Sega Genesis Controller
« on: December 02, 2003, 12:14:17 pm »
I want to be able to connect an original Sega Genesis controller to my pc. (USB, parallel, whatever connection will work) Can anyone tell me whay my options might be. From what I can tell, I can not just connect it to my IPAC device.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

Don't know if I can/will tackle something like this.

Anyone else have anything. Maybe something pre-made that I could buy.

I've been working on a USB adapter for Genesis. I'm planning on selling a few that'll do SNES/NES/Genesis, but I've been out of town alot, so I haven't gotten everything together yet.

I modified two of the 6 button genesis pads to work with a keywiz.  If you can do a little soldering its not that tough.

I cut one end off a parallel cable and soldered the wires to each pad.  Then wired the other end into the keywiz.

There is a little chip on the board that needs to be removed.  I just used a dremel with a cutoff wheel.

$6.00 for the gamepads
I had the rest.

Retrozone now has a Genesis port to USB adapter
http://www.sealiecomputing.com/retrozone/

I recently got one from them but haven't had a chance to try it yet but I'm impressed with their nes and snes pads.

Glad to hear I was able to help

and after posting I went ahead and tried it out and it works perfectly - though you have to reset the controls in gens.  The genesis controller was always a favorite of mine - It was the one I always used with my Amiga also.

The snes and nes emulators support multiple inputs so it works fine w/ control panel or if I plug in the controller.  Perhaps there is a way to get gens working the same way but I haven't found it yet.

The atari adapter works as well and z26 apparently accepts key inputs also but the fire button on the FE version is remapped to button two.

Hey

Does anyone know if these Sega Genesis usb cables will work on a C64 joystick? Or do I have to buy an Atari cable as well?

Thanks

that is an interesting thought - the Atari one does list Commodore and Amiga and I always used the Genesis controller on my Amiga (they didn't have that listed when I ordered the first set)

I'll try that out when I get home :) (actually it would save me money because I was contemplating ordering another)

Ok I tried it - and you need both.  It kinda sorta works but the button mapping is different.

On the genesis controller plugged into the atari adapter up, down, left, right and buttons b and c worked - nothing else.

I am wondering -- since there are Nintendo and Sega to USB converters, does this mean I can get a USB to XBOX converter and use a Genesis controller with the XBOX?

Gotta love that!

I don't know if anyone noticed this before, but the genesis controller plug end exactly matches the plug of a standard 9-pin serial port.  So, the genesis controller can actually plug directly into the back of any pc without modification.  I was wondering if anyone knows of a driver for a regular genesis controller, or if it is even possible to make one to connect the controller directly.  If it is possible, perhaps one of you geniuses can work on creating one.  Thanks.

Uh, just cuz the plug is the same, doesn't mean that it can work. A serial port is RS232 communication, the genesis pad is straight up digital logic. No way, with out some protocol chip between the two, could you get it to work. Just cuz the key fits inside the lock, doesn't mean it will turn....

I think you're trying the reverse of what he asked... you're plugging the Genesis pad into the Atari convertor. So, not surprising only a couple of the buttons work as Atari sticks only had a couple (well usually 1).
From what you say works, my guess is the Atari stick in the Genesis convertor would work, but the button would act as either B or C.
Of course, to find out for sure you could email the guy. I asked him a couple questions & he got back to me pretty quick.

I emailed the RetroZone guy to ask if the Atari stick in the Genesis adapter would work.  Has anyone else given this a shot since it was last talked about?

Thanks!
