PS2 Background
Almost all PS2 can be softmodded using Free MCBOOT (Slim version SCPH-9xxxx with date codes 8c and on cannot be softmodded). Free MCBOOT uses a memory card exploit to load external applications. http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/ There a multiple methods of getting free mcboot onto your memory card and there are also communities that will add it to your memory card as long as you provide the card and postage. My second memory card slot is broken, so I cannot make a copy for you. Please do not pm. Once you have Free MCBOOT, you can load PS2 backups from the DVD Drive, USB stick, ext and internal HDD and your network. Since it is not an emulator like the PS3, peripheral like a steering wheel WILL work on a modded PS2. I have a fat PS2 and im using a spare IDE HDD to load my games. Once again, you can go the fully legal route and just add a PS2 system to your cabinet but, you will need to access it to change games and the PS2 is region locked so, Japaneses and European racing games will not play on a non-modded ps2.

The following are racing games I have tested that do NOT have steering wheel support (for my DFGT atleast, other wheels may be different)
Outrun 2 C2C - Does not see my wheel and does not have wheel settings in options menu like the Japanese version does(outrun2SP).
Battle Gear 2 - (Japanese Version) / Tokyo Road Race (European version)- Although the splash screen in Tokyo Road race mentions a steering wheel, it would not see my wheel at all.
Ridge Racer V - Does not see my wheel but after a deep google search, someone once mentioned using their madkatz wheel to play so maybe its my wheel.
Road Rage 3 - (european ver) / Touge 3 (japanese version) - a budget game that actually pretty fun. its like a budget mix of initial d and battle gear. Does not see my wheel
