MESS
« on: March 21, 2014, 10:35:44 am »
Anyone here use MESS these days? I haven't used it for years, so just curious how it is for the following 8 bit computer systems:

C64
Amstrad CPC
Atari 800
BBC B

I will give it a try at some point, but if anyone has tried any of these I would appreciate hearing how good the emulation is.

Are you looking for emulation of the whole computer of Atari 800 or just the games? If it's just the cartridge games, they should be interchangeable with Atari 5200.  I've used MESS for these and it worked flawlessly including analog controller support.

It emulates a wide range of C64 peripherals, and obscure stuff, but is kinda slow (only just scrapes 100% on my 3ghz machine) and compatibility with actual games seems rather poor considering how much emphasis has been put on 'accuracy'

CPC is pretty good, the majority of common games appear to be playable although some copy protected originals don't work so you have to use the cracked versions.

Atari 800 I think is OK

BBC emulation is very preliminary still, it improved a bit over the last year but I'd pass on it until the driver gets some serious attention from somebody who knows the system inside out.
