottom of the fighter is not cut off, the cut off part will be hidden from the circle.

Wish me luck! And I thank you for the inspiration. I love what you did. Now if I can just do it justice and make the tweaks I want I'll be off to the races.

Feel free to use any part of it you want - If you need any help once you get going let me know and I'll see what I can do (would need a few measurements to make it accurate (ie. screen cutout dimensions, top and bottom and also left and right side dimensions for the thickness of the bezel, and actual size of the bezel) That way could set up guides in PS to ensure things are to the correct size - but looks like you have it under control from here (unless you run into problems getting the border circles straightened out) Let me know if you need some help.

Thanks again JD!
I'll probably need some help if that is ok ?
I have not got the bartop as of yet, just the bezel measurements.
But I was thinking that with the monitor set back in the cabinet all was ok. But I think perhaps your correct, it is best it get some accurate measurements.

I'm trying to think how to work this where it makes sense...........

With me having no Illustrator to work with (or experience) I think making the border might be hard. What I would like to do is mainting the look of the original, but where it does not taper in at the bottom. IE - the top and bottom the same. Does that make sense ?

If you could provide any help with that, that would be great.
I think I should be able to do the work with the circles.
But if you'd like you can even email me : vibefx@gmail.com

Pehraps the elements are seperate layers ?

I'm at work so I cant save or upload images.
But the link here shows the look I'd like the lines to have.

http://gameroomgraphics.com/custom-donkey-kong-graphic-bezel-for-the-xtension-arcade-cabinet-or-xtension-mini-arcade/

The bezel for the bartop is 13.41 VER (high) x 20.375 HOR (wide)

OK -- didn't realize you were having the monitor set back in the cabinet as that will make it less important to have exact size for the cut out (as long as it is close enough to not interfere with the view of the game screen) -- I'll put a version together today with the changes you've mentioned and upload later today in a zip package so I can include the psd version along with the various layers in case you want or need to make adjustments. The border is actuall not that hard if you just use the rectangular selection tool on a small section at the top where they are straight and then transform it (Ctrl-T) and drag the bottom center down to size and then trim as needed after applying the transform.

Will upload later today as have a few errands to run during the AM but will have some time afterwards.

That is looking great.  I wonder if there is a way to make the part that says punch out a bit more like a jumbotron?  I think that might be a cool look.

Zip file is too large to attach due to the 2MB size limit (has jpg, Png, and Psd format - Psd has the layers setup still in case you need to make adjustments ) so here is a dropbox link to the file ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/4brwcakwarxriio/PunchOutBezel.zip ) If you have trouble getting it let me know and I'll E-mail it to you.

This is what it looks like :  (NOTE : I added an extra inch to the dimensions you posted so there is a 1\2 inch grey border around the outside to allow for trimming as some printers have a hard time printing to the edge -- It can be removed if needed but figured it best to add it. Kept the rest of the bezel inside the actual dimensions you posted so it should be proper size.

Horizontal looks great.  I like that the characters are outside of the center circle.  It would be nice to see a vertical layout for a taller unit that had two monitors.

Remove or add stars from Punchout in the Instruction box Currently only in the last few letters and it looks odd,  Personally I think they should be removed. other then that nice work JD :applaud:

I shared this over at a local coin-op forum I goto (www.cgcc.ca).
I made sure I took no credit for the bezel and gave credit where credit was due.
Again JD Fan a million thank you! This project will kick ass because of your awesome contribution.

No Problem -- Here is a new link to the Final versions (I removed the stars mentioned above in the directions label (Thanks Dr. Nick for mentioning it !) - they were only in the last few letters and looked out of place) The Zip file has the psd with the layers labelled and misc unused layers deleted to reduce size - and 3 Png files ( 1 original version, 1 with flyers added to upper corners, and 1 with just the flyers in lower corners) Let me know if you find any errors that need tweaking and feel free to share them ( I've always believed the more we share the better for everyone ! )

EDIT : Guess it helps to actually post the LINK  :laugh2: ( https://www.dropbox.com/s/7aw8ggqlbqq4vhv/PunchOut%20Bezel%20Final%20Versions.zip ) -- SEE FINAL LINK POSTED A FEW POSTS DOWN !!

EDIT 2 : If you downloaded already please redownload -- I noticed the stars in the PunchOut text at top Center were also messed up so fixed them in all files and reuploaded the zip ( I don't think anyone got it yet but just in case !!

You may also want to look at the "u" in Punch at the top -- one star has some white that isn't in the others.

That's what was on the ones provided (but probably not  :laugh2: ) -- I should be able to clean them up if anyone is going to use them (I had just put them in to see what it looked like as an after thought. But if they are going to be used I'll look at them closer.

I used vector magic to make the vector versions of the Punch-Out flyers.
The results are not perfect, but I thought it gave the characters a cool look.
I suppose someone could use the Punch-Out marquee text if they had wanted.

I wanted to see if I could make one request (if not stepping out of bounds here!  :-\)

Could we see what it would look like with the other boxer in one of the top corners ? Also cut off at the waist to fit in the circle as the other two are.
Perhaps the gloves in another circle on the other side ?

If you're thinking of the bezel as a boxing ring, shouldn't the two boxers be in opposite corners?

Maybe the gloves in the third corner and a flyer or the referee in the fourth?

Today I think I'll try and find a 20" LCD on Kijiji.

JD...gotta ask........no more requests (I promise!).............in the event that I need slight modification when I get the monitor is it ok to ask ? (something simple, size wise if needed)

Today I think I'll try and find a 20" LCD on Kijiji.

JD...gotta ask........no more requests (I promise!).............in the event that I need slight modification when I get the monitor is it ok to ask ? (something simple, size wise if needed)

Good luck with the monitor and no problem with the requests (glad to help when I've got the spare time esp if it is something that might get used as it gives me some practice using the programs and helps you out at the same time  -- Just let me know what you need and I'll make the adjustments.

I love both the 4 corner versions.
I like the overall look, the balance, everything really.
I honestly cant think of anything that is missing.
I like the the one with the boxing gloves used only art from the existing cabinet and the flyers to promote it.
So it could have been something you had seen on the cabinet, taking from DK (perhaps the best known Nintendo cabinet ?) I think is awesome too.
I love that you used the instruction portion from the original CPO. Something I wanted to work into the CPO, but could not due to size.

I think really if anything were to be done to it (and I'm not asking! LOL) would be just perhaps the Punch-Out!! text as it appears on the sideart/marquee.
And perhaps a Nintendo logo somewhere. But honestly that is just nitpicking, because I really do think this looks complete, professional, polished, and it is indeed a KNOCKOUT !

EDIT - I can assure you this will be printed and used. And a project thread will be created when I start the project. Rest assured this was not done in vain!
I don't have a printer but I'm going to see if I can print the bezel out over a few pages when I get a monitor and just make sure the opening is sufficient. I think it will be. I know Rick did a bezel on his Galaga project and he just pushed the monitor near flush. I may set mine back, if needed I'll create some form of a shroud using project board.

I still think it's odd seeing more people than 2 boxers and a ref in the "ring" -- an extra pair of gloves in the remaining corner don't detract from the overall theme.  YMMV.

I agree if you look @ it like a boxing ring. I that aspect the characters in opposite corners would look cool.
But I think ALL versions JD Fan did ALL work well. I just like the balance of something in the 4 corners.

EDIT - JD Fan ,

Since you've been such an amazing help to me I'd like to leave profile feedback for you if OK. I don't know if I'd record it as a purchase or trade, as it neither, but I'd like to leave some feedback if that's OK. I'm really thrilled with these results and the generosity you've shown me. Thank you

The ref idea I agree, I like.
However there is no ref art in the same style as the other 3 boxers.

OK Since you weren't asking (and I was bored  :laugh2: ) made a few more changes (still have the older versions if you don't like some of them !) Think I got them all :  (If you like them let me know also let me know what characters\flyers you want in what corner and I'll make a png version of the ones you want and upload a new zip package with the psd and whichever png files you want. (or if you want a few changes that can be done also. ))

Wow! Now so many options it is getting hard to pick.
Do you think it would look good to use the Punch-Out marquee text with the colors as it appears on the marquee ?
As far as what is in what corner, I like the bottom as is, perhaps adding back the gloves to top left and moving the character to top right.

One of my biggest things is just wanting everything to match. IE - images came out in and around the same time. That is why I liked the 4 corner (3 characters + gloves) version best I think. All of it was art from the flyers/original cabinet art.

I don't think I would do this, but only other thing I can think of is using art from the Wii version as the art all has the same look. So Mac, King Hippo, Glass Joe, Bald Bull.

I`ve downloaded each zip posted so far, so I have all the files saved in my Punch-Out folder.

I was thinking white background still, using the marquee image : http://vectorlib.free.fr/PunchOut/
The text would have the black stroke around it, and the impact effect would be grey.

EDIT - I had not seen the revised post with the grey. I like that. I think that looks really good.

I'm going to open all these in Photoshop and try to pick.
I think I know which one I like best, but I want to see them side by side.

I sent a sample sheet to Soul Draw and was provided a quote.
My only issue is they only make straight cuts, so I'd need to cut the side art and bezel myself.

I'm waiting on a final quote from the previous printer I used as they would have everything cut.
For a few more dollars it may be the way to go.

Sorry for the lack of response as of late, super busy and no PC time.
I'm going with the 3 character/glove layout.......I love it.
I also like it with the original text you used, not the marquee text.

I sent this off for a quote, seems I'll need to cut out the center bezel by hand...........NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT !

I'm working on a nice lil print 12" x 18" using the files you provided to hang in the man cave. I'll also be doing a custom MALA layout that I will make available to all.

Thank you again JDFan

I got a quote from Soul Draw, but they only do straight cuts.
So I think I'll spend the few dollars more and use the printer I used prior.
I need to get all the files ready for print.

When I look online I realize I am such a NOVICE when it comes to Photoshop.
I know what I know and I do it well, I just know so little.

Today I'll be working with the pen tool on the bezel to create a path to  cut out the center.

Wish me luck !

I still have not finished with the artwork print preperations.
I did give it a shot, but I'll need a lil more time to complete it.
When I do get it done I will upload a zip here of everything sized (with the cutline).
Should someone wish to do a project like this the art will be available.
I'll also start a build thread and post the art in the thread.

For the cabinet I am going to go with the side art and marquee as it was on the cabinet.
The CPO is the modified one I posted in the thread, taking out the instruction panel and adding a green colored Punch-Out logo.
For the bezel (as designed by JDFan) I'm going with the bezel with character art (and boxing gloves) in each of the 4 corners.
I like the balance of the 4..........I also like the original JDFan did with the two characters and may (cost pending) print both.

I've been so busy and since I don't really know how to do the cut path on the bezel, so that is where I am slacking.

I should be getting the bartop in a week or two I suspect.
At that point I'm sure I'll find the motivation to push forward.
I still need to learn how to do create the cut parth, and get it DONE!
Over and above that all the art work is sized and ready.
I think I might need to tweak the marquee a lil....but I cant recall now.

If anyone has any tips on easily creating the cut path for the inside of the bezel I'd love to know.

I again wanted to send a HUGE thank you to JDFan for all his help with this project.
The artwork is better than I would have ever thought and NO WAY could I have done this myself.

Thank you....................................

I just wanted to share an image and report that I had the artwork printed and it is on it's way !

Sorry ! As noted prior many thanks to all who provided help with this project.
I am greatful.
I just wanted to single out JDFan for the bezel help as I'm simply blown away by the work he did.
His contribution to this project was a MASSIVE help.

But again thank you all who provided help.
