Playing vertical games on Virtual Pinball
« on: February 19, 2014, 12:39:54 pm »

I searched the site but didn't find any results.  I am going to build a Hyperpin Virtual Pinball machine in the near future and thought it would be really cool to have the option of playing vertical mame games on it.  With the large (46 inch) screen they would look great, viewing angle might be a bit awkward but manageable.  The part I can't get my head around is that you would have to incorporate joystick into the build.  It would be hard to be subtle about that....

Has anyone tried this before and am I completely out of my mind for thinking this might be a good idea!?   :dizzy:

There is/was a build on this site that did just that.  Can't recall the thread off hand though.

You can always just put an accessible USB port somewhere and have a controller sit on the lockdown bar.

Maximus (Griffindodd) was thinking about doing this with his Alchemy build.

Most people play MAME games on their backbox, but I can see merit in your question.

I can see that too, the backbox could be interesting as well.  No reason both couldn't be utilized.  It's probably wise not to go too far off course though, the primary focus really needs to be on making a quality virtual pin first and foremost.  It's not to have options.  The bar is set pretty high on some of these projects!!

Yeah, Id definitely advocate finishing up the Pinball side, then add bells and whistles of everything else.  If/When I ever make my Vpin, they'll be a 360 controller or something inside the coin door to play some vert schmups.

Put a USB connection on the front of the pinball and either just use a gamepad or make a small pedestal unit that can go just in front of the pinball. I think that the hardest bit will be the software setup so that horizontal games show on the back screen and vertical games on the playfield. You can probably just use 2 different Mame folders though, 1 for all the Horizontal games and one for the verticals.
