That fact is that Top 10 freemium games make millions of dollars every week. Say what you want about the business model, but there are a lot of people out there that are enjoying the games enough to pay a lot of money.  I can guarantee you that if Candy Crush were a .99 cent game, it wouldn't be making $750,000 a day.  Freemium games are drawing better and better developer talent because of the revenue potential, so love them or hate them, they aren't going anywhere.

Uh...ok. I'm not sure what to say to that. I didn't mean to disrespect anyone or this site.  I thought we were just having a nice discussion.

I don't know what you're talking about ed12. What does MAME have to do with the freemium business model of modern day smart phone/tablet apps? Why does what thewisteron said 'take balls?'

No disrespect taken on my end. Unfortunately you're correct - freemium games aren't going anywhere. It's a lot easier to get a ridiculous amount of money out of someone in bits and pieces than it is to ask them for $30 up front. Take Candy Crush - that game is designed to be practically impossible in the later levels without the special candy - and you have to pay to get more, because you've used up the freebies early on (and they don't guarantee you'll win.)

There are some good uses of the freemium model though. I have Pinball Arcade on my iPad and I can choose to buy only the tables I like instead of paying  for all of them (though I can choose to do so at a reduced cost if I wish.) Some tables are more expensive due to licensing (Twilight Zone), but that's the thing - I'm not paying for that premium unless I choose to do so.

I hate it.. but understand it.. I play World of Tanks, vowed to never put a dime in. But I enjoy the game so i pay for a premium account.. (basically doubles the speed of leveling and getting new tanks), it does not make you better then others, just faster at leveling.  SO its hard to be to critical of the model, as I use it in ONE game. Much like WoW, everybody hates gold farmers.. "nobody" buys gold.. yet its estimated over half the accounts are gold farmers.. somebody buying it. As pointed out here, these game are successful.. somebody is playing um.

As a big MMORPG player i have a pretty bad taste in my mouth for the idea.. most of the FREE 2Play are .. in simple terms. you can play without adding a penny. But most punish the player with amazingly long grinds, block them from some content, etc.. They do all they can to force you to pay.  Designing a game to punish you for not paying is a bad model. be it making level grind out forever, or locking levels.. NOt a fan.
